Appreciated that they were open before 8am on a Sunday - I was the first one in & had quick & efficient service. Food & prices were decent. I ordered a classic breakfast. Coffee kept flowing without me needing to ask for it which i appreciated. I did ask for my potatoes to be crispy & they weren't, but they were still ok. Did enjoy the music selection as well - perfect chill Sunday morning vibes.
Timeless ambiance. The décor is one-of-a-kind, & the music harks back to an older era & a Montreal of years gone by (think Leonard Cohen, John Little paintings, Roch Carrier, etc.). The staff is amazingly friendly. The two salsas are homemade & uniquely flavorful. The meals are scrumptious (go for the Gershwin!!). The orange juice is made on the spot, & the coffee is uniquely delicious!
It's a shame, I used to really like this place. The service was really quite poor despite the friendliness of the staff. For example, my coffee was cold when I got it (after waiting a while even though it wasn't busy) & my water only got refilled at the end of the meal after I paid my bill. I was asked if I wanted fake or real maple syrup but didn't know the real stuff cost an extra $4 until I saw the bill - we're in Quebec so that's fairly egregious. Customers should be warned they'll be charged extra for something like that. The potatoes are always a slam dunk but the pancakes tasted like they were made from Bisquick mix; they were awful.
Bagel Etc. in Montreal is a charming breakfast spot that blends great food with rich local lore. From the moment you walk in, the friendly staff make you feel like a regular-even if it's your first visit. Service is impressively quick; you'll barely have time to sip your coffee before your breakfast arrives, hot & satisfying.
The menu is full of comforting classics, but what truly sets Bagel Etc. apart is its atmosphere. The head chef is known for sharing stories with diners, weaving tales of Montreal's cultural past with a warmth that makes the experience feel personal. One of the most beloved stories is about Leonard Cohen, who was a frequent visitor. His presence still lingers in the air, especially when you spot the signed Photos he once brought in, now proudly displayed on the walls-a quiet tribute to a legendary artist & a loyal patron.
Bring in your own signed CD Andhave it added to the wall.
Whether you're there for a quick bite or a leisurely morning, Bagel Etc. offers more than just breakfast-it offers a slice of Montreal's soul. Between the food, the stories, & the welcoming vibe, it's easy to see why locals & tourists alike keep coming back.
Bagel Etc.-a great place to sit.
Bagel Etc is a CLASSIC plateau establishment. Their potatoes are *unreal*. I visited for the first time in a few yrs (been living away from MTL) & it was even nicer than I remembered. Turns out it was bought by one of the line cooks & a waitress! The vibes were good, now they've retained vibe & are augmenting!! Their benedicts are all served on bagels. The French toast is made with challah. Unlimited drip coffee. Weekends are busy which makes things difficult for the waitstaff at times, be patient!! it's worth the wait. Takes cash or debit. Former haunt of famed son of MTL Leonard Cohen. Congratulations again on the purchase of the business, so happy we'll have Bagel Etc for generations to come!!
A True Montreal Gem Frozen in Time
This place is a beautifully preserved time capsule, radiating the nostalgic charm & authenticity of a classic 1940s bar & restaurant. The moment you walk in, you're greeted by the sounds, scents, & atmosphere of another era - like stepping through a time portal right in the heart of the ever-evolving Plateau.
It's so vivid, you can almost imagine the faint trace of smoky cigars lingering from a bygone time, before smoking was banned indoors - a sensory whisper of the past that deepens the nostalgic feel.
The owners & staff deserve full credit for their warm hospitality & welcoming energy. While the entire menu is solid - everything is well-prepared & satisfying - it's the vibe that truly makes this spot unforgettable. You're not just coming for a meal; you're here for a nostalgic experience.
By pure luck, I stumbled across this gem on one of my early morning walks while searching for a good coffee spot. I'm so glad I did. They open at 7:30 AM daily - perfect for fellow early risers looking for more than just a caffeine fix. 🫶🏻🌞
Thank you for your hospitality & the experience you shared through'Bagel etc.' (1940's restaurant) ✨
Food was good, service was below average, but the coffee...it was so weak we thought we had been served tea. Once we were finally able to get the attention of the elusive waitress, she served us another coffee...only slightly less weak.
Unreal food with incredible staff who are very attentive, make sure people are beyond comfortable, & the atmosphere is beautiful. Great food. Great coffee & other drinks. Great music. Will definitely be recommending & coming back.
Excellent food, service, & ambiance. I have to add that they serve the best coffee in Montreal. Most coffee here is too bitter for me. I'm an Italian & I feel like I know my coffee.
We stopped by here just to get a coffee. Very nice people. This is where Leonard Cohen used to hang out, & that red stool is where he used to sit. When they renovated the place, they kept the stool.
THE BEST BREAKFAST IN MONTREAL. I mean that. Been coming to bagel for more than 5 years - it consistently delivers amazing food, coffee & service. Authentic staff, beautiful ambience & genuine vibes. A must if you're in the city & wake up craving a delicious, hearty meal 💯
Nice atmosphere in a cool looking spot. Coffee was not very good. Food was decent but nothing special.
Visited Bagel Etc on Saint Laurent Street on a Saturday. The crowded ambiance & constant noise detracted from the experience. Despite a diverse menu, the food was ordinary, lacking any standout flavors. The coffee, unfortunately, didn't leave a lasting impression. Overall, an average brunch spot with room for improvement.
Went in to have a light meal & coffee but the prices were insane. A plain bagel is $3-4 but if you want to add cream cheese it's an extra $3 for that? We were sat in this cute window seat which was fine but the neon sign that's directly beside you, is soo loud & distracting. The coffee was nothing special, & I was extremely disappointed that a cafe didn't have any Wi-Fi?
Really enjoyed our brunch here. I liked my chicken eggs Benedict & mocha coffee a lot. The atmosphere was very unique & the service was great. Highly recommended.
Coffee taste like water. Food was ok. Service was quick but then again potatoes were still cold & onions half cooked. Would not return.

The best brunch for a post-celebratory evening. Simon, our short-order cook, starts our brekkie as soon as he sees us walk in the door. We go for the hardcore breakfast: two overeasy eggs, bacon, Knackwürst sausage, dijon, authentic Montreal bagel, crwam cheese, hash browns & coffee "à volonté" with fresh squeezed OJ. with taxes & tip, a couplw eats for about $25. Satiated!!!
