Tong Por is definitely one of Montreal's staple Chinese restaurants, especially for dim sum.
The dim sum here is consistently very good & a reliable choice if you're craving classic Cantonese dishes.
For dinner, they also offer some lesser-known, specialty dishes that are absolutely worth trying. One standout is the Eight Treasure Duck (???), which is not something you'll find at many places. It's a great option if you're looking to try something different & more traditional.
Just note that this dish needs to be ordered in advance-usually at least 2 to 4 hours ahead-so the kitchen has time to prepare it properly.
Overall, a very solid spot with both classic & unique offerings. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you're willing to plan ahead for their special dishes.
Tong Por is such a great spot when you're craving comforting, flavorful Chinese food. It's a true classic establishment for dim sum - the kind of place that feels timeless & reliable.
The servers are funny & full of personality, which just adds to the charm of the experience. Always a satisfying visit.
Very tricky to find parking as it's almost always jam-packed!

Classic Dim Sum experience, nothing grandiose but nothing poorioso. The lights are perfectly dim & food sums up everything about the classical Dim Sum experience.
Chicken feet 🐔 Pork 🐷 Beef 🐄 Shrimp 🍤 Tofu 🐪 Noodole 🍜 You name it, they got it.
Unfortunately, I do not speak the language of the great big China, so I must communicate in the language of the ASL & English. Maybe one day I'll learn Chinese (Da chia how juung go, chuunzai, wu yo BING CHILLING) Other than that, service is good. Aunties are nice & uncles are nice :)
I have been here before, & it is your typical Chinese restaurant with fair service. However i did like the food, but not everyone in our party did.
What annoyed me the most was when one waiter waited behind us while my father in law was counting the money to pay the bill. He is a senior & can be slow, but the waiter wouldnt move away & kept reminding us that the tip was extra!!
My father was a successful restaurateur in Montreal for decades. I am fully aware good service deserves good tip, but we tipped nonetheless for the'service' we got!
Typical chinese restaurant service with no manners, tact, or class. But i did like the food & the company i was with!!
Great local authentic Chinese restaurant. Large dining room. Lots of staff for quick & friendly service. Also open for dim sum until 2pm each day. Parking can be a challenge during peak hours. Street parking is available. The food is very tasty & the portions are good. Price is fair for the portions that you get. Take out available as well.
On a summer vacation visiting my mom & sister from also my nephew & his LARGE family also in town from Toronto, we came to Tong Por for a family dinner.
As it was on the eve of Ste Jean Baptiste Day holiday in Quebec, the restaurant was not as crowded on a Monday night - as people are traveling or camping.
We were given a large table with rotation capability for easy food access by everyone, We ordered:
* Cantonese Stewed Brisket w/ Daikon
* Sweet & Sour Pork Chops
* Deep Fried Salt & Pepper Tofu Cubes
' Salt & Pepper Fired Chicken
* Beef & Gailan in Oyster Sauce
* Black Bean Steamed Fish
* Crispy Cantonese Chow Mein
The food took a little bit time to come out of the kitchen, but once the first one arrived, the rest came rather quickly in succession. This is a Cantonese restaurant, which is one of our preferred Chinese cuisines, so they were very genuine & delicious. The service was quite good, as we (the visitors from. Toronto & California) happened to hit a heat spell in Montreal; temperature outside was in the high 35°C+, so they gave us a water pitcher with plenty of ice in it so no need to bother them constantly with a large party of 10 people.
In summary, Ville St Laurent used to have quite a few options when it comes to Chinese cuisines - avoiding the need to drive to Montreal Chinatown & parking headaches, however, due to the current economy & past COVID consequences, Tong Por is miraculously still serving St Laurent & its vicinity. So, if like us, you're craving for some yummy Cantonese cuisines & not wanting to bother fighting the traffic, give Tong Por a try.

This is simply a great place to hold informal, large, family lunches or dinners for an affordable price. Good, solid Chinese food, large portions, extensive menu, very child-friendly, good service. It's been around for ages & for a good reason. Check it out. You won't be disappointed.
There are various delicious small portions of Chinese meals on the trolley shuttled between the tables, & the service staff will introduce & deliver them kindly.
Excellent food, we cannot get enough of it! I am told by my Chinese friends that it's really genuine Chinese food, traditional recipes. The servers are nice as well, sometimes is not easy to communicate with some of them but it's all good, we figure it out!
I'm from California & that doesn't mean anything except for the fact that I'm coming from San Francisco where the Asian population is big & I've been looking, looking & LOOKING for good, authentic Chinese food like the one I'm used to since the 1980s & that may mean different things to different people but I've always gone to authentic Chinese Resto's with Chinese owners since I was a child--- WELL FOLKS, I've finally found my place after almost THREE LONG YEARS in Montreal without a good Chinese Resto to go to! My rating is based on a take-out order so my service experience was a phone call & a credit card transaction, but at pick-up, the staff bowed & greeted me & were quite kind. I brought my delicious won ton soup, beef broccoli, & chicken fried rice home only to DEVOUR every bite! It was SO good! Honestly, one of the best won ton soups I've ever tasted. This place needs more ratings so that's why I'm here. I can't wait to go again!
We had not been here for some years before we decided to have some chinese food that was somewhere other than Chinatown. I will go back to Chinatown when someone decides to make tasty food instead of cheap food.
But Tongpour had left a good impression on some of us & we were not disappointed when we did return.
The place is not much to look at a large room holding over 300 or maybe even 400 (dim sum sized) & the parking outside is a nightmare to navigate, don't ask.
We always have the same thing because of a very determined member of our group so its Cantonese chow mein, rice & eggplant which is quite good.
The dishes are huge & you can easily feed twice as many persons as you would think. But our determined friend eats nothing that swims or crawls in water & it is too bad because the salt & pepper shrimp are just too good to be true & at about 12$ for 10-12 shrimps they are a steal.
The soups are good & one day we will try something else I am sure .
Need Chinese save yourself the grief of downtown eat here & walk there ..cars are a hazzard near this area

First time we went there in February. Yesterday was our second time. Both times we were extremely pleased. This place so far is the best Chinese place that we have discovered. I also tried Chinese beer for the first time here, which I liked very much.
Sure the parking is a pain & the line up is at times long on the weekends. But that's part of the charm. Sure beats driving around in circles looking for & paying for parking in Chinatown.
The Dim Sum has a fairly good selection & the quality is above average.
There's a huge Chinese market at the other end of the mall that I like to visit after Dim Sum.
