Wow just wow. Our first restaurant canceled on us last minute & so we're scrapping to find a place. You won't be disappointed here. Truly a blessing that they canceled because it led us here. First of all the servers, bartender overall the whole staff is so sweet & accommodating. You really feel comfortable here with the service. The food is also so good. The fillet Mignon is literally the softest meat I've ever tasted. Not to mention great soup & escargot. Definitely coming back & not mention a great speciality non alcohol drink selection! The custom cocktails & shots wow the bartender was just wow. His customers wow!!
We were readily seated. Ordered Oysters & beef tartare. Oysters were about quarter sized (I suppose that's what they give for happy hour Oysters). The tartare was the worst I ever had. It wasn't fresh. The color was already turning gray. They tried hiding the gray with parmesean! The worst part is, after ordering the food & a $70 bottle of wine we were asked if we could division finish in 30 minutes because the table at which they sat us was reserved.
I had a lovely dinner. I thought the steak was well presented & oysters were great, too. The fries could have had some garnish on top or had done something to make the plate feel a bit more elevated. Otherwise, I had a great dinner.
Bel endroit, les portions sont petites à inégales d'une assiette à l'autre. Ils ont oubliés notre commande. Manque de rigueur pour ce niveau de restaurant. Aucune toilette, il faut aller au restaurant d'à côté.
I had been to this location before & had an acceptable experience, but this visit was extremely disappointing.
The service was, without question, the worst part of the evening. Our server was rude, impatient, & visibly annoyed whenever we asked for anything. My son has a limited appetite due to a medical condition, so we asked for bread a couple of times (not to mention some of the apps we ordered like Escargot required to be consumed with bread), & each request was met with eye-rolling & an attitude that made us feel like we were inconveniencing her. From the moment we sat down, we felt unwelcome.
For a restaurant at this price point, I also expect the server to explain the menu or mention the daily specials. None of that happened. Instead, we were repeatedly pressured about ordering, which made the entire meal uncomfortable rather than enjoyable.
The food was mediocre at best. I ordered the steak filet & specifically asked for the chef's recommended doneness. The server recommended medium rare, so that's what I ordered. The steak arrived well done (super dry) & had to be sent back. My replacement didn't arrive until about 30 minutes later, by which time everyone else at the table had already finished eating. No apology beyond taking it back, no manager checking in, & no gesture of goodwill or compensation for the mistake.
We also requested separate bills, but the appetizers were placed on the wrong bill, creating even more confusion at the end of the meal.
The sea bass was just average, nothing memorable, especially considering the price.
A great meal is about more than just food. Service matters just as much, & unfortunately this restaurant failed badly in that respect. I understand this is a busy, tourist-heavy area, but that's not an excuse for poor hospitality or lack of professionalism. Also, the washrooms were broken so we had to use the neighbor restaurant's restroom.
I've had a much better experience at other Mignon's location. Based on this visit, however, I would not return to this Old Montréal location & cannot recommend it.
Visited twice during a short trip. If I lived here this would be my local. Food was great but the hospitality by the bartender Lucas is what made the experience a stand out. The corner spot at the bar is perfect to take in the thoughtful design & details of the space. We had a great time & it felt less rushed & more personal than the rest of the places in the area.
