About

Biiru operates as a distinctive Japanese bistro focusing on an approachable fusion of traditional techniques and modern casual culinary styles. The menu highlights shareable plates including crispy gyoza, karaage, and seasoned skewers that pair directly with a selection of Japanese beers and sake. A compact interior creates an intimate atmosphere defined by minimalist wood accents and wall-mounted art that mirrors contemporary urban Japanese aesthetics. Diners find a consistent emphasis on bold umami flavors rather than complex experimental preparation methods. Small table arrangements facilitate social interactions while maintaining an efficient pace throughout the service duration. This establishment maintains a functional layout that prioritizes high turnover and accessibility for patrons seeking recognizable regional staples. The culinary focus remains steadfast on providing reliable textures and authentic ingredient profiles within an uncomplicated, fast-paced environment suited for casual groups.

Review Summary

Biiru is widely celebrated as a standout Japanese izakaya in downtown Montreal, consistently earning praise for its flavorful, fusion-style tapas and welcoming atmosphere. Guests frequently highlight the tasting menu as an excellent way to experience a variety of dishes, with particular favorites including the salmon bonbons, pork ribs, karaage, and gyoza. The restaurant is noted for its cozy decor, including a popular heated, covered terrace that provides a comfortable dining environment year-round. While the vibrant, lively vibe makes it a great spot for groups and date nights, some visitors mention that the noise level can rise during busy periods. Service is generally described as attentive, friendly, and professional, contributing to a memorable dining experience, though occasional inconsistencies regarding wait times or portion sizes are noted by a small number of guests. Overall, the combination of high-quality Japanese-inspired small plates, creative cocktails, and a warm, inviting setting makes it a highly recommended destination.

I've never not had an amazing time each time I visit Biiru. The food & drinks are great but the staff are the MVPs. Thank you to Amy, Will, & Alex!

Lucky to snag a 3-top on a Saturday night without a reservation. Will recommended the set menu for $45pp, & it was a hit! Great selection & generous portions. The Onsen was delightful as cocktail or mocktail, adding brightness to balance the strong entree flavors. Matcha cake also rich & full of flavor, worth a try.

I went to Biiru during my trip to Montreal because my friend suggested the place. She's been there a couple of times before & liked the food so she wanted me to try it to while we're in town. It was a Thursday night & we tried to get a last minute reservation online but there's no table available for 7:30 pm on the system. But we did get lucky with walk-in though because they actually have a table available for us at the outdoor area.

We decided to order a bunch of dishes to share between the two of us & here are some of my favorites from our meal:

🍵 Matcha Matcha • 8/10
I ordered the Matcha Matcha mocktail. Nice matcha, not too strong, not too bitter, not too sweet. It has a nice earthy taste.

🍽? Korn Korokke • 7.5/10
The croquettes were nicely fried & the curry wasn't too strong.

🥟 Pork Gyoza • 8/10
Great pork gyoza. The gyoza skin wasn't too thick & the pork was flavorful.

🍽? Kaisen Don • 8/10
The Kaisen Don was pretty good. It tasted fresh & & light.

All & all, although I liked some of the dishes better than the others, the food overall was pretty good for a modern Japanese fusion izakaya spot. Service was great & the staff who waited our table was nice. The noise level at this place was pretty high since it is a drinking place.

If you're looking for a good Japanese fusion izakaya spot with great drinks menu & lively atmosphere in Montreal, this place is worth to try.
