Food was delicious & the staff were very friendly. Once the band started, we just chilled & vibed with the atmosphere
Really disappointing experience overall. The main act cancelled last minute & was replaced by another band, which already set a different tone for the evening. We arrived on time but our table wasn't ready, so we had to wait about 10-15 minutes.
When we were finally seated, it was all the way in the back near the kitchen/bathroom area where we could barely see the band. While trying to have a normal conversation at our table with instrumental jazz playing, the staff repeatedly told us we were too loud, even though nearby tables were much louder & weren't being addressed.
On top of that, the drinks were disappointing (the martini tasted mostly like olive juice, & the Encore cocktail wasn't good either). Overall, the experience didn't match the expectations for a jazz bar night out.
I've never been so disrespected by any staff anywhere.
First, the live band was changed last minute.
Second, the waitresses came to our table & SHUSHED us twice in less than 5 minutes, even though I promise we were not the loudest table. We were also all the way in the back, so there was no way the band was hearing us.
When we complained that we had been shushed twice even though we reduced our volume, the waitress said'If we told you twice it means we're right'. Super super super rude.
I'm a musician, we've never shushed an audience & forced our music on them.
Plus, I ordered a dirty martini that was basically olive juice, absolutely disgusting.
We left after 20 minutes of arriving due to the abnormally mean service. If you want people not to talk, say that at the beginning of the performance, second, be kind while asking for it.
Absolutely never returning.
I had an amazing time at Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill. I sat at the bar for the show. My bartender was very attentive & kind. It was the night before Valentines Day & I was solo but I didn't feel awkward or lonely. The band was fantastic & the venue was cozy & romantic
Incredible evening with friends at the early dinner show of Diavinci Code!
The band was very entertaining & talented!
We try to go to Upstairs 2-3 times a year as it it our favourite evening in Montreal.
The food is always good( could be a little warmer upon arrival to the table), the service is spot on with a smile & the ambiance is electric.
A special mention to the hardworking & friendly manager Marianne. Someone took my husband's coat by mistake ( with our house keys in it) & she diligently called all the people on the reservations list & found his coat!! Talk about going above & beyond!
Thank you for a great night against n!
Nous avons eu, encore une fois, une superbe soirée de jazz - au rythme de succès des Beetles. Un band de trois avec pianiste très sensible & envoûtant de par sLe service courtois & discret. Belle soirée comme toujours au Upstairs
Music was fantastic, & the club is an intimate & warm place to be. Very fun & quality bands.
New Year's eve party. Beautifully decorated, the chef out did himself, as always wonderful service. Great choice of band. I can't wait to go back!!!!
It was a great evening: My first real intro to Jazz. Dai Vinci's Code (Cuban band) was phenomenal. My only issue was the back table where we were sitting as it was very uncomfortable to sit sideways on a banquette to watch the show behind us. They did warn us on the reservation. The little TV monitors helped a bit to see the entire band as it was difficult to see from our angle. But overall a great evening. Make sure you reserve as it books quickly. The 615pm show is both dinner & show (each charged separately) & music starts at 7 (to 830) while the 9pm show is only the band (if I understood the website correctly).
Great venue, the ambiance is groovy & intimate! The band was GREAT (Remi-jean LEBLANC Quartet PLAYS STEVIE WONDER), unfortunately the vocals were waayyyy too loud (according to my brother's nerdy smartwatch, drums maxed at 85 dB while vocals peaked at over 112dB when she sang her stronger/higher notes, as even when belting, she never held the mic away from her lips). People tensed & winced & some literally covered their ears. We mentioned it to a waiter - in vain. Still, beautiful voice & clever jazz adaptations of Steve Wonder's hits!
Service was great, but the food was generally ordinary. (I don't recommend the ceviche, tacos or burgers) The egg noodles with sun-dried tomatoes & creamy sauce was amazing - & the cheese cake too!
Andy Rubal & his band were awesome.
We've seen than before.
We're regulars there !!!!!!
People great place , service atmosphere & shows.
Great place to enjoy an evening with live bands! The crowd was on fire!
My wife & I have been going to the Upstairs Jazz Bar & have enjoyed the food, ambience & great jazz for many years. The intimate atmosphere of this iconic jazz club is perfectly suited for both traditional & modern jazz bands to play in. Excellent food & a great bar along with great service contribute to very pleasant & enriching dinner & jazz evenings!
Joel Giberovitch is an outstanding owner & host who has been serving the Montreal jazz community for over 30 years! Upstairs is deservedly a regular venue in the Montreal Jazz Festival.
My only issue was, prior to the show starting, it was mentioned to avoid conversation to respect fellow customers in order to enjoy the show. My issue was between each set when we were able to have conversation amongst friends, the music was much louder than what the actual band was playing. Was difficult having any conversation.
I had so much fun & the Cuban Jazz band was absolutely amazing. Good job 👏 & merci beaucoup for the lovely evening :)
