About us

At la Khaїma (nomad tent), at 142 Fairmount in Mile End, we enter into a nomadic world, a journey through colors, flavors and sensations. Once inside, African music accompanied by a rich fragrance emanating from the kitchen complete the multi-sensory experience that transports you to the Sahara. Couples can enjoy an intimate setting while large groups benefit from Moroccan salon comfort, eating from a long, low table.

The founder, of Mauritanian origin, greets guests and his joie-de-vivre warms the atmosphere. The cuisine is African with a nomad touch. Dishes are prepared with local products following the “Slow Food” concept, creating uniquely spiced tajines that offer an unparalleled taste experience. In accordance with the tradition of the desert, guests share large platters tasting all the flavors on offer, with enough to satisfy even the most demanding of appetites.

Come discover La Khaima’s unique refreshing drink made from the hibiscus flower and their mint tea. These marvelous drinks, in addition to mezzes are available by day at Khaїma cafe, 148 Fairmount. It is a meeting
place where you can enjoy comedy nights, music and film screenings. Follow us on Facebook to discover upcoming events.

Review Summary

La Khaïma Cuisine Nomade offers a unique and immersive dining experience that transports guests to a warm, authentic North African setting. Many diners appreciate the communal atmosphere and the traditional, home-style Mauritanian dishes, such as the flavorful couscous, lentil soup, and refreshing hibiscus tea, which are served in generous, shareable portions. The hospitality is frequently highlighted as a standout feature, with the owner and staff often going out of their way to explain the rotating, fixed-menu concept and ensure everyone feels welcome. While the ground-style seating and lack of a traditional menu are central to the nomadic vibe, the restaurant remains a beloved local gem for those seeking an intimate, genuine, and flavorful culinary journey.

For 42 bucks per person you get an excellent North African meal with an array of tagines, soup & hummus, in a very cool colorful atmosphere.

Atigh is such a warm & welcoming host, we loved the whole experience! The vibe & the wall of books has you feel like you're dining in someone's home. My favorite parts of the meal were the lentil soup & the hibiscus mint iced tea.

10/10 beautiful experience!

I love that there wasn't a menu, we didn't know what to expect but the chef came & told us all about what he's making!

The fact that for $35/person you get hibiscus iced tea, mint tea, hummus, soup, & an entire platter is insane. It was plenty

The place is very clean & cozy. You get an awesome experience that makes you feel like you're back home 😊

Saad - you made our day!!! You were so welcoming & explained a lot to us & took pics for us & gave us laughs, & thanks for teaching us all about the place & Mauritania! 🇲🇷 Wishing u all the best!!!

I really can't wait to visit Montreal again so I can come! 😊 🇲🇦 already craving the food I wish we had something like this where I live!

Good food & vibe but 3 main issues:
- owner lied about the price (there's no menu) advertising $32 for us to learn it was actually $38 after we sat. That's petty haggling
- sure benches are authentic but make it VERY uncomfortable to sit with long legs.
- was honestly just too much money for a soup, couscous & tea…
Food was good (coucous a bit dry) & atmosphere is definitely special.

A hidden gem for sure!! My sister has been going here for years & blessed my taste buds by taking me along with her. This is some of the best food I have ever eaten & the service is incredibly friendly. The workers are very prompt & kind, I felt right at home. The beef date stew was UNREAL I'm forever dreaming of it. The starters of hummus & lentil soup with pita were divine. I was so stuffed & cannot wait to come back, this place is a must!!

Très belle découverte! Ambiance & experience vraiment chouette.
Nourriture très bonne. Pas de choix: soupe aux lentilles, humus & pita, tajine & thé à la menthe à volonté pour 40$ par personne.
