About

Paris may be an ocean away, but the art of casual French bistro dining is not lost at Le Pois Penché in the heart of downtown Montréal.

The menu reads like a who’s-who of Parisian comfort food favourites, with beloved classics the likes of steak tartare and duck confit in mustard sauce alongside an array of spectacular seafood platters. Boasting one of the most interesting wine collections in the city, Le Pois Penché offers an impressive selection of imported bottles and wines by the glass.

This authentic French brasserie delivers fine cuisine in simple opulence: plush red velvet, checkerboard floor tile, crystal chandeliers, large paintings and a blackboard listing the daily specials on the wall. In the middle, a large bar; around it, busy waiters flitting to and from, outfitted in the traditional white shirt, black vest and apron. French bistro, through and through.

Le Pois Penché’s terrasse buzzes with animated conversation while its private banquet rooms reserve their splendour for group functions. Le Cellier, in particular, offers a sumptuous venue for events up to 70 guests, with vibrant Parisian settings by artist Pierre Pivet, a vaulted brick ceiling, and the restaurant’s prized wine cellars displayed behind sleek glass panels. Connected to the brasserie, Salon Chez Swann, in the boutique hotel of the same name, is ideal for groups of 24 guests or less.

Great French restaurant! Onion soup, mussels & frites, bouillabaisse, & profiteroles!

On our last night in Montreal last Monday we wanted to experience a really good French restaurant.
?Le Pois Penché delivers everything you want from an authentic French brasserie: a warm ambiance, rich comforting classics, & top-tier hospitality.
?We kicked off our meal with the escargots & the French onion soup. The escargots were rich & fragrant with garlic & butter, while the soup was deeply savory, capped with a perfectly broiled, bubbly blanket of Gruyère. For our main, the duck confit was cooked to perfection-crispy skin on the outside, incredibly tender & succulent on the inside. A glass of Côtes du Rhône brought the whole meal together, cutting through the richness of the duck beautifully.
?We finished the evening with the crème brûlée flambée au Grand Marnier-tableside drama with a warm, subtle citrus note cutting through the velvety custard beneath a crackling sugar crust-paired with a smooth decaf oat milk latte.
?A special shoutout to our waiter, Ian, who made the evening truly memorable. His attentiveness, warmth, & excellent timing elevated the entire dining experience. We will definitely be returning!

The french onion soup was delicious & hearty, & all the seafood in the bouillabaisse melted in my mouth, it was so well cooked. My only slight complaint is that the flat water was room temperature. It would have been nice to be cold or at least served with ice cubes.

Service was excellent!!

Pleasant French bistro with elegant design & good food
The service is excellent. Hugo, the maitre'd is great. Guillome is very pleasant & knowledgeable
One weak point: the sparkling water.
One of the two types of sparkling water is just ok (aéras) , the other one is truly poor.
The restaurant should go back to San Pellegrino

Emma was amazing! Her recommendations for these two Americans wanting an authentic French gustatory experience were spot on! I was reticent to try duck, having been disappointed when I tried it in America, only to find the dish bursting with flavor! Her wine pairing recommendations completed the experience! We went for dinner but found, at Emma's table, we were in for one our favorite all time dining experiences! It rivaled tasting menus we have had! If you get the chance, eat here & ask for Emma!

✨ Le Pois Penché - A Lunch That Felt Like a Gift

After a morning immersed in the Musée des beaux?arts de Montréal, stepping into Le Pois Penché felt like the perfect transition back into the rhythm of the city. The restaurant's location - just a short walk from the museum - makes it an ideal stop in one of downtown Montreal's most beautiful pockets.

🌟 Service That Actually Sees You

From the moment I sat down, the service distinguished itself. The waiter introduced himself briefly at the start, & when I was leaving, he still remembered my name. That small gesture made the experience feel personal rather than transactional. Throughout the meal, the service was warm, attentive, & quietly precise - the kind of hospitality that doesn't need to announce itself to be felt.

🐟 A Dish Remade With Care

I ordered the Atlantic salmon (saumon de l'Atlantique). It arrived more rare than I prefer, & I ate about half before the waiter came by to clear the plate. When I mentioned it was a bit too rare for me, he didn't hesitate - he offered to redo it immediately. The kitchen didn't simply adjust the doneness; they remade & replated the entire dish.

It didn't feel like a correction. It felt like receiving a second full meal, prepared with the same care as the first. That level of thoughtfulness left a lasting impression.

🌆 Atmosphere That Transports You

Le Pois Penché leans heavily into seafood, & both the patio & interior reflect a classic French brasserie spirit. The patio, especially, feels like a slice of Paris tucked into Montreal - elegant, lively, & unmistakably European. Indoors, the dining room is refined without being stiff.

⭐ A Memorable Lunch Worth Repeating

The combination of attentive service, genuine hospitality, & a welcoming atmosphere made this lunch exceptional. It's the kind of place where details matter, & where you feel taken care of from start to finish. I would return without hesitation & recommend it wholeheartedly.

Went there on a Monday night. Reservation highly recommended. We ordered a few dishes. Quebec cheese plate which has varieties of soft & hard cheese from Quebec. French onion soup is a little too salty but taste is good. Lastly, we have a NY rib steak which is cooked to perfect as we asked. Comes with fries & it's really good. A good options for drinks. Our server is friendly & helpful. Good vibe & closed to the downtown hotels. I would recommend.

Great French food in the heart of Montreal.

Well prepared food, simple & classic dishes made with quality ingredients. Ee had the halibut & NY prime steak. We ate at the bar which was very comfortable indeed, chairs & height all top. Service is impeccable, old school french style, very friendly & welcoming. Two minor points are 1) the music is not fit for this kind of high quality bistro place. Play jazz or Charles Aznavour etc. & 2) 12 dollars with the tip approx 14-15 dollars for a mini salad ? Ça va pas ! Prices have gone up big time in Montréal & there is a point where customers will say stop, 12 dollars for a mini salad is one such moment that can not be justified. Having said that we will be back for sure.
