I hadn't been to Villa Massimo in several years, although I used to dine there quite often. Returning was meant to be a special treat for my family.

For a very long time, Villa Massimo was considered a legend of Italian cuisine. I remember going there & being impressed by exceptional food & classic dishes prepared to perfection.

A week ago, we happened to be in the neighbourhood, & I decided to treat my family to what I expected would be an outstanding meal.

Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly by a very exuberant & rather loud waiter. He wasn't unpleasant, just exceptionally loud. To my astonishment, there was only one other couple in the restaurant.

Walking inside felt like stepping into a page of history. Nothing had changed. It was as if time had stood still, as though we had arrived in a DeLorean & travelled back several decades.

We each ordered a drink. Mine was a Bloody Caesar, & unfortunately it was terrible. It tasted as though the Clamato juice had been sitting around for a year, & I am not exaggerating. I rarely complain & chose not to say anything because I didn't want to dampen the mood for my family.

The appetizers arrived in due time. I ordered the pasta soup, which was good, certainly not bad, but not extraordinary either. I suppose I was expecting something more homemade, the kind of soup that reminds you of Nonna's cooking.

The other appetizers were the mussels. I could tell something was wrong because my family members were eating them unusually slowly, & one person didn't finish the dish. When I asked why, I was told they didn't taste fresh. I tried one myself & unfortunately agreed. I don't believe they were spoiled, but they had a strong smell & the broth was unpleasant. Perhaps it was the wine or seasoning used in the preparation. At least no one became ill afterward.

My main course was equally disappointing. My fish meunière was supposed to be a fillet, but what arrived were chunks of fish swimming in an excessively lemony wine sauce. Another dish, shrimp in a Pernod sauce, was good, again, simply good, nothing memorable or enticing enough to make us want to return. The last one was duck risotto, it was actually quite enjoyable & was probably the best dish of the evening.

Desserts, unfortunately, were also disappointing.

It is genuinely sad to see such an emblematic restaurant lose its appeal. A once highly respected establishment, known for both its quality of food & service, now seems to have become a shadow of its former self. Considering the high prices, the experience simply did not justify the cost.

Sadly, this is a place we will never revisit. It was a trip back in time that should perhaps have remained a memory. I fear Villa Massimo may struggle to survive for much longer if things do not improve.

Another page of history appears to be turning.

I don't usually write reviews like this, but I honestly don't understand how this restaurant is still in business. Everything about it feels like it's stuck in another century, & not in a nostalgic way. The waiter has an outdated attitude, & the service matches the overall feeling of the place. The food was simply awful. Stay away from the mussels & the fish, &, if it's possible, even the spaghetti wasn't cooked properly. The restaurant itself looked like it hadn't been thoroughly cleaned in years, & the furniture has clearly seen much better days. To make matters worse, the prices are shockingly high.'Shockingly high', it needs to be repeated. It's extremely overpriced for the quality of the food, the service, & the overall experience. Unfortunately, this was one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences I've had, & I wouldn't recommend it. If someone invites you to dinner there, run. &, don't look back.

A dinosaur from the 70's

We dined here on the 12th of Feb around 6:30 pm. The restaurant was virtually empty so we had our choice of table. On first entry, the restaurant feels warm & inviting, it is only after being seated & looking around that you notice that every square inch of space is filled with plants, wine bottles, instruments, pictures  & Italian bric-à-brac. The feel is  overwhelming. We were relieved to discover that the staff member talking very loudly to other diners when we entered, was not going to be our waiter. It turned out that he was the cook.

We ordered a beautiful bottle of red wine at $105 to enjoy whilst reading the menu. With 24 pages full of menu items, there was a lot of reading to do. This menu is a relic from the past, with food titles in a fancy typeface that were hard to understand, followed by descriptions in  even smaller letters. The menu was a real challenge to get through. I gave up immediately, hoping my partner would choose for us both.

Our waiter came over a few times to take our order but we asked for some time to enjoy the wine whilst we read the menu. Then, out of nowhere, the cook appeared & started shouting at us.  It took us by surprise, but soon realised that the cook was not happy that we were taking so long to order. He even threw in an F bomb, saying that he didn't want to be stuck there til midnight. It was only 7 pm.

Eventually we ordered a Carbonara, the original Italian way, without cream, & a Veal Scallopini, to share.

When the Carbonara arrived it looked like a birds nest in a bowl;  the Veal Scallopini looked good.

The Carbonara tasted as bad as it looked. The noodles were undercooked & kind of crunchy, it was dry & did not taste like a Carbonara. The only good news is that the Veal Scallopini was tasty.

The cook had kind of ruined the night for us with his ridiculous behaviour so we cut our losses soon after finishing & left, knowing that we would never return. Whilst this restaurant opened in'99, it feels like a dinosaur from the'70s.
