About

Biiru operates as a distinctive Japanese bistro focusing on an approachable fusion of traditional techniques and modern casual culinary styles. The menu highlights shareable plates including crispy gyoza, karaage, and seasoned skewers that pair directly with a selection of Japanese beers and sake. A compact interior creates an intimate atmosphere defined by minimalist wood accents and wall-mounted art that mirrors contemporary urban Japanese aesthetics. Diners find a consistent emphasis on bold umami flavors rather than complex experimental preparation methods. Small table arrangements facilitate social interactions while maintaining an efficient pace throughout the service duration. This establishment maintains a functional layout that prioritizes high turnover and accessibility for patrons seeking recognizable regional staples. The culinary focus remains steadfast on providing reliable textures and authentic ingredient profiles within an uncomplicated, fast-paced environment suited for casual groups.

Review Summary

Biiru is widely celebrated as a standout destination in downtown Montreal, offering a vibrant and welcoming izakaya experience that captures the essence of Japanese fusion cuisine. Many guests praise the diverse menu, particularly highlighting the tasting menus, candied salmon, ribs, and okonomiyaki as consistently delicious highlights. The atmosphere is frequently described as charming, cozy, and energetic, with a beautifully decorated terrace that adds to the overall appeal. While some visitors find the space bustling or note that portion sizes can be smaller, the vast majority commend the attentive, professional, and friendly service provided by the staff. Whether visiting for a casual date, a celebratory dinner, or a quick bite before a show, diners often express a strong desire to return for the quality of food, the upbeat vibe, and the memorable hospitality.

My first experience here was a memorable one, I had never tried Japanese cuisine outside of sushi. This menu was well put together, they have options for all, including great vegan options. The Saki was chilled, the server was well versed & knew exactly what to recommend to satisfy all our tastes. We finished our meal with a delicious dark chocolate warm brownie topped with vanilla ice cream. A perfect touch to a wonderful dinner. I can't wait to go back.
Our waitress is also a nurse & though I forget her name I wanted to give her full credit & ample gratitude for taking such great care of us. Good luck with everything.

Bel endroit, bon service, bonne ambiance, bonne bouffe, bref je recommande 😊
La seule chose que j'améliorerai est de mettre un peu moins fort la musique quand il y a déjà beaucoup de monde.

Our waitress Julia & the rest of the staff were polite & professional. We had the tasting menu & all left satisfied with the quantities; not to mention all plates served were of quality. Would highly recommend this place.

Me & my boyfriend went here last year for our first date, we decided to come back this year for our anniversary & had a wonderful server named Will. Funny enough, it was the same server we had last year. He was very kind to us, & even gave us a dessert on the house for our anniversary. It really touched me, & made the day that much more special for us. I really recommend this place to anyone who likes a chill atmosphere & delicious food.

The atmosphere is decent but the food & service were a letdown.

There were many tables crammed in the space so we were always bumping into our neighbours.

My biggest criticism is thatwe found most of the food to be extremely over priced for the portion size. A small kaisen don is $20, & you would need two to be full. I will say the salmon bonbons are a standout & worth the price.

In addition the service was disappointing. Our waiter had to be reminded 2-3 times to bring us water. The drinks also arrived after our meal was nearly over, which was strange.

Overall I would not recommend this restaurant.

The food at Biiru is amazing! It's sometimes hard to find a fun, energetic, delicious place right in downtown montreal, but this place delivers. We were a group of 6 & shared maybe 12-14 plates & each was was delicious. The ribs, candied salmon, salmon tartare/poke, & cold ramen were probably our too ones, but honestly, we did not have one plate we didn't like. We did have to remind our waiter to being our sake after receiving half our plates but no sake, but they were very apologetic. Otherwise, service was great, really nice people & nice vibe. Would recommend & come back!

This is one of my go to spots in MTL- it never disappoints! The food is always consistently great, the staff is really attentive & friendly even on their busiest nights, & the ambiance is so cozy & fun. I would recommend any of their yuzu infused drinks, as well as the fried tofu, candied salmon, & the okonomiyaki!
I also recommend booking their heated terrace, but the inside dining is also charming

I loved the food! One of my favorite things about this place is that you can order small portions of different dishes, which makes it easy to try a variety of flavors instead of committing to just one meal. They also offer full-sized portions if you prefer a larger serving of a single dish.
The terrace is super cute & creates a lovely atmosphere to enjoy your meal. If you enjoy Japanese food & want to sample a variety of dishes, I highly recommend this place!
