Holder occupies a sprawling industrial space characterized by high ceilings and exposed brickwork that define its bustling atmosphere. The kitchen focuses on refined French brasserie staples with an emphasis on technical precision. Signature preparations include expertly seasoned hand-cut beef tartare served alongside crisp, golden frites. Mussels arrive in generous portions, steamed in aromatic broths that highlight the natural salinity of the shellfish. Diners navigate an expansive menu that balances traditional techniques with contemporary presentations. Large circular booths and polished woodwork foster an environment conducive to focused consumption of classic culinary favorites. This establishment maintains a consistent reputation for delivering robust, flavorful plates that remain grounded in the core principles of European culinary traditions through careful ingredient selection and diligent, systematic kitchen execution.
Holder is widely regarded as a staple in Old Montreal, offering a classic French brasserie experience that frequently delights visitors and locals alike. Many guests praise the authentic menu, highlighting standouts such as the beef cheeks, duck confit, beef tartare, and mussels, often paired with an extensive wine list. While the atmosphere is consistently described as lively, bustling, and stylish, some diners find the dining room can become quite energetic and noisy, which may not suit those seeking a quiet or intimate environment. Service is a frequent highlight, with many reviews commending the professional, attentive, and welcoming nature of the staff, although a small number of patrons have noted inconsistent experiences with both service pacing and food quality. Overall, the restaurant is frequently recommended for its generous portions, great value, and warm hospitality, making it a reliable destination for group dinners, business lunches, and special occasions.
My friends & I were visiting Montreal & Holder is one of the recommended restaurants to try. It's a fancier restaurant among others we tried, but the ambience is comfortable enough to enjoy time together. Our server Joe was the best. He's very attentive & very pleasant. The food is perfect. We started our meal with octopus salad & calamari. I had the grilled salmon which was set on a bed of pureed potato. & the lemon sauce that went with it was divine! I'm never a big fan of mashed potatoes but this particular meal changed my mind. My friends were also raving about their meals. They had the veal, gnocchi & lobster ravioli. I couldn't help it so before we left, I asked Joe to give our compliments to the chef. I don't usually do that but I'm really happy with my meal. Hats off to you, chef! & to Joe for being such a great server.
Great ambiance. Fantastic service. Delicious food. I remembered to take anouc of my meal but the Lemon mascarpone dessert barely touched the table before I attacked it. Omg so good!

Beautiful restaurant set inside a classic building in Old Montreal. Loved the historic styling & the magnificent bar! The atmosphere is bustling & lively, making it great for a group dinner or a night out. The food was steaming hot & delicious-the beef cheeks & French onion soup are definitely the highlights. Service was exceptional, very attentive, & welcoming. Because it's a popular spot in the city, the dining room can get quite energetic & a bit loud, so it might not be ideal for an intimate, quiet date. Highly recommend making a reservation in advanc
All of our hanger steaks were overdone. If you want medium ask for medium-rare. mussels were overcooked. Salads were standard. fries were good. gazpacho was not that good either.
Holder was an outstanding dining experience. The food felt authentically French. We ordered the hanger steak with shallots which was delicious, & the confit de canard was incredible, served on a bed of fresh arugula. The restaurant was also very child-friendly as they offered a booster seat for our baby & even rearranged tables to accommodate our stroller.
They have an excellent selection of wines, beers, & cocktails. What truly stood out, though, was the staff. We were greeted in both French & English, & the service was exceptionally attentive & kind throughout the meal. Our water glasses were constantly refilled, & every interaction felt warm & welcoming.
Easily some of the best restaurant service we've experienced in a long time!
We had a great experience at Holder. It was very busy when we went & a bit loud but we could still have an easy conversation at our table of two.
The gazpacho was very good while the calamari was not our favorite. It was a bit rubbery. For entrees we had the beef cheek & the mussels. Both were very good, although some of the mussels were a bit gritty. I preferred the beef cheek.
For dessert we had the chocolat crémeux & the sorbet trio. The chocolate was one of the best desserts I've ever had. The sorbet was extremely tart.
The service was excellent & very professional. Overall, we had a great time & enjoyed our food.
