About

La Carreta specializes in the preparation of authentic Salvadorian cuisine, featuring pupusas as the cornerstone of the menu. These thick, handmade corn tortillas are stuffed with various combinations of savory ingredients like seasoned pork, refried beans, and melty cheese. The kitchen maintains high standards by pairing these staples with curtido, a vibrant fermented cabbage slaw, and a tangy tomato-based salsa. Beyond the signature pupusas, the menu offers traditional staples such as fried yuca with chicharron and plantains served with crema. The dining atmosphere focuses on functional simplicity, allowing the bold flavors of Central American spices and fresh ingredients to remain the primary attraction. Every plate reflects deep culinary traditions by utilizing time-honored techniques to ensure consistency across every meal served to patrons seeking genuine regional flavors.

La Carreta consistently receives high praise for its authentic and delicious Salvadoran cuisine, with many diners considering their pupusas to be the best in Montreal. Visitors often highlight the flavorful chicharron, refreshing horchata, and generous portions as standout features that keep them coming back. The restaurant offers a welcoming atmosphere, complemented by a lovely outdoor terrace and enjoyable music, making it a popular spot for both casual meals and celebrations. While experiences with service can vary depending on how busy the night is, many patrons appreciate the friendly staff and find the overall quality and fair pricing to be well worth a visit.

I came because it was recommended by a friend but Im highly dissatisfied. The menu looks good but they run out of every ingredient in the drinks menu. No lemon, no beers. We understood & tried to move on, but it was just sad to see the waitress apologizing all the time because of that. They changed my order 4 times bc of lack of ingredients. I'm very patient & understanding with the staff, they were great & it's not their fault to face administration issues. I've been here over an hour & I just got my drink which unbelievably it was not even the spirit I ordered, the it's been over an hour & the food is not on the table yet. Honestly it was so disappointing & a waste of my friends time & mine. I feel bad for the staff that have to put up with this terrible management. I'm never coming back. Don't waste your time, there's a Mexican place less than 100 meters away in the same street & I'm pretty sure they would have been be able to serve you better. I'm not a person who request discount neither paying for my order just because the service was bad, but I should have done that this time. DONT COME UNLESS THE RECENT COMMENTS ARE TRULY POSITIVE

Being Salvadoran, I confirm this is 100% authentic. Food quality is consistently great. Service is really good & prices are fair for the quality you get. Fully recommended!

Delicious pupusas, friendly staff - but expect a wait on busy nights

The restaurant is well located & the staff is very friendly & welcoming. The pupusas & the accompanying salad were absolutely delicious & very reasonably priced.

The downside was the long wait: over 45 to 60 minutes to get a table, & then another 30 to 40 minutes for the food to arrive. This happened on a Friday night, which is understandably one of their busiest times.

To avoid the long wait, I strongly recommend making a reservation through their website in advance.

Despite the wait, the kindness of the staff & the quality of the food made it worth it. Definitely a place I'd go back to without hesitation.

We primarily went to try their pupusas-thick, handmade corn tortillas filled with various delicious ingredients, such as cheese, beans, pork, or loroco (an edible flower bud). Delectable fillings, golden-brown, crispy exteriors that give way to warm, gooey centers bursting with flavor & a symphony of textures & tastes that are both comforting & satisfying. They were served with curtido, a pickled cabbage slaw, & a side of tomato salsa, adding a zesty & tangy contrast to the rich & hearty pupusa. A versatile dish that can be enjoyed as a snack, appetizer, or main course. Whether you're a meat lover, vegetarian, or cheese enthusiast, there's a pupusa filling for everyone to enjoy. We also enjoyed a wonderful tamale, a warming beef soup, some excellent & colourful cocktails, & yes, even a poutine with yucca fries (we had to). A must-try for anyone looking to experience the joy of authentic Central American food. So, if you haven't had the pleasure of trying pupusas yet, we recommend this. You won't be disappointed!
