I recently visited this sushi restaurant & had a mixed experience overall. The ambiance was a definite highlight-stylish, relaxing, & perfect for a date night.
In terms of food, it was a bit hit-or-miss. The otoro nigiri stood out as exceptional-buttery, fresh, & beautifully presented. Comparable to ones I've had in Japan. Unfortunately, the sashimi was underwhelming, lacking the flavor & texture you'd expect at this price point. The maki rolls were decent but enjoyable enough.
The main drawback was the slow service. While the staff was polite, the wait times between courses felt too long, especially for a Monday night. The server also didn't bring soy sauce or wasabi/ginger the entire night.
Final verdict: Come for the ambiance & the otoro, but manage your expectations on the rest of the menu & service speed.View more

Came here with my fiancé for our last night in Montreal. I wanted to make sure we had good seafood, & the reviews & photos looked really good, so we ordered the 12 pc fresh sashimi & the 24 piece dry-aged sashimi as well.
The food was fine: the texture was nice & there was no fishy smell indicating freshness; however, if you're paying $65 to >$100 dollars on sashimi, I think the least the restaurant could do would be to give you real wasabi, not the fake tube stuff rolled into a ball.
Also, for a restaurant at this price point, inventory of the food &/or drinks should have been tracked better. We were told 3 times, certain drinks & even dessert were not available to us.
One last thing, our server was fine until after we ordered our food, which afterwards, was quite dismissive & seemed upset with us when he told us they didn't have the matcha dessert for the night. It was quite off-putting.
If you want really good sushi/sashimi, save the money for a trip to Japan to get the good stuff for a better price.View more

They age fish & wagyu in-house, & charge a hefty premium on the aged pieces as compared to the already very expensive staples.
With interesting ingredients & aged meats, I was really looking forward to the meal. Overall, I had nothing bad, but It's not really the sushi experience I hoped for. Everything was smothered in fragrant sauces & toppings, taking away from the delicate flavours of the component ingredients & the star proteins. If I had gone in not expecting sushi, but a Japanese-fusion crudo experience, i probably would have felt better. At the same time, I would not have ordered the premium cuts.
Sitting at the counter with the meat aging fridge right in front of me, I could not pass up a chance to try some. We ordered the aged otoro sashimi, which came topped with some caviar. It was probably the best dish of the night, as it had the least added sauce/seasoning. It was not the richest otoro, & I could not discern any difference in texture or flavour from non-aged, but it had a nice bite & flavour all the same.
We tried several different nigiri. This was where the sushi-disappointment set in. The rice was really heavily seasoned, almost like a sweet teriyaki, & every piece of fish was first slathered in strong sauce & then covered with pungent toppings. The unagi was ok, as the Smokey flavour of the Bonito topping complemented the eel, & you are expecting a sweet & saucy bite anyway. The chutoro was the least sauced, but was also the least fresh tasting of the fish.
In the rolls, we ordered a vegetable & pickle roll, a tuna roll, & a crab roll. The veg & crab were in a soy skin instead of nori, which didn't have much flavor & had an odd texture. The crab was probably my favourite of the three, as the meat flavour went well with the very sweet sauce.
The staff were all very nice & very helpful, & service was relaxed & low pressure, which I appreciated.
At well over $400 for two, where I left still hungry, I highly doubt I will return. Sad because the ingredients have so much potentialView more

The service & atmosphere 10/10. Waiter was well-informed & the chef's seemed very competent! Not all every sushi piece was great but overall, it is a good-tasting sushi restaurant. It's the aftermath that did not sit so well. I am not sure how fresh their ingredients were for the 5pm sitting but immediately after leaving the restaurant, I could feel that the food was not going to sit well. Food poisoning? I'm sure you can fill in the blanks of what happened as soon as I got home. I've eaten at numerous sushi restaurants all over Japan & at fish markets as well; never had this kind of stomach upset at an somewhat middle/high-end restaurant. I recently discovered an amazing place - Sushi Hidden Fish! To be honest, I've been looking for a restaurant with authentic Japanese cuisine in Montreal for a long time, & here it is! The atmosphere there is simply incredible - calm & cozy, with a modern interior, but at the same time you can feel the spirit of Japan. The sushi & sashimi are to die for! Everything is very fresh & beautifully presented. It is clear that the products are of the highest quality, & the chefs know their stuff. The prices, of course, are not the lowest, but believe me, it's worth it! The service is also top notch - the waiters are very attentive & friendly. In general, if you want to try real Japanese cuisine in Montreal, I highly recommend Sushi Hidden Fish. Just book a table in advance, otherwise there may not be any seats. Everything I had here was special. I ordered green salad, 12 pieces (6 kinds) of sashimi, scallop hand roll (temaki), & seared albacore Maki (8 pieces). Fish was fresh.... Love this restaurant. Small but great vibe. If you like sashimi, this is the place to go. Reservations are recommended, especially on the weekends. I came here for dinner. The sashimi platter was delicious. All the fish were so fresh. We also had the scallop sashimi & salmon noodles. The salmon noodles were ok. Not my favourite. The service was amazing. One of the better sushi places in Montreal. Very fresh & tasty fish. Wide selection that you don't normally find, all different types of toro. Reasonably priced sake selection as well. The only negative is that they won't let you order a side of sushi rice. It's the only sushi place that's not omakase only I've ever been to that won't serve you rice. Really weird.View more

The fish used to be fresh whenever i ordered in, & this is why I used to love this restaurant. Lately, however, I have ordered in a few times, & I am sad to say that the tuna did not look fresh & the white fish smelled funny. I am disappointed. I also went there in person & the person at the door was very rude & dismissive. He asked if we had reservations even though the restaurant was empty. I must point out though that our waiter was very nice, it's just the person at the door who was disrespectful. Nevertheless it is disappointing to see an establishment treating customers this way. Will not come back & will go to places where customers are treated with respect.View more
