Diners consistently praise Bonaparte for classic French cuisine, an elegant candlelit setting, and attentive service, with refined presentations, flavorful dishes, and a strong wine list that enhances the meal. The Old Montreal location with cobblestone streets and a cozy fireplace adds romance and makes it ideal for intimate dinners or special occasions, while the tasting menu and the à la carte options let guests tailor the experience. The staff are friendly and professional, and the overall quality and consistency create a memorable dining experience.
We enjoyed our meal last evening. Family out of town gather here to have a good French cruise. We got the multi choice menu with wine paring. 4 of us loved our server. He was polite. Friendly. Warm. & great sense of humor. & the smile.....(Matthew I believe was his name)
My only complaint is I find my mushroom ravioli was over cooked. Water down. But overall presentation on every plate was beautiful. Food delish. I would recommend this gem of a place to tourists.
Matthew: I hope u do try my tip. Blue cheese with a dab of honey
The host that greeted us was great.
The waiter was good starting out & then completely ignored us. He fawned over other tables - I tried to call him over twice … acknowledged me but took care of others.
My partner ordered a drink mid meal & never got it.
I asked a question about an after dinner drink & got a rude response. We requested our check & had dessert & an after dinner drink elsewhere.
As for the Haddock special it was bland & the Haddock was dry. Salt & pepper would have helped but I was almost finished by time the waiter came back.
We normally tip 20-25% but not this time.
Disappointing to say the least.
The macaron withe sparkler was a nice touch but a little too late.
Lovely restaurant with classic dishes prepared perfectly. Located just steps away from the theatre & Notre Dame Cathedral, Restaurant Bonaparte is the perfect dinner venue before your shows.
We had a quick dinner before AURA, a lovely projection mapping spectacle at the cathedral & were so glad we picked Restaurant Bonaparte. Service was incredibly quick & attentive. We're looking forward to returning the next time we're in Montreal.
My wife loved her multi-course meal-she thought both the food & wine pairings were wonderful. I, however, didn't enjoy it as much. While the cuisine is clearly traditional French, I found the staff unhelpful when I asked for guidance on the menu, & the portions felt small for the price. The food was good but nothing stood out to me-except for the chocolate chip soufflé, which was truly excellent. Perhaps this is simply a matter of taste, but for me, it wasn't worth the cost.
This was a treat. Our first night in Montreal. Every dish was at a level I had never had before. If you want to have a special memory rather than just a place to eat, you will go to Bonaparte.

We had the Tasting Menu which cost $124 per person. The appetizers were average. For main, I ordered the beef filet. It was a big disappointment because the beef lacks flavour & texture. It was not a good cut of meat. My husband ordered the lobster. The dish came with 2 only small pieces of lobsters. The portions size was not consistent with my price we paid. We both felt dissatisfied!
We had the tasting menu & some plates off the a la carte menu. While I appreciate the level of service, the food unfortunately was not up to expectations. The dishes were well thought of but poorly executed in terms of flavour & on occasion on presentation m. Some plates looked too simple & carelessly designed not fit for a fine-dining establishment. I believe they could work on enhancing flavoring of all the dishes.
My wife & I had the lobster bisque which was excellent. But the main courses weren't quite the same level as the bisque. My wife had the Chicken Breast Served with Melted Brie & Sage Cream, which the chicken was on the dry side but the sause was very good. I had the Lamb Shank, Sweet Garlic Sauce, the shank was cooked perfectly but there was very little sauce for the amount of meat. If it wasn't for the dry chicken & less sauce, I would have given 5-star. One more thing, the basket of baguette wasn't the best I have eaten, it was on the dry side & the crust was chewy, it felt like a day's old bread.
I'm sad & disappointed at this restaurant today. I've been coming here since 2017 for either jazz club or jazz festival or for dinner & I hope we sit at the bar & tonight I was ignored. I took 30 minutes to get your soup & the bartender was just not attending to me & the other party that was next to me & I'm a picture that was only three of us at the bar. I know he was busy, but I was there for soup & an entrée & it took forever to get my food & my wine was never refilled. I'm sitting there to enjoy my evening & nobody was serving me so I'm sad that I may not come out there again.
We were expecting far better food based on reviews & a recommendation from the hotel concierge. Both our appetizers & entrees were rather bland. The soufflé was very good. We waited quite a while for our entrees. Our very pleasant waiter actually apologized before we said anything. The restaurant was rather noisy. Not worth the price.
The food was delicious & the service was impeccable. However, the ladies bathroom, every single chandelier & light in that bathroom was filthy & does not look like I've been cleaned any very long time.
