Berto feels somewhat out of sync with its location. Villeray is a welcoming, family-oriented, community-driven neighborhood with a relaxed, unpretentious vibe, while the restaurant leans toward a more formal, upscale dining experience.
The food was excellent, & the service was impeccable. You can tell how much thought, care, & talent go into every dish & service. Each plate is beautifully executed, showcasing Italian cuisine with creativity, precision, & great flavour.
Where it fell short for me was the atmosphere. It felt more curated than genuinely welcoming, & I never got that effortless sense of hospitality & conviviality that makes Italian restaurants so special.
It's clearly a thoughtfully executed restaurant with a talented team behind it, but for me, the overall experience lacked the warmth & authenticity I was hoping for. I could easily see Berto appealing to an older clientele looking for a refined, quiet dinner in the north end of the island.
Service & accueil hors pair. Nourriture raffinée. Nous avons goûté à plusieurs plats & ils étaient tous excellents. Accord mets vin parfait
C'est le début d'une très belle aventure. Je recommande fortement
Absolument tout était délicieux & parfaitement exécuté. Nous nous sommes rendus jusqu'au dessert, qui en valait vraiment la peine.
Bravo! Nous y retournerons.
Tout était parfait. Un restaurant must.
The food was exceptional. Incredible precision & execution in every dish, showing refinement, restraint, & incredible care. Delicious. Service was wonderful, the wine list is something else. Isabelle our server was a delight & (also) Isabelle the co-owner is incredibly passionate & knowledgeable about wine. We had a fantastic bottle with our meal. Decor is refined & understated with particularly nice lighting sourced from a number of local Montreal artisans.
Desserts can often be a letdown but here they were as thoughtful & inspired as the main courses. A true gem in Montreal, highly recommend.
The food was traditional & truly authentic, with beautiful seasonal ingredients. The portions were perfect, & the pasta transported me right to Bologna. The tortelli & the Quebec white asparagus were outstanding. & the desserts-wow! The gelato was the closest to Italy I've tasted in Montreal. A truly exceptional experience!
Went to Berto a few weeks ago & was excited to try it out. My girlfriend & I were seated at the bar & the restaurant wasn't too busy when we arrived at 8pm.
The food was excellent but the rest of the experience was pretty underwhelming. The appetizers came out quickly but there were 40 minute delays before serving the next courses. In the end, it took over 3 hours for 5 plates, so we called it a night. Service was awkward & rather than acknowledge the wait time, the waiters/bartenders hid during the delay. Which we didn't mind, until we ran out of wine.
Not sure why the kitchen was this backed up but there were better ways to handle this. Given the price, I wouldn't bother again, even though some of the plates were incredible.
The good is exquisite & the décor elegantly understated. Do expect to strain to hear your dining companions & waiter, though, because for some reason music is loudly playing.
Exquisite food, each dish was meticulously arranged with an interesting mix of ingredients. The atmosphere & decor was perfect, not too loud so that our group of 4 could hear ourselves & comfortable seating. Happy to have found this new gem.
