Le Surcouf is a welcoming French restaurant established in a Victorian home for over 45 years now. Dominique and the chef Serge will be pleased to help you discover the fine French classic cuisine. In the fall the restaurant offers a special game menu in addition to their regular table d'hôte that you create yourself.
Reviews consistently celebrate Le Surcouf for superb traditional French cuisine, artful presentation, and a warm, intimate atmosphere inside an old house with a fireplace that makes dining feel special. Service is described as professional, attentive, and friendly, with knowledgeable staff guiding wine choices and accommodating dietary needs including gluten free options. Many describe it as a West Island gem and a prime spot for anniversaries, family gatherings, and memorable evenings, offering both a refined carte and a reasonably priced Bistro menu. Decor and ambiance receive frequent praise, with quiet, cozy dining rooms, local art, and a welcoming feel that invites lingering. While a few reviews note busier nights can bring noise or slower pacing, the overall consensus is that Le Surcouf delivers consistently high quality, generous portions, and thoughtful touches that keep guests returning. Overall, guests emphasize that the combination of cuisine, service, and setting makes Le Surcouf one of the standout French dining experiences in the area.
The seared foie gras a 10/10, everything I dreamt of, one of the best. However, it all went downhill from there.
The fries that came out with the beef tartare were incredibly soggy & gross. Every single fry was an inch long or less, as if someone had scrounged up all the disgusting leftover bits in oil that should have been thrown in the trash. Not ok.
Long after I was done with my meal, the waitress said that's how the fries normally are, & that they may have just used smaller potatoes. Lol. Never saw her after that, other than when she walked by & just cleared my glass of wine away without asking if I'd like another or if I'd like dessert/the bill.
I asked for my check from the hostess as the waitress acknowledged every table around me, except for mine, & I proceeded to wait 20 min without any help. I literally had to get up from my seat & wait at the hostess stand to pay & leave. The service literally pissed me off & left a horrible taste.
Wonderful Valentine's dinner, delicious mushroom soup, goat cheese phyllo entree, cheese bouchés !

We were a group of 14 celebrating a special birthday. Everything was perfect. I love that there restaurant is divided into different rooms so we had a space all to ourselves. Service was perfect - the waitress was wonderful - patient, smooth & she made her job look effortless . We had what we needed. Everything was beautifully presented & very tasty. The fixed menu option had so many choices - everyone was happy.
Highly recommended.
We've dined at Le Surcouf many times before & have always enjoyed the food & atmosphere. That's why we chose it as the place to celebrate our wedding anniversary with friends. Unfortunately, the service during this visit was far below the standard we've come to expect.
From the beginning of the evening, it felt as though our table had been forgotten. It took quite a while for anyone to bring us menus or a wine list. Once we ordered, the appetizers arrived & were excellent-beautifully presented & full of flavor. The main courses were also delicious, with one exception: my friend's lamb, ordered medium, arrived nearly raw-far closer to blue than rare. She's not picky, but this was clearly undercooked. It took some time to flag someone down to return it to the kitchen, & we noticed another table nearby also sending their meat back.
Dessert was enjoyable, but our coffees were brought to us afterward & served lukewarm. After finishing, we asked for the bill-but again, we were left waiting. We had to ask three different staff members before my husband eventually got up to find someone. He discovered the staff gathered in the back, drinking. When we finally received the bill, the waiter offered only a weak apology & questioned who we had spoken to earlier. I simply told him this wasn't the level of service we were used to, especially for a special occasion. He said nothing in response.
We still appreciate the food & the setting at Le Surcouf, but this experience was disappointing. We hope this was an off night & not a sign of declining standards. We have been to the Surcouf many times in the past.
It was clear that no one on staff knew who was responsible for our table. Throughout the evening, we were approached by five different people, none of whom seemed to be communicating with each other. At a restaurant known for its typically high standards of service, this lack of coordination was especially disappointing.
We live in Ottawa, but for many years now we have come to Le Surcouf for my husbands Birthday dinner in June, usually with some friends. We have traveled a lot in our business life, but Le Surcouf remains one of our most favourite Restaurants, one that checks all the boxes for Food, Service, Atmosphere & Price.
5*****All the Way - Highly recommended!!
Every time that we visit Le Surcouf we are treated to wonderful experience. All the staff are attentive, efficient & courteous - a very professional team. The meal preparation is outstanding & the presentations are beautiful. The wine list is extensive & unique. When we are looking for a special dinner out, are number one choice is Surfouf & they always make the event special.
Decor is very nice. The only reason for the score being only three stars is due to the noisy room. This could easily remedied with some acoustic wall & ceiling treatments.
