Review Summary

Hoshi is widely regarded as a hidden gem in Chinatown that offers an authentic and high-quality Japanese dining experience. Patrons consistently praise the pork katsu for being exceptionally tender, juicy, and perfectly crispy, often highlighting it as the standout dish on the menu. The restaurant is noted for its generous portion sizes, flavorful sauces, and beautiful presentation, all provided at reasonable prices. While the space is cozy and limited, which can lead to wait times during peak hours, the service is frequently described as warm, efficient, and exceptionally friendly. Many guests appreciate the thoughtful touches, such as the complimentary soup, and feel that the delicious, homestyle cooking makes the visit well worth the trip.

Service was fantastic! Had a chance to exchange with the staff too. Katsu was excellent! Took me back to Japan! Really enjoyed my meal there! Would recommend

Just ignore the debatable exterior of the restaurant & eat some juicy, tasty, crispy Katsu.

Have gone to Hoshi a few times now, & each time have tried something different, ranging from the Sake Don, Lunch Ten Don, & Katsu Don. Always excellent taste & presentation, particularly the Ten Don with all the nice tempura arrangement. Service is good, however, the only (major) downside of this place is that there are not many seats / tables, & no reservations taken. One time three of us came & waited outside in the cold for 15 minutes or so, having already being reassured by the waitress that it would be soon, but it being winter & all, we finally decided to leave for another restaurant. The food & service are great, & it's definitely worth a visit, but there's no guarantee you'll get a seat when you arrive!

Crispy rosu katsu, warm rice, endless shredded cabbage… & one of those lunches that disappears too fast. Between conversations about American politics, immortality, & the next trip waiting somewhere out there, the pork stayed crispy & the world somehow felt both heavier & lighter at the same time. #Hoshi #Montreal

Overall very disappointing.

Not particularly good or bad service. Wait time outside at the door, would think a reservation list or system would be better as there's no covering outside. Hope to see them implement something like that in the future.

We both ordered two different types of katsu & both were dry & tough. Completely overcooked. Flavor was a bland, granted you are given seasonings like salt, sauce etc... but katsu itself has no flavor.

Both our plates & sauce cup had chips in it.

Soup they served seemed to be the instant cream vegetable one from Korean grocery store.

Overall, it's not very good. I've had much better katsu at food court. They should switch to donkatsu. Less easy to mess up & you can tenderize the meat.
