Absolutely amazing culinary experience at Motto Hand Roll! The atmosphere is such a vibe - great energy, beautiful setting, & an experience that feels special from the moment you walk in.
The food is easily a 10/10. Everything is incredibly fresh, & having each hand roll prepared right in front of you & served immediately takes it to another level. This is hand-rolled sushi done right.
I've also been to Motto for a private party, & the experience was just as amazing. The staff & management are always welcoming, attentive, & know how to create a great atmosphere.
I've already been back & will definitely continue going back. One of my favourite spots in Montreal & a must-try for sushi connoisseurs!
Happy to see a handroll concept finally make its way to Montreal. The space is beautiful, the ambience is great, & the food itself was very good. Unfortunately, the service left a lot to be desired.
When we arrived, we were invited to wait in one of the couch areas behind the actual bar, where guests sit, order, & eat. We were a party of two & were handed drink menus, but no one ever came to take our drink order or even offer us water. We waited there for about 15 minutes.
When it was finally time to move to our seats, the waiter simply waved his hand for us to follow him, almost like a police officer directing traffic. Not a single word was exchanged. Once seated, there were menus on the table, but no one explained the concept or how ordering worked. After another 15 minutes, we finally had to ask someone how we were supposed to order, & were told that our waiter would come over.
One small observation: when the waiter eventually explained the different sections of the menu, he repeatedly referred to them as'my hand rolls' &'my crudo' rather than'our hand rolls' or'our crudo.' It's a small detail, but one that always stands out to me in hospitality. Service is a team effort, & language matters when creating a sense of hospitality & ownership.
The food was great, although I found it to be quite overpriced for what it was.
During the meal, I accidentally spilled my drink. The waiter came to take away my plate & wipe the table, but never brought me a new plate or napkin, nor did he ask whether I wanted another drink. I had to ask separately for each of these things.
Then came what felt like the cherry on top. When we wanted to order dessert, we did so, only to be told by the waiter that we should move back to the waiting couches & eat our dessert there. What made this particularly odd was that no one was waiting for our table or sitting in the seats after we left. It gave the impression that the table simply needed to be reset so the waiter could finish service earlier, as we were approaching the end of the evening.
The owner did come by to ask how we enjoyed dinner, & at the time we simply told him everything was fine.
Overall, I really wanted to love this place. The concept is exciting for Montreal, the space is beautiful, & the food is genuinely good. But for a restaurant at this price point, the level of service should be much higher. Hopefully, this was simply an off night, because the concept has a lot of potential.
The service was excellent! Staff were very friendly & attentive. The rolls were ok. The hamachi was the best option, after trying the crab & a few other options. Visited for late dinner (after 10pm) on a weekend.
A great new spot that opened less than a year ago, very cozy, with amazing staff & good house music playing in the background at night.
It's a small, intimate space where the chef prepares your hand rolls & sushi right in front of you. There are no reservations-first come, first served-& seating is limited to about 1 hour & 15 minutes per group.
The food is excellent. The A5 aburi wagyu ($22 per piece), imported from Japan, is definitely a standout. They also offer off-menu items, like a sea urchin hand roll (also from Japan), along with options like salmon, toro ($20 for 2 pieces), & bluefin tuna ($15 for 2 pieces) nigiris.
For tighter budgets, they also offer set menus of 3 to 5 hand rolls at a fixed price, which ends up being more affordable than ordering everything à la carte.
I tried the negui toro, spicy shrimp, bluefin tuna, lobster, & hamachi handrolls, as well as the bluefin tuna & scallop crudo (both $20 for 4 pieces). Everything was fresh & well-executed. My favorite was definitely the toro.
Salmon is from Canada.
Tuna is from Mexico.
We also tried ice cream mochi as dessert.
We also met the owner, who pays close attention to every customer & makes sure everyone is well taken care of-super nice & welcoming.
If you're waiting or have finished eating, there are booths around the bar where you can sit & enjoy drinks. It's a perfect spot for a date or a fun night out with friends.
The drinks are great too-we had an unfiltered sake bottle, & on another visit, a bottle of wine, with a bunch or other cocktails & drinks.
I'd definitely go back.
There's no street parking, but you can find paid parking nearby or park on neighboring streets.
Really beautiful date spot, super vibey & intimate.
The fish they used for the hand rolls was so fresh! The toro roll & salmon roll were the best I think
On y retourne définitivement.
Thought this place was phenomenal, hand rolls compared favorably to several of my favorite spots in New York. Don't miss out on this it's absolutely worth a visit
