About

La Carreta specializes in the preparation of authentic Salvadorian cuisine, featuring pupusas as the cornerstone of the menu. These thick, handmade corn tortillas are stuffed with various combinations of savory ingredients like seasoned pork, refried beans, and melty cheese. The kitchen maintains high standards by pairing these staples with curtido, a vibrant fermented cabbage slaw, and a tangy tomato-based salsa. Beyond the signature pupusas, the menu offers traditional staples such as fried yuca with chicharron and plantains served with crema. The dining atmosphere focuses on functional simplicity, allowing the bold flavors of Central American spices and fresh ingredients to remain the primary attraction. Every plate reflects deep culinary traditions by utilizing time-honored techniques to ensure consistency across every meal served to patrons seeking genuine regional flavors.

Review Summary

La Carreta is widely recognized for serving some of the best and most authentic pupusas in Montreal, with many diners praising the high quality and delicious flavors of the food. While the menu consistently receives positive feedback for its traditional Salvadoran dishes and generous portions, the overall customer experience varies significantly due to inconsistent service. Some patrons report friendly, professional, and welcoming interactions, while others have encountered long wait times, occasional errors, or inattentive staff. Despite these mixed reports regarding service and the occasional complaint about restaurant temperature or volume, the majority of visitors find the fair pricing and authentic atmosphere make it a worthy destination for a memorable meal.

Amazing outdoor terrasse weather & atmosphere. You cannot skip the yuca frita (fries like but gluten free fried vegetable), the chicharron (pulled pork fried chewy on the out but tender on the inside). Great size pupusas, go for the revueltas & the con todo you won't regret & the sweet orchata drink (rice floor base with cinnamon) was to delectfully sweet. Great July'w6 experience.

I used to love this place, but it's gone downhill.

Service was complete trash the last two times I went, so not just a one off, & both times the restaurant was near empty, so no excuse.

About 4 wait staff on, all of them chatting together, eating food with their hands, & on their phones. The bar top was full of dirty dishes, empty water bottles & sangria pitchers. Literally not doing their jobs. Had to go ask them for everything (drinks, sauces etc.) as they wouldn't come to the table. They also confused the orders & forgot to bring drinks that then appeared on the bill. Complete joke & a far cry from what it once was.

I used to work in the service industry & this is an embarrassment. I gave them two chances, & it was the same terrible service both times.

The food is decent, but I'm going to frequent the other papusa places in the neighborhood.

Really hope the management turns things around.

This is a cute & cozy little place that I enjoyed for my birthday dinner with a friend. It was very crowded when we arrived & was a tight squeeze for people to get around. I love the pupusa with pork & cheese & the yuca fries. They have really great drinks! I did not like where our table was next to the kitchen & in front of the bar...lots of traffic & felt in the middle of everything. The women's bathroom is falling apart & really needs a major revamp. Bar area is really impressive with the neon lights & set up. Lastly on the website it said that there is a dj on Saturday nights but there wasn't so this was disappointing & one of the reasons I chose to go to this spot. All in all not a bad place if you want to try pupusas.

Excellent pupusas, guacamole & chicken & shrimp with rice; delicious drinks. We've been regulars for ten years & brought many friends to enjoy this gem. The loss of one star was due to a musician on the terrasse who played in front of us, drowning out any ability to hold a conversation, then asked us for money. If I had known this would be the situation, we would have waited until an evening without live (& very close-up) entertainment.
