Holder occupies a sprawling industrial space characterized by high ceilings and exposed brickwork that define its bustling atmosphere. The kitchen focuses on refined French brasserie staples with an emphasis on technical precision. Signature preparations include expertly seasoned hand-cut beef tartare served alongside crisp, golden frites. Mussels arrive in generous portions, steamed in aromatic broths that highlight the natural salinity of the shellfish. Diners navigate an expansive menu that balances traditional techniques with contemporary presentations. Large circular booths and polished woodwork foster an environment conducive to focused consumption of classic culinary favorites. This establishment maintains a consistent reputation for delivering robust, flavorful plates that remain grounded in the core principles of European culinary traditions through careful ingredient selection and diligent, systematic kitchen execution.
Holder is widely regarded as a staple in Old Montreal, offering a classic French brasserie experience that frequently delights visitors and locals alike. Many guests praise the authentic menu, highlighting standouts such as the beef cheeks, duck confit, beef tartare, and mussels, often paired with an extensive wine list. While the atmosphere is consistently described as lively, bustling, and stylish, some diners find the dining room can become quite energetic and noisy, which may not suit those seeking a quiet or intimate environment. Service is a frequent highlight, with many reviews commending the professional, attentive, and welcoming nature of the staff, although a small number of patrons have noted inconsistent experiences with both service pacing and food quality. Overall, the restaurant is frequently recommended for its generous portions, great value, and warm hospitality, making it a reliable destination for group dinners, business lunches, and special occasions.
If I could give this restaurant more than five stars, I would. Our waiter was very informative about the gluten-free options & made sure that the appetizers that my non-celiac boyfriend ordered were gluten free so that I could try them! Never thought I'd try beef tartare in my life, but when the dish came out with [very tasty] gluten-free crackers I simply had to - it was delicious. My shrimp entrée was amazing. Because there was a dedicated gluten-free fryer, I had to try the French fries too… they were perfectly crispy. Stellar service & good overall. Holder is a must-go for celiacs in Montreal!
Beautiful restaurant set inside a classic building in Old Montreal. Loved the historic styling & the magnificent bar! The atmosphere is bustling & lively, making it great for a group dinner or a night out. The food was steaming hot & delicious-the beef cheeks & French onion soup are definitely the highlights. Service was exceptional, very attentive, & welcoming. Because it's a popular spot in the city, the dining room can get quite energetic & a bit loud, so it might not be ideal for an intimate, quiet date. Highly recommend making a reservation in advanc
Holder was an outstanding dining experience. The food felt authentically French. We ordered the hanger steak with shallots which was delicious, & the confit de canard was incredible, served on a bed of fresh arugula. The restaurant was also very child-friendly as they offered a booster seat for our baby & even rearranged tables to accommodate our stroller.
They have an excellent selection of wines, beers, & cocktails. What truly stood out, though, was the staff. We were greeted in both French & English, & the service was exceptionally attentive & kind throughout the meal. Our water glasses were constantly refilled, & every interaction felt warm & welcoming.
Easily some of the best restaurant service we've experienced in a long time!

Great place to go with coworkers, friends, or even family. It has pleasant vibe, & the French-inspired food was absolutely delicious. The atmosphere can get a bit noisy at times since there are often large groups, but it still feels lively & fun. The flavor of the dishes really stands out, & the service was consistently attentive & friendly throughout our visit. 🍽?✨
Had dinner with friends here. Ordered several cocktails & they were great! Had the beef cheeks with mash potatoes, very tender & flavourful. Mussels & fries were decent. French onion soup is a must have along with the calamari! Friendly service & ambience!
The French onion soup was delicious. For the appetizer, we had the salmon tartare-it was very fresh & refreshing.
For my main, I ordered a steak medium rare, but it came a bit too rare. That said, the steak itself was flavorful, with a nicely seared, crispy exterior. The cut was thick, & paired with the salad, the portion was just right for me. My partner ordered the duck confit-it was tender, flavorful, & not gamey at all, making it very easy to enjoy.
We were too full to try dessert. The staff were friendly & the service was great.
Decided to lunch here after reading the reviews.
Staff were both friendly, pleasant & helpful. Great ambience & well appointed.
My wife ordered the French onion soup & the beef tatare (her favourite) for the entrée. I had the warm goat cheese & beef cheek for the entrée.
My order was fabulous. Loved it. My wife was a wee bit disappointed with hers. The soup was below average & her beef tartare was average fare.
We'll try Vallier tomorrow as we're here for a few days.
