Osmo X Marusan is widely recognized for its unique industrial bunker-style aesthetic, beautiful natural lighting, and vibrant, music-heavy atmosphere that attracts a steady stream of students and socializers. The café is frequently praised for its high-quality matcha, hojicha lattes, and Japanese-inspired menu, with many patrons highlighting the egg and katsu sandwiches as satisfying highlights. While the interior design and overall vibe are consistently described as a major draw, experiences vary regarding food consistency, wait times, and noise levels. Some visitors find the portions small or the flavors mild, while others appreciate the fresh ingredients and cozy terrace. Despite occasional reports of slow service or crowded conditions, many guests consider it a must-visit destination in Montreal for its stylish environment and distinctive drink offerings.
Very happy with my experience here. Seats by the wall have plugs for remote working & the staff are super friendly. It gets pretty busy during lunch & their sandwichs (which i did not have) looks phenomenal!
Delicious sandwiches, the karage chicken was the best, & the pork katsu was okay. Got the raspberry matcha & yuzu lemonade. Really cool cafe architecturally.
Tucked away in what almost feels like a hidden alley, Osmo x Marusan opens up into one of the coolest & most beautifully designed cafés I've visited. The modern interior is stunning, & once the sunlight hits the disco ball & reflects throughout the shared space, the atmosphere becomes something truly special. There's a reason there's always a line. The atmosphere for me is the biggest pull for this cafe.
We came early in the morning & tried the hojicha latte, matcha latte, the matcha with poured-over espresso, croissants, & both the chocolate & matcha cookies. The cookies were the standout from the pastry side-solid, satisfying, & definitely worth ordering. It's not seeet, right chewiness. The drinks were all very good, although I'd say Montreal already has many excellent cafés, so the beverages themselves weren't necessarily unique.
Another standout in this place is the overall experience from the crew, they were all fantastic-kind, welcoming, & genuinely helpful.
Brunch service starts at 11 AM, & we stayed to try the chicken katsu with rice & the pork katsu curry. Both bowls were crispy, tender, & beautifully executed. The biggest surprise was the chicken katsu: despite using breast meat, it was incredibly juicy & tender. They absolutely got it right. Topped it off with Hojicha tiramisu which felt good to seal off the appetite.
Taking everything into account-the food, drinks, service, & especially the atmosphere-this is easily one of the best café experiences I've had out of the hundreds that I've been to.
Excellent sandwiches (tamago & karage chicken are standouts), drinks, & the architecture is pretty fascinating too. Outside patio is cooler than you'd think, even in the hot summer, & very tranquil.
The building & entrance is hard to spot. There's a nice industrial vibe inside. The matcha is weak & powdery I would not recommend. Coffee was 10/10. The egg sandwich was delicious with deep fried breaded jammy boiled eggs. Keep in mind the kitchen does not open until 11 am if you're going for the sandwich. I would go back for the coffee & egg sandwich.
