My partner & I had the absolute pleasure of experiencing the 16-course omakase at Nama with the incredibly talented Chef GaCong Ruan - & let me tell you, this was nothing short of magical. 🍣🍷
I've had the privilege of dining at some of the finest restaurants around the world, & Nama has officially earned a spot in my Top 3 Japanese culinary experiences. I'm genuinely confident this gem 💎 is on its way to a Michelin star - they wholeheartedly deserve it. 🌟🇯🇵
From the mesmerizing music 🎶 to the elegant & intimate atmosphere ✨, every detail sets the stage for a deeply immersive dining journey. The sake & wine pairings were divine 🍶🍷, enhancing every dish with thoughtful balance. Each course was a showstopper - layered, surprising, savory, & absolutely unforgettable. I couldn't even pick a favorite because every single plate was a masterpiece 🔥

Nama absolutely checks all my boxes when it comes to dining out. Apart from the 5 stars I'm giving in food/service/atmosphere, they get 5 stars in friendliness, staff knowledgeability, & creativity.
I dined twice, once for the full omakase experience & once with a group of friends à la carte. Both times everything was top notch. Chef-owner GaCong is a gem! A true connoisseur of his craft & his dishes are works of art. He takes his flavours & plating very seriously while maintaining a friendly atmosphere & brightens up the room with his little jokes & smile.
I don't review often, but this is one review I had to leave as I was blown away both times I came here.
The omakase experience is fantastic, ditto for the à la carte menu.
As for selective notes, the salmon tartare is probably the best I've ever had (found both in the omakase & normal menu!), the beef shortrib galbi-jjim was soooo yummy & melted in your mouth, + I've tried about 5 different cocktails & all of them are great.
Trust me, if you want to impress someone, bring them here. They will be left speechless.View more

This was my first Omakase experience & I have to say everything was WOW!
We went as a group of 5, the others had Omakase experience & they we're impressed by the quality & tastefulness of the menu.
Chef GaCong Ruan is really nice to talk with & it shows that he loves what he does. There is passion written all over everything they serve you, he & is team are awesome.
Our group also took a Soft Shell crab plate after our Omakase experience since we saw the plate go by during our dinner & had to try it, it was also amazing.

The 16 course meal was a culinary experience of the palate! Nama has 3 parts which make it exceptional… first is the chef/owner Gacong who is knowledgeable, personable, kind & absolutely witty. He is the main player in this well rounded evening. Second is the atmosphere, it's aesthetically beautiful while remaining inviting, it's fresh & upbeat while still feeling intimate. & lastly, the pièce de resistance… the food! From the well curated ingredients & the chefs ingenious pairings, each bite was a moment in time that you can't get back. It always left you wanting more! As he served up his creations one after the other, you were left wondering how each bite was better than the last. We did try two main dishes as well, the crab & eggplant katsu which were cooked to perfection & aesthetically pleasing to the eye. & let's not forget the cocktails, we tried 5 different ones, each were devine in their own right & had a unique & sultry taste. Overall, the evening was perfect in every sense of the word. If you haven't tried Nama, not sure what you're waiting for. It is well worth every penny!! Kudos to the chef 10/10View more

This is a high-end modern French & Japanese fusion cuisine. The nigiri omakase at lunch was exquisite, the rice was perfect & each fish had a different flavor profile. The highlight for me was the soft shell crab dish, it was excellent, especially the little dabs of lemon/lime gel, blending everything perfectly with the sauce & tying the dish together harmoniously. The restaurant is led by chef-owner GaCong Ruan, who grew up in the restaurant industry, & executive chef Michael Ho, a finalist from'Les Chefs!'. We were lucky to be greeted by them both today! I went in expecting a fancy dinner, but I walked out questioning everything I thought I knew about food, art, & frankly, life itself. From the first dish, it became clear that this wasn't just dinner-it was performance art. GaCong doesn't just prepare sushi; he crafts edible masterpieces with the precision of a neurosurgeon & the flair of a Broadway director. The presentation was so immaculate that I hesitated to eat it, half out of respect & half because I didn't want to ruin the Picasso before me. Every bite was an existential crisis. The kind of flavors that make you reevaluate your childhood memories of eating supermarket sushi. & then there's GaCong himself. A man of infinite skill, he runs the sushi bar like a virtuoso conductor leading a symphony of flavors. GaCong is also a great host with plenty of wonderful tips about Montreal & hockey! This guy isn't just a chef; he's a culinary prophet. Sure, it comes with a hefty price tag, but let's be real-can you really put a price on a spiritual awakening? Nous avions le chef à nous seul, habituellement cette place est pleine, on a donc eu la chance de discuter amplement avec lui & avions reçu de belles attentions. The Chef GaCong treated us to a very memorable 14-course meal, full of fresh ingredients, enticing flavour combinations, & beautiful presentation. There's a very popular Omakase restaurant in Montreal & I always found it a shame that we didn't have more of those experiences. A friend of mine told me about Nama having an Omakase experience & I had to check it out. I'm glad to say that everything about it was fantastic. It's a little more "fusion" then pure Japanese cuisine, but all the meals were great. I highly suggest trying it out if you love trying course style dinner experiences. If you just want a regular dining experience, there's tables & a menu for that as well. A couple of small nitpicks compared to the other Omakase restaurant in MTL: they had us wait before being seated despite us arriving on time, they didn't offer to take our jackets (which can add a little touch of extra service) & they mentioned a cocktail menu, but we never saw/received it. That being said, I want to give a HUGE shoutout to the chef & his team as at the very last minute, I found out that my date was allergic to wheat flour (similar to having to avoid gluten, but she was ok with soya sauce for instance) & initially the waiter said she couldn't get the Omakase & could only eat 2-3 meals in the regular menu. The chef then personally came to our seats to discuss in detail about her allergies & luckily she could take the Omakase thanks to the cuisine substituting 3 dishes just for her. Thank you again Nama for the wonderful dinner & I'll be sure to come back again!View more
