I recently visited this sushi restaurant & had a mixed experience overall. The ambiance was a definite highlight-stylish, relaxing, & perfect for a date night.
In terms of food, it was a bit hit-or-miss. The otoro nigiri stood out as exceptional-buttery, fresh, & beautifully presented. Comparable to ones I've had in Japan. Unfortunately, the sashimi was underwhelming, lacking the flavor & texture you'd expect at this price point. The maki rolls were decent but enjoyable enough.
The main drawback was the slow service. While the staff was polite, the wait times between courses felt too long, especially for a Monday night. The server also didn't bring soy sauce or wasabi/ginger the entire night.
Final verdict: Come for the ambiance & the otoro, but manage your expectations on the rest of the menu & service speed.View more
So happy I discovered hidden fish because it is by far the best Sushi in Montreal. It is a vibrant yet cozy spot with an extensive & authentic Japanese menu. There was not one menu item ordered that lacked flavour or tasted generic. Each roll & sashimi ordered was unique & presentation was spot on. A must visit spot.View more
Absolutely top-tier sushi. Every roll, nigiri, & sashimi was the most elegantly & tastily prepared-so flavorful that no soy sauce was needed. Our waiter was excellent, & multiple staff members helped us throughout the meal. Everyone was incredibly attentive without being intrusive. A standout dining experience from start to finish. Highly recommend.View more
Treated my boyfriend for his birthday, & it exceeded all expectations! Every bite was sooo good. We decided to try to some special tender pieces we hadn't had before, notably o-toro & chutoro, which melted in our mouth & left us speechless with how good they were! Our server was attentionate & knowledgeable, at first we ordered the 30piece sashimi mix but he recommended 12 would be a more appropriate quantity. I appreciate the honesty, & he was right. Another high note is the rolls, chu maki. They're my favourite item because they're complex, but every flavor & texture is justified to form the final fireworks. At the end of the meal, they treated us to a dessert for his birthday. Overall, Hidden Fish is a really great spot. It was expensive, but I was extremely happy with our experience.View more
Went here for my birthday & it was absolutely phenomenal. Very high end experience. Best sushi I've ever eaten (& my wife agrees with her roll, as well). Didn't even reach for the soy sauce or wasabi. The flavor was perfect.View more
They age fish & wagyu in-house, & charge a hefty premium on the aged pieces as compared to the already very expensive staples.
With interesting ingredients & aged meats, I was really looking forward to the meal. Overall, I had nothing bad, but It's not really the sushi experience I hoped for. Everything was smothered in fragrant sauces & toppings, taking away from the delicate flavours of the component ingredients & the star proteins. If I had gone in not expecting sushi, but a Japanese-fusion crudo experience, i probably would have felt better. At the same time, I would not have ordered the premium cuts.
Sitting at the counter with the meat aging fridge right in front of me, I could not pass up a chance to try some. We ordered the aged otoro sashimi, which came topped with some caviar. It was probably the best dish of the night, as it had the least added sauce/seasoning. It was not the richest otoro, & I could not discern any difference in texture or flavour from non-aged, but it had a nice bite & flavour all the same.
We tried several different nigiri. This was where the sushi-disappointment set in. The rice was really heavily seasoned, almost like a sweet teriyaki, & every piece of fish was first slathered in strong sauce & then covered with pungent toppings. The unagi was ok, as the Smokey flavour of the Bonito topping complemented the eel, & you are expecting a sweet & saucy bite anyway. The chutoro was the least sauced, but was also the least fresh tasting of the fish.
In the rolls, we ordered a vegetable & pickle roll, a tuna roll, & a crab roll. The veg & crab were in a soy skin instead of nori, which didn't have much flavor & had an odd texture. The crab was probably my favourite of the three, as the meat flavour went well with the very sweet sauce.
The staff were all very nice & very helpful, & service was relaxed & low pressure, which I appreciated.
At well over $400 for two, where I left still hungry, I highly doubt I will return. Sad because the ingredients have so much potentialView more
Sushi Hidden Fish Beautiful, Elegant, Elevated. A Truly impressive sushi experience, I heard great things but was not prepared for the level of skill, incredible taste & freshness. The decor is a notable highlight, large selection of imported Saki, they have a private room upstairs for larger groups as well, equally beautiful as the rest of the spaces. The Nigiri was my favorite, 6 assorted pieces.. spoke to the waiter & asked for another round & it came out completely different the second time, which was an amazing surprise! the Blue-fin tuna was my favorite. I tried the Uni, the Waygu Beef & a couple other unique rolls, All perfect. Overall the experience was one for the books, I will surely be back & with more colleagues. Thanks for having me. Cheers!View more
When you first go In, it's really pretty & the service is incredible Once you sit down it is still pretty nice then when you order the server goes through like 15 minutes of rules you can barely change any thing obout the rolls. over all not a good place for kids I as a kid writing this did not enjoy itView more
Everything I had here was special. I ordered green salad, 12 pieces (6 kinds) of sashimi, scallop hand roll (temaki), & seared albacore Maki (8 pieces). Fish was fresh.... But also prepared very well. The waiter, Matthew, knows so much & helped me to choose. He is very knowledgeable. I loved this place. Absolutely recommended.View more
Amazing experience. Sat at the sushi bar & enjoyed watching the Chefs work & insightful information on how the fish is prepared. We went with the Chefs choice sashimi & nigiri & finished with a nice Maki roll. Top Notch service & food...exactly what we were looking for.View more
The best sushi I had in Montréal! I ordered takeout on their website. They were very accommodating re gluten allergy. Sushi was delicious. I had sashimi, nigiri & rolls & they were all over my high expectations. This will be my go-to fancy sushi place for special occasions.View more
HO. LEE. SH*T... I'm a huge foodie. In my 12+ years of eating fancy, I have never teared up from a single bite of food. This was not an emotional - I'm so lucky to be here - thing, it was a physical response to how mouthwateringly decadent some of the nigiri pieces were. WOW! Wilson was a treat to us as well, really enhanced the experience. TL;DR - if you're looking for the REAL DEAL, this is the spot. Otoro, wagyu, do the thing. PS: I was a roll guy before this. Rolls are great, but if you want to experience Japan on a plate, go nigiri, you will not be disappointedView more
I appreciate the manager's thought for moving us to a more intimate/romantic table following our reservation, the sushi rolls were delicious (highly recommend the wagyu maki, wow!). Service was friendly, there is a nice romantic atmosphere, perfect place for a date night with a partner. As the waiter said I won't ever be able to eat sushi the same elsewhere haha. Loved our dinner & my partner enjoyed the sushi as well!View more
We had 4 different rolls (avocado, tuna tartare, nobunaga & gravlax), 300ml sake & a dessert to share. For 2 it was more than enough & absolutely delicious ! The atmosphere was very calm, a perfect dating spot.View more
**Edited, Feb 2024** Went again thinking it was the same quality but it wasn't... pieces are smaller, sashimis were very thick & less sauce used in rolls. Pretty deceived. Service still great Extremely delicious food & great presentation. It's a pretty place too! Downside was waiting time to get the food, otherwise great experience.View more
(Update Feb 2024) .... Awesome experience. We had an early reservation 5:45 & had Matthew as a waiter he was excellent. Explained everything & provided a lot of great suggestions. I'm gluten free so he helped me navigate everything that's gluten free. We have (3) different types of nigiri & (3) rolls. Favorite roll was the torched albacore. Great experience highly recommended Really great!! Would love to come back, Florence was our waitress & she was excellent. Sushi was unreal & they accommodated gluten free so well with no problem! Kudos to the team at hidden fish! 🐟View more
Had an amazing dinner with my husband here. Some of the freshest tastiest sushi I've ever had. Definitely recommend the torched albacore roll! We sat at the sushi bar & had a great time. Matthew, our server, was great at guiding us through the menu & giving good recommendations. Definitely recommend making this part of your Montreal trip!View more
We were done eating, waiter asked us if we wanted dessert we said no, he was going to get the bill & another waiter came to bring us another roll after 45 minutes & we told him we just asked for the bill & that we were no longer hungry. The manager claimed not be able to cancel the other. They made us take it to go & charged us for it. No good will gesture of any kind. Would not go back, so turned off.
Hidden Fish is my all time favourite sushi restaurant in Montreal! I’ve tried so many places & none compare in the slightest. The sushi is ALWAYS fresh & the taste is unreal. I’ve never tried a bad roll of sushi, no matter what I get. The service is always amazing, & the atmosphere is just beautiful & peaceful. Overall, this will always be my favourite sushi in Montreal & I always recommend everyone to try it.View more
beautiful restaurant & the staff were very welcoming & accommodating.
highly recommend the nigiri. we also ordered the salmon roll & a tuna tataki roll. the salmon was a bit on the sweeter side personally but still good. the lychee martini is also goodView more
My experience at this sushi restaurant was highly disappointing. From the moment we sat down, we felt pressured to rush our order, even though we wanted to take our time & enjoy the dining experience. What baffled me even more was when I inquired about keeping the menu to possibly order more later, I was told that they were concerned about people getting water on it & would have to print another one (despite patrons spending significant amounts of money here).
The quality of the food was equally disappointing. The tuna we were served had an overwhelmingly fishy taste, rendering the rolls inedible. When we brought this issue to the waiter's attention, the manager's response was disheartening. Instead of addressing our concerns, we were told that everyone else seemed to be enjoying it that night, & we were left with no option but to tough it out.
Overall, this dining experience left a lot to be desired. The rushed service, unwillingness to accommodate a simple menu request, & the poor quality of the food, along with the dismissive attitude from the manager, made it a regrettable visit…View more
Nigiris are amazing; but tried 4 rolls of makis & they were mediocre- the hidden fish maki was a disappointment for 65$.
Overrated & overpriced.
The sushi rolls are extremely small. I don't mind the price but give me the size that goes with it. My cocktail was 80% ice & 20% drink. I won't go back.
This is definitely one of my top 5 sushi restaurants in Montreal.
The service was top of the line, & although they made a small mistake on my order, they fixed it right away. The ambience was super relaxed, & the decor was perfect.
I strongly suggest sticking with only nigiri & sashimi. We tried the rolls & they were good, but the rice was only so-so. They don't use the same rice as they do for the nigiri.
Overall, as I mentioned earlier, this is one of my top five sushi restaurants!
I would go here for drinks & a few snacks before heading somewhere else for dinner, fun ambience & pretty restaurant. Not very good sushi for the price. Unless you really love fusion rolls then you might enjoy.
Sushi was good but at $35 for a crab roll, you expect to be knocked off your feet & well fed. It I was neither. Sparkling water was $12 a bottle (seriously? This isn't the Champs Élysée) & the server didn't know what a gin martini was. Though, he did work hard to upsell my 11 year old on a $37 salmon roll (smart kid, didn't bite!). We wont be back when you can go to Park & spend the same money & get a 5 star meal.
Excellent sashimi, taste & texture were incredible. Very good sushi rolls. Attentive service. On the higher price side, worth the splurge.
3 stars & a half but this premium restaurant has more potential.
Ingredients were fresh, food was great, food display was beautiful, rolls were rolled tight.
Reception at the front should be more courteous. We did arrive 15 minutes late, I'll give them that, but we were greeted with "Just so you know, 20 minutes will be deducted from your time because you arrived late." Not the greeting that you would expect from such a highly rated restaurant. Just a friendly reminder of the time the table would be needed for the next service would have been just fine & much more welcoming.
We had a new waitress, she told us right off the bat that she was in training, which was fine - she was much more polite than the person at the reception. We needed more detailed suggestions though - another waitress came to tell us about suggestions for on & off menu items (their wagyu duck foie gras was truly excellent).
This place isn't exactly cheap (our bill was a little over 400$ for two) & we expected this (my husband has been here with his friend before). My husband took me here because he thought it was very good last time, but we both agreed that this time, the service (therefore our overall experience) could have been better. When you come to a restaurant like this, you expect to pay for the whole experience, not just the food.
Pros: Location, atmosphere, details were all great. Fish was extremely fresh & perfect, crab roll was really quite amazing with the mango sauce. Also one of the food runners was seriously amazing, went through details of every dish he brought & included personal details to it.
Cons: our first dish was bought to the table, it was a tuna tataki, instead of the tuna tartare that we ordered. We weren't expecting that dish & asked this other food runner what it was, & she actually did not know.
