Review Summary

Reviews paint L'Express as a beloved Montreal institution with a classic Parisian bistro vibe, where comforting French dishes, a lively atmosphere, and a strong wine list create a consistent draw despite occasional price concerns. Dishes frequently highlighted include bone marrow, duck confit, ravioli, octopus, steak frites, and a standout creme brulee or floating island, with some desserts described as exceptional; the bread and pickles are often noted as welcome touchpoints. Service is praised for warmth, attentiveness, and knowledge, though experiences vary with some slower moments or hiccups and a few staff interactions that didn’t meet expectations. The setting can be bustling and noisy, especially late, which suits the energetic vibe but can feel crowded to some; signage and navigation occasionally challenge certain visits. Reservations are advised due to high demand, and while the experience is described as vibrant and authentically French, opinions on value and consistency vary. Overall, L'Express remains a top choice for a late night or special occasion in Montreal, offering reliable classics, a charming ambiance, and a sense of having stepped into a Parisian bistro.

came here on a sunday night, service was amazing. loved how you start off with bread & pickles, we ended up getting the buffalo cheese which was incredible. for the price of the steak i would expect a bigger piece, could definitely do with less fries but it tasted good, would do a different main next time. for dessert we got the maple profiteroles which were delicious & the creme brûlée was really good as well but the cookie on top was forgettable. one thing to note, there was no music playing which threw me off. overall a great spot, lovely for a late night dinne

Simplement délicieux / simply delicious - a must when on Saint Denis !!! Very busy spot & a little loud which is understandable.

A wonderful night. The duck confit is tender enough & not too salty, a little bit greasy but very tasty. The bone marrow tastes like some kind of high quality butter, just delicious. I have nothing to complain.

Started with the bone marrow. Was good, but very very oily. The bread & pickles are complementary & for a person who is not too big on pickles I did find myself eating quite a few. For the main I had a difficult time picking between a few things I really wanted to try but ended up picking the risotto which was amazing. Super flavourful, tasted like the sea! Will definitely want to come back again to try other things.

Really nice place for a French meal! The liver pate was amazing. They also provide complimentary bread & pickles to eat it with. The pickles were some of the best I've ever had. The duck confit was also amazing & I'd order it again if I came back. The beef tartare was a bit of a miss though.

Had the steak & fries with the fish soup. The steak was done right to my liking & recommendation (medium rare) & the soup was good. You get to enjoy the bread & butter & the jar of tiny pickles which was awesome. Will repeat!

Been going there for years, I was surprised that I had never reviewed L'Express. It's a charming restaurant on St-Denis, the food is delicious, great variety & the service is on point. I have to admit that on some nights, the servers seem to be running around, but it's nothing really bad. I do recommend this little gem to anyone.

Decent food, attentive wait service, & a pleasant atmosphere. The steak frite was fine; chicken paillard & mussels were slightly under seasoned. Crème brûlée was delicious. île flottante looks more impressive than it tastes. Least impressive was the waiter who took our order. Deigned to answer my question for recommendations & acted as if he was doing me a favor by letting me eat there.

The food was good, not superb. The service staff was sub par, the specials were not explained, no follow up for drink orders, just generally seemed under staffed/inadequately trained.

I didn't know that this place was kinda famous. This was the only French place that I saw open on google at midnight. The reviews were great so I decided to go. It was busy but not too packed. The service was really good & the food was excellent. The quiche, I hope I didn't misspell it, I only had a year of French in high school. It was great & the rum tart I had was even better. The vibe of the place was energetic. They have rotary phones & the place is painted dark red. This is only the second French restaurant they I've been to but it made a great impression. The first was in Savannah, Ga. The next time I make a long road trip to Montréal from Florida I will stop by again. The second time I was here I didn't see the rotary phones.

An institution. We never miss a chance when visiting the area. There's nothing like a bottle of wine & a delicious L'Express dinner on a fall Saturday night at 11pm. The food & energy in unparalleled.

Everything about this place is perfection from the food to the service. It's almost hard to decide which one was better. I highly recommend this to anybody who's coming to Montreal we stumbled upon this place after attending Montreal jazz club evening.
