About

Onigiri Shop specializes in the preparation of traditional Japanese rice balls, emphasizing high-quality short-grain rice and a diverse array of classic fillings. The menu focuses on the fundamental balance between seasoned seaweed wrappers and savory protein or vegetable centers, ensuring consistent textures throughout every handheld serving. Each unit is carefully molded to maintain structural integrity while highlighting the natural starch profile of the core ingredients. Beyond simple rice balls, the selection incorporates regional Japanese culinary influences that prioritize freshness and nutritional utility without unnecessary complexity. The production process remains dedicated to authentic preparation methods that celebrate the simplicity of the base components. Guests experience a streamlined approach to Asian portable food that values speed and precision above all other elements of the culinary process.

Review Summary

Onigiri Shop offers a polarizing experience where patrons frequently praise the fresh ingredients, generous portions, and overall atmosphere, noting that the food is both affordable and delicious. While many enjoy the variety of items like the mini ramen and various onigiri, recurring issues with service inconsistency, long wait times, and reported rudeness from staff during busy periods dampen the experience for some. Opinions on quality remain split, with some customers finding the food consistently excellent and others highlighting significant fluctuations in preparation, availability of menu items, and professionalism. Overall, the restaurant is viewed as a convenient and tasty spot for a quick bite, though the quality of customer service and operational reliability appear to be areas that require improvement.

Quality really dropped since it opened. Some employees make awfully shapped onigiri with too much rice. Consistently never have the Korean friend chicken onigiri - at this point just remove it from the menu.

Place is wildly inconsistent & the staff is not trained to deal with rushes, always order ahead of time.
This week though was something, Wednesday I placed an online order at 5:10, arrive at 5:30 for pickup & it's not ready. I wait 20 minutes, I see my ticket is first but it's ignored, the girl making the rice balls is clearly new, she's a bit lost, asking questions but her guy coworker isnt helping or answering. There's about 10 people in store waiting & he's just taking orders instead of stopping to help her out. He dissapears in the back for a bit, comes back out to take more orders.
At 5:55 I ask for a refund, he says he doesn't have time, but rushes to go my my drink & single rice ball, he gives it to me with a nice sarcastic'are you happy'

So as a tip: Train your staff properly, they're rice balls. It's supposed to be a quick pick up, not an hour. Honestly an'Im sorry we're jammed' would have soothed things over instead of your staff being so rude. Stop taking orders when you're overwhelmed, get your hands in & finish the line of orders especially when your only staff doing it is trying to learn.

Very bland, no flavor at all. A lot of rice & bland filling. Ordered the miso beef & it was very dry with no sauce or flavor. Also had the salmon & shrimp onigiri, & they were just as bland.

A bit over rated in my opinion. Went there last night & they did not have raw salmon. All the salmon options were unavailable which was very disappointing to me & all the group we went with.
The staff was a bit confused & not helpful at all but that's okay. We ordered the spicy tuna wakame onigiris & they were decent. Not too special. But not bad at all.
The rice to protein ratio was embarrassing but that's what you expect from cheap eats in Montreal. Each one was 6$ which is very cheap but I would say you need 2 or 3 if you wanna make it a meal instead of a snack.

Onigiris usually suffer from the deception of being mostly rice with very little inside. This place has none of that. Every single one of their onigiris are packed to the brim. So much that at times, it bursts from how packed it is. Ingredients are fresh. Rice is just right. The basics are always the toughest to refine, but this place has those basics down to perfection. & the Mini Ramen is always a joy to add. & so affordable. Where else can you be so satisfied for less than 15? Highly recommend.

I gave this place a second chance based on reviews so it's not consistent. But the second time was full of flavour, delicious full of meat & warm. The first time I went it was cold & mostly rice with little flavor. I'd try again to see if they are more consistent.

Me & my friend came here a couple of times already & 3/5 visits, we kept finding hair in our onigiri. They were nice enough to offer a refund or replace our food though. But three times out of five that I've visited, there must be something wrong here. Food is great when the rice isn't mostly mushy. I found the Monkland branch to serve better rice.
I was surprised to find out that they don't sell the plushies like the monkland branch. This place could use a lot more cozy decorations & lighting too. I also noticed that they give free food to certain customers. They used to have a weekly challenge for free drinks but I don't know how to get the free food. It's mostly the bearded guy that talks & gives free stuff to people. Seems to be a nice guy.
