Went with a group of 10 on Saturday evening. Don't waste your money here. This place is not what it was 15 years ago. First time in my life I've not eaten more than two bites of a piece of meat given to me. Steak en croute was not edible, overcooked and far from tender, with a very strange texture. Left the entire lump of meat there except for the two pieces, and not once asked if everything was ok (due to the fact that there's a second service, everything is rushed). Rice undercooked as well. Salad was passable, but barely. Everything is so timed that three other groups had their birthdays sang right at same time/one after another, candles burned out before could blow them out. And they offer to take a group picture but don't take the time to tell you that two people aren't in the frame.
There are sooooo many places in Montreal where you can get a better meal with better service.
Having heard many positives about Gibby's I finally had a chance to visit. Very rustic and charming inside. The female attire should be updated though. I'm sure they would be much happier.
I ordered the Gibby's cut ribeye with a side of lobster tail. My friend ordered the same but with the scampi side. She shared with her daughter.
Dinner started with free pickles and a great loaf of bread followed by a very a tasty salad. Other option were a also available (see web menu). After our salad, a small portion of sorbet was served to cleanse the pallet. A nice touch.
The steaks were served and they were done exactly as order. My friend loved her steak while I and her daughter found the steak just average. It tasted a little bland. It was not a melt in you mouth rich steak that I'm accustomed to from a well marbled rib eye.
While I'm glad to have the Gibby's experience (great service), Gibby's will not be the my first choice when I get a craving for a good ribeye.
Completing my touring of Montreal finest steakhouses. This time, dinner at Gibby's, an institution that I have not visited since 2009. In 2009, when I first visited Gibby's, I had not much experience with steakhouses and I was very impressed at that time. Years later, I have tried many steakhouses not only in Canada, but also in the US and in other countries where beef is as revered as in the US. The reason I am writing this is because I do not think that Gibby's is bad. They are doing things the same way they used to, but I believe that I am not impressed by it anymore only because my taste has evolved. So Yes, my rib eye was cooked to requested doneness, but no it's no more one that seduces me because nowadays my ideal rib eye steak is the like of a corn-finished 40 days dry aged Black Angus, A 40 days wet aged USDA prime, bone-in, etc.. which are clearly not what was offered on this dinner (this boneless rib eye steak was firmer, had less fat distribution, less expressive meat flavor ...but again, compared ..to what i idealize as great today ). So less impressed, indeed, but only because my taste has switched to something else, NOT because it is bad! And yes, if you start comparing to some other hot steakhouses, well no it is not playing in the same league as it is not its purpose neither. Still, it's a generous steakhouse: nice warm bread, palate cleanser, pickles of great quality, plenty of salad did accompany my rib eye. The only thing that i can't put on the back of the evolution of my palate is this : the wine service...leaving a glass of Pinot noir on my table without showing the bottle to me, without pre-tasting NO and NO! You serve me my glass of Pinot Noir while I haven't finished my other glass of sparkling wine, again..NO! And what about the year of that PN? Its description (region, etc) ??? There's no excuse for that.
The ambiance is old and dark and the waitresses are still wearing the old maid outfits... The portions are huge and not alot of flavor. I havent been in years and i just think it needs a make over and it could be something like it used to be.
Not many options for kids either as the portions are large.
This restaurant is a must at least once in your life. Although it is a little pricey the portions are big. I ordered the Gibby's rib cut $47.00 and the Monity Carlo potatoe. Delicious. Comes with asperagus and a huge salad. I had no room for desert but the Irish Coffee is a good way to end the evening. A nice show too when the waiter made it. Although that cost 17.00 it was excellent. Our waiter Andre was number 1 and my mom had fun kidding with him. I have been to Gibby's a couple of times on occasions and everytime is a great experience. Valet parking too which is a plus.
I love Gibby's! The food is great and I love the little details like the warm, buttery bread that they are quick to replenish, and the lemon sorbet between meals to cleanse your palate. I always have the rib steak and it is cooked PERFECTLY. And the ambiance is warm and welcoming, it feels like eating in someone's home. As a side note, I took my parents here for their 30th anniversary and despite not having called ahead to ask the staff to do something special, I only mentionned it to our waitress to see if she could do anything and they came by after our meal with a cake, took our photo and gave us a framed photo! Very sweet of them.
A recommender.
Restaurant absolument génial, ambiance nourriture et service magnifiques nous avons réellement apprécier notre souper. À recommander!
Excellent!
Excellentt restaurant ! Je le recommande !!
This place is classy and Delicious. Great experience! Great food! Great service!
Even thought I'm a native Montrealer, I was still a newbie when it came to experiencing Gibby's cuisine.
Reservations are a must, and even then expect a 10-20 minute wait, depending on the day of the week.
The ambience: rustic, with old world charm; (silver plates?) wait staff in uniforms reminiscent of Mother Tucker's (and so very polite, paitent and helpful) and food hearty. But so was the price...
Expect to pay $50 to start for a steak, $17 for a Spanish Coffee, but I must say, the portions sizes did not dissapoint.
Menu is basic meat and potatoes fare. Lots of steak and seafood, but the few chicken dishes were interesting. I'm thinking a 1/2 French and 1/2 surf and turf fusion. I had the fillet mignon with Monte Carlo potatoes (stuffed with all the fixins mashed
baked potatoes) and surprisingly crisp asparagus tips, the meat was tender, but lacked a deep seasoned taste (the kind the Keg uses), so I took some of the butter from my husband's chicken Kiev, drizzles that on top and it tasted delicious.
The chicken Kiev will be on my radar for my next visit as it comes in two pieces, each the size of a small to medium boneless chicken breast. Perfectly cooked on the outside, and delightfully seasoned on the inside, it was perfect for a hearty meal. The unusually large salad entree (ceasar salad - fantastic) and all u can eat fresh bread were also very fresh and tasty.
Desert was a perfect way to end the dining experience - my creme brûlée was delicately cooked and warm throughout, and even through the special coffee was close to 20&, it had enough alcohol for two drinks!
A once a year/special occasion dining experience I enjoyed quite a bit. Highly recommended.
great steakhouse everything was amazing
Gibby's reste encore notre restaurant préféré!
We heard that this was a good place to try but we didn't know what we needed a reservation. The hostess was kind enough to find us a table but warned us that it's reserve at 7pm. We had no problem with that but she didn't tell our waitress that we we're in a rush because of our time constraint. All in all, the waitress was still nice and checked the reservation time and told us we still have time for dessert. Now the food was amazing especially the fish! I had a steak and it was so so. I wish I had tried the fish.
