About

Au Petit Extra embodies the quintessential spirit of a classic French bistro through a focused menu centered on traditional culinary techniques. Diners encounter a steady rotation of heartier plates that emphasize the preparation of raw protein, most notably represented by signature hand-cut tartares seasoned with precision. The interior environment prioritizes a functional, open layout that encourages direct engagement with the brisk pace of kitchen operations. Culinary execution favors bold, straightforward flavors over complex deconstruction, ensuring that every plate remains consistent with historical bistro standards. The menu relies on the procurement of quality seasonal ingredients to maintain the integrity of its core offerings. This establishment functions as a dedicated hub for those seeking technical proficiency in the preparation of established French classics served within an unpretentious and highly efficient operational setting.

Review Summary

Au Petit Extra is widely recognized as a classic destination for authentic French cuisine in a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. Many patrons praise the restaurant for its consistently delicious dishes, such as the duck confit, beef tartare, and crème brûlée, as well as an impressive and well-curated wine list. While the majority of visitors experience professional and friendly service, some reviews point to inconsistencies, particularly regarding longer wait times during peak hours or moments when service felt unpolished. The restaurant remains a popular choice for pre-show dining, though guests occasionally advise allowing extra time to ensure a relaxed experience. Although the vast majority of feedback is positive and highlights the restaurant as a long-standing favorite, some diners have noted occasional issues with food preparation, portion sizes, or noise levels when the venue is full.

This French restaurant offers a pleasant atmosphere & food that is generally above average. The dining room is comfortable, making it a nice place for a relaxed meal.
For appetizers, we ordered the roast poultry rillettes. For mains, we had the beef cheek & duck confit, & we finished with a crème brûlée for dessert.
Overall, the dishes were well prepared & enjoyable. The beef cheek was tender, the duck confit was nicely cooked, & the crème brûlée was a satisfying way to end the meal. While nothing was particularly groundbreaking, the food was consistently good & the overall experience was very enjoyable.
A solid choice if you're looking for a comfortable French dining experience.

We spent a fantastic night with family in this lovely restaurant. Food is delicious & presented beautifully. I ordered the duck confit which was tender & flavourful. Service is attentive. We will definitely come back & try other menus.

Found this on a whim while we were on our way to Quebec City. We got the duck confit, lamb shank, & crème brûlée for dessert. Service was impeccable with the host making sure that we were taken care of. I am rating the duck confit about 4.5/5 as it was a bit drier than expected but the flavour was on point. Would highly recommend this spot to anyone & would definitely visit again. Merci bcp!

Good was disappointing. Duck magret portion was tiny & taste was bland, ribeye steak had overwhelming charcoal taste.

I have been there many times over the years & only for duck recipe would be much tastier if there is an orange sauce type flavor which I have had once elsewhere would make it even better.

We arrived & were seated promptly.
The ambiance was lovely with white tablecloths our server was nice. The food, the oysters were delicious, the duck confit & the duck magret were outstanding. The cod was beautifully prepared. We had the crème brûlée, the tart Tatin & the Paris Brest. All accompanied with a fantastic bottle of Bordeaux.
Will be back next time I return to Montreal.

The duck confit was a little dry but overall the food was good. My companions enjoyed their meals. Tea is much easier to make than coffee. What is essential is boiling water & loose or bagged tea leaves. My tea was was made with water that was not hot enough so the tea did not infuse. Please encourage your staff to make good tea! Ce n'est pas sorcier!
