Review Summary

Louis Luncheonette is described as a fast casual spot with quick service, generous portions and a retro, old fashioned vibe. Poutine is praised for the right balance of crispy fries, plenty of cheese curds and flavorful gravy, with some reviewers calling it the best they have had in the world. Menu items like burgers and a veggie option are seen as solid value, and the atmosphere is colorful and reminiscent of early fast food franchises. The staff are repeatedly noted as friendly, efficient and attentive, and the place is described as clean and homey, with a lively family friendly ambiance. Some posts note changes over time after ownership shifts, including reports of undercooked meat, altered fry and cheese levels, and sauce inconsistencies, which have led to disappointment in certain orders. Gluten free poutine gets specific praise, and the venue is often recommended for takeout due to big portions and good value. Overall the restaurant is regarded as an institution with nostalgic appeal, though opinions vary about recent tweaks.

Louis is an institution in Sherbrooke. They have been going since the 1940s. If you like junk food but not junk capitalism, I suggest you support this local business rather than places like McDonalds. The quality of fries at Louis is much better than McDonalds anyway (or any similar corporate fast food joint) as they are a little crispier & bigger, perfect in a poutine. If you are in Quebec on holiday & you want to try a poutine, Louis is a failsafe option: big portions, the right consistency & flavour of gravy, plenty of cheese curds so rubbery they clean your teeth, & fries of just the right consistency, that do not go too soggy in the gravy. The service is good too, & everything has a slightly old-fashioned & rustic feel. Even the order tickets seem to have an authenticity lacking in McDonalds & similar places (sorry Ronald). They are printed from a machine & not the till. Louis, can I have my free poutine now? (Just joking).

Update: Decided to try it again. Bifteck. No sauce or bread included, like the old owners use to include. Just fries, meat & onion. Total cost $17! Look at the mess they made for takeout. The meat is a little on the raw side. Total ripoff! Never going back after 40 years of being a customer. Keep serving undercooked meat & maybe one day you will get a visit from an inspector. I'm really disappointed with you guys.

Since this restaurant has changed owners they no longer make their famous Louis fries anymore. I think they're using frozen fries now. They put less cheese on their poutines. Been eating at Louis since my childhood. I know the food well. It has changed, & not for the better.

Portions have been cut down but still the best & cheapest place for poutine hot dogs smoked meat burgers & club sandwiches. New owners are smart keeping the fresh ingredients & classic menu. Takeout is slow 15-30 mins for a club Sandwich? When it's not busy? 😕 Also different portions each time. I paid for chicken not more bread & fries. They should rename club for two. Club for one. 4/6 pieces of chicken if lucky. Sometimes dry sometimes good. No quality check on fries. Sometimes burned sometimes good. It's not what it used to be. Clearly management doesn't care. Too bad used to be a sheebrooke institution. Russian roulette Everytime I decide to eat there. Not everybody wants a "poutine" so if ordered just hotdogs or fries or a poutine I'd get my order faster. 😂
