Holder occupies a sprawling industrial space characterized by high ceilings and exposed brickwork that define its bustling atmosphere. The kitchen focuses on refined French brasserie staples with an emphasis on technical precision. Signature preparations include expertly seasoned hand-cut beef tartare served alongside crisp, golden frites. Mussels arrive in generous portions, steamed in aromatic broths that highlight the natural salinity of the shellfish. Diners navigate an expansive menu that balances traditional techniques with contemporary presentations. Large circular booths and polished woodwork foster an environment conducive to focused consumption of classic culinary favorites. This establishment maintains a consistent reputation for delivering robust, flavorful plates that remain grounded in the core principles of European culinary traditions through careful ingredient selection and diligent, systematic kitchen execution.
Holder is widely regarded as a staple in Old Montreal, offering a classic French brasserie experience that frequently delights visitors and locals alike. Many guests praise the authentic menu, highlighting standouts such as the beef cheeks, duck confit, beef tartare, and mussels, often paired with an extensive wine list. While the atmosphere is consistently described as lively, bustling, and stylish, some diners find the dining room can become quite energetic and noisy, which may not suit those seeking a quiet or intimate environment. Service is a frequent highlight, with many reviews commending the professional, attentive, and welcoming nature of the staff, although a small number of patrons have noted inconsistent experiences with both service pacing and food quality. Overall, the restaurant is frequently recommended for its generous portions, great value, and warm hospitality, making it a reliable destination for group dinners, business lunches, and special occasions.
Since moving to Quebec I have enjoyed many meals in Montreal & tonight I enjoyed the best dish yet! Chef elevated shepherd's pie into a gastronomical masterpiece.
Had dinner with friends here. Ordered several cocktails & they were great! Had the beef cheeks with mash potatoes, very tender & flavourful. Mussels & fries were decent. French onion soup is a must have along with the calamari! Friendly service & ambience!
What an absolute gem of a spot. The service was impeccable, the food was very delicious, & the price I found reasonable. I will definitely be returning to this place on future trips to Montreal.

Service was spectacular, even with two different servers they were both friendly & accommodating.
I ordered the fish & chips, & they were solid. Had the'Kermit' drink & it was delicious!
Shared a table with several coworkers & my wife, & we could all hear each other without having to shout. Overall the atmosphere was warm & didn't feel crowded even with the place being packed.
The French onion soup was delicious. For the appetizer, we had the salmon tartare-it was very fresh & refreshing.
For my main, I ordered a steak medium rare, but it came a bit too rare. That said, the steak itself was flavorful, with a nicely seared, crispy exterior. The cut was thick, & paired with the salad, the portion was just right for me. My partner ordered the duck confit-it was tender, flavorful, & not gamey at all, making it very easy to enjoy.
We were too full to try dessert. The staff were friendly & the service was great.
