About

Le Trou serves artisanal, hand-rolled bagels that prioritize traditional boiling techniques to achieve a distinctive, chewy texture and a lightly blistered crust. This establishment focuses on creating substantial sandwiches utilizing high-quality cured meats, fresh produce, and house-made spreads layered between freshly toasted bread varieties. A robust selection of caffeinated beverages complements the menu, with a focus on balanced espresso extractions and precision pour-over methods. The interior design emphasizes industrial minimalism, featuring functional seating arrangements that prioritize efficiency for quick consumption. Dedicated preparation spaces ensure that every item remains consistent in composition and flavor profile. By refining the intersection of classic bakery staples and modern sandwich craft, the venue establishes a clear identity centered on reliable, high-volume food production and technical mastery of dough fermentation processes.

Review Summary

Le Trou is widely regarded as a standout destination in Montreal for its fresh, crispy, and chewy bagels that frequently draw comparisons to the city's most famous institutions. Many patrons praise the delicious, high-quality ingredients used in their sandwich selection, highlighting the breakfast deluxe and smoked salmon options as favorites. While the atmosphere is generally described as warm and cozy with friendly service, some guests note that the shop can become uncomfortably hot due to the baking process and that seating is limited. Feedback regarding value and portion sizes is mixed, with some customers feeling that certain sandwiches are overpriced or lack sufficient toppings. Despite occasional inconsistencies in service speed or ingredient availability during busy hours, the overall sentiment remains positive, with many visitors considering it a must-visit local spot for an authentic bagel experience.

Best bagel in Montreal! Always fresh, the recipes are excellent. My favs are: bagel deluxe for breakfast & smoked salmon for lunch.

Good neighborhood bagels with that fresh, Montreal-style vibe - especially if you're grabbing them to go. The bagels I took home were really good later on, so we got to enjoy them for a bit longer.

That said, the menu is pretty limited, & I felt like the sandwiches were overpriced for what you get (tried the smoked salmon, breakfast deluxe & classic sesame & cream cheese). There wasn't enough toppings to justify the price, & by midday some key ingredients (like tomatoes) were already gone. Service can be a bit slow during busy times too, so be prepared for a wait if there's a line.

Overall solid bagels & a nice local spot (parking is a big plus!), but there's room for improvement in value & consistency of toppings/service.

Great bagel, small portion sizes. I got the lox bagel & it was mid quality salmon with a very small amount. Good coffee

This was honestly awful. Charging $13 for an untoasted bagel with a smear of cream cheese & a single tiny slice of smoked salmon is ridiculous. The cream cheese tasted off, which only made it worse. Making a decent bagel is not complicated, yet this completely missed the mark. I wanted to like this place since it's right by my home, but I'd much rather drive & get a significantly better bagel at Solomos for the same price. Not worth it.

Legit one of the best Montreal-style bagel places. Crispy outside & chewy inside, plus excellent salmon to accompany it.

Their bagel made me realize how bad the Costco ones really are. This one had a perfect crispy exterior with great texture - not overly chewy like most. The smoked salmon paired beautifully with the sesame bagel, & every ingredient worked together flawlessly. Absolutely the best bagel I've ever had. I just wish I could find something this good in the U.S.!

The bagels here are definitely a top 3 in Montreal. Personally prefer this over St. Viateur & Fairmount. I usually get the salmon on everything bagel- it's so delicious & well-balanced. The latte (hot) is also made well.
