Le Pois Penché - recent news.

About us

Paris may be an ocean away, but the art of casual French bistro dining is not lost at Le Pois Penché in the heart of downtown Montréal.

The menu reads like a who’s-who of Parisian comfort food favourites, with beloved classics the likes of steak tartare and duck confit in mustard sauce alongside an array of spectacular seafood platters. Boasting one of the most interesting wine collections in the city, Le Pois Penché offers an impressive selection of imported bottles and wines by the glass.

This authentic French brasserie delivers fine cuisine in simple opulence: plush red velvet, checkerboard floor tile, crystal chandeliers, large paintings and a blackboard listing the daily specials on the wall. In the middle, a large bar; around it, busy waiters flitting to and from, outfitted in the traditional white shirt, black vest and apron. French bistro, through and through.

Le Pois Penché’s terrasse buzzes with animated conversation while its private banquet rooms reserve their splendour for group functions. Le Cellier, in particular, offers a sumptuous venue for events up to 70 guests, with vibrant Parisian settings by artist Pierre Pivet, a vaulted brick ceiling, and the restaurant’s prized wine cellars displayed behind sleek glass panels. Connected to the brasserie, Salon Chez Swann, in the boutique hotel of the same name, is ideal for groups of 24 guests or less.

Review Summary

Le Pois Penché impresses with an elegant yet welcoming brasserie vibe, refined French fare, and a standout wine list that pairs with attentive, warm service to create consistently memorable meals. Guests praise dishes ranging from duck confit, bouillabaisse, and onion soup to escargots and fresh oysters, all prepared with balance and depth, plus desserts like paris-brest and creme brulee that delight. The atmosphere is stylish and cozy, with a lively bar scene and occasional live music that adds charm without overpowering conversation. The staff are repeatedly noted for friendliness, knowledge, and timely, thoughtful recommendations that make guests feel at home, and reservations are often advised for prime seating. The bread, seafood platters, and well curated pairings further elevate the experience. In short, Le Pois Penché is a premier spot for high quality French cuisine, gracious service, and a memorable dining experience in the city.

We were in Montreal for 3 days & ended up coming here twice, it was so great. Stopped in for a martini & Oysters with Julien + Clement one night & we had such a great experience we came back for brunch the next day. Great food, awesome oyster bar selection, & just a fun atmosphere with such friendly staff that we almost came back a third time.

We were quickly seated at the bar despite not having a reservation. The dishes we got were all very good, with the duck confit being a highlight. Friendly & accommodating staff. I would definitely go back!

We randomly entered the place yesterday with my husband & sat at the bar. The food was great & the atmosphere too. The salmon tartare was AMAZING!!!!! The service from Clermont at the bar was THE BEST & one that we hadn't experienced in a very long time. Extremely friendly, social, helpful. Definitely we are coming back!!

Food is good but the service not so much I was there for a business lunch with my clients, & the experience wasn't great at all 😕 Our server, Mr. Dragan wasn't professional at all. I asked for a Perrier water, & he said we don't have. Asked for some soda water from the bar instead, he said they don't have. I reminded him that there is always soda water at the bar he repeated there is not. When I insisted, he went & got it. My wife ordered a salad, which she never got before the meal. Once our meal was served, I asked for some peppercorn sauce he told me there was none. I was surprised & told him, "What do you mean you don't have? His answer was there is, but it will take 10 minutes to get it. I was surprised again & gave him a look. 2 minutes later, he showed up with the sauce 🤷 I guess he wasn't having a good day...

DO NOT SIT AT THE BAR. If you do, you have the chance of being seated near a male customer who will not take "no" for an answer. He is apparently a daily regular & the staff seem to tolerate him well, but I ended up being cornered in a very awkward conversation. When he started saying racist things about his Mexican-American in-laws, I begged for the bill & left behind an expensive glass of wine & half-eaten dinner. The food was very fine, but my memory of this place will always be how uncomfortable I was made to feel while I was there.

As we arrived in Montreal, some places didn't allow us to get a seat with the child because they got a business or alcohol permit as a bar but actually run as a restaurant.
This place welcomed us even though we didn't have a formal dress.
Raw bar looked amazing. Live music was fantastic. People sang shangsongs all together. Ordered chef's day special grilled fish, the manager came with a cart that has grilled fish on, then got us all the meats from the bones.
This place was the best place I ever visited in Montreal rather than tourist hot spots.
Made us so happy from the long drive.

It was busy, so we sat on the bar (Friday dinner) - definitely recommend you to make a reservation! Duck confitt was amazing! Skin was crispy even when it was soaked with the sauce. Onion soup was great too! I've had some super salty onion soups before, but this one was more like sweeter side. So far the most satisfying restaunrant in Montreal!
