What does it mean when a restaurant elicits enough emotion to write a public review? It may mean it was life-changing, like our visit to Garde Manger last week. I know that sounds dramatic, but I finally understand true culinary art.
Each mouthful seemed to be the best thing I've ever eaten, only to be replaced by the next best bite. The deliciousness made me pause & forced me to live in the moment, trying to savor each flavor.
& it wasn't just the food. My husband chose Garde Manger to celebrate our anniversary. After strolling the streets of Old Montreal, we arrived at the restaurant, the outside so unassuming we had to check the address. We opened the door to warm sounds of murmured conversation & light music. We were greeted by David, who was just the first person of the many we encountered who made us feel like we were the evening's VIPs. I realize, of course, that each & every other guest must have felt the same way.
Time flew as Nicholas & his team took such care of us for our relaxed 2.5h dinner. Water glasses seemed to magicaly refill. Nicholas's wine suggestions were spot on. Hindsight delivered zero regrets in splurging for the chef's multi-course seasonal meal. We're so very glad we could experience every month-watering morsel, from the scallop & caviar amuse bouche through dessert. Seriously, I could list each thing we ate & rave.
The pause before the dessert course was a glow of satiation, & then...& Then! They played our wedding song as they brought out our desserts! I was brought to tears. Just - WOW!
It is a night we'll never ever forget; an experience we'll talk about for years to come. My husband, a foodie, is worried he's now set the bar too high for our future anniversaries ;-). He walked back to the kitchen to compliment the chefs. What a magnificent adventure! I wish you all could have tasted the chefs' beautiful art that night. You only live once - add Garde Manger to your list. We absolutely look forward to our next trip to this splendid restaurant!
Absolutely fantastic energy, service, food & ambiance!
We enjoyed cocktails then the premier tasting menu & wine pairing. The kitchen impresses with food & presentation. We loved our special celebration there & will be back. Definitely save your money before going!
Dont' go there if only you want to pay high price for miniscure bad food & put up with the restaurant's snoody attitude. We paied $540 for a set menu. They didn't have any cracker or bread to go with the appetizer seadfood dip. The exuse was it was a F-1 race weekend, they didn't have bread or crackers. Every so-called course was a lump of goo about one inch in diamiter, very salty, you wouldn't know what you were eating. No silverware was really required to eat the food, use two fingers to pick up each'course' up & pop it into your mouth was the best way. The wine pour was more fit for a small shot glass. Afterthree courses of you-literarilly- need-a-magnifying-glass-to-find it food, we couldn't endure the ordeal anymore, we walked out but still paid the full price.
The restaurant was situated in what looked like a dirty, dilapitated building. There was no sign to indicate we had arrived at the restuarant. For about five minutes, neither us nor the Uber driver were sure we'd arrived at the right address. Inside, it was dark, loud music playing, with servers constantly hovering over you to explain what was in those mystery lumps they called food, or see if you finished so they could clear the hardly used silverware & wiping the table for crumbs that's not really there.
It was not a dining experience, not a bad dining experience, it was the most horrifying dining nightmare.
Highly recommend Menu Du Chef. An amazing 7 course & dessert dining experience. The seafood preparation was incredible, with every course a delight! The wine pairing married so well. It is a seafood focused restaurant but the hanger steak... also perfection. Truly an unforgettable meal! Very much appreciated the service staff -an equally huge part of this review. Thank you!
I heard that i should pass on this restaurant as it was old & mediocre but they couldn't have been more wrong. I would say this should ranked as high or higher than Joe Beef for the must do restaurant in Ottawa. The food was next level, as was the service. Great pairings of wine with every course were on point & the ambience was amazing. I will not visit Montreal without visiting Garde Manger from here on out.
Food is good.
Wine overpriced.
Service.... Not really there.
Wowww. Get to the Gibby's for less.
Don't recommend. Spent more than 1000$ with a group of 4.
One of the most memorable seafood meals I've ever had. You know a restaurant is amazing when they can make a carrot so flavourful & interesting you savour it as slowly & carefully as every other bite. Our server was fabulous & brought us perfect wine pairings for our courses. The cheerful person bussing our table was delighted to see that I had scraped up all the horseradish on my cocktail sauce which she proudly shared she had prepared for the prawns, which in itself was amazing--super thick, rich & tomatoey. It was a pleasure seeing staff taking pride in even the little details. Presentation for every dish was beautiful! I loved the clams on rocks! Every bite of each course had so much flavour, I had to lick the plate when no one was looking. We had the lowest tier chef's tasting menu, which included a seafood platter, clams, tuna, beets 4 ways, swordfish, turbot, the carrots, & two kinds of desserts. I only wish I lived here, I could come back on the regular! Thank you for a spectacular meal!
I only gave 4 stars for ambiance because it was maybe not my favourite choice of music playing a little too loudly in the background, though I guess it was probably the vibe they were going for.
This was legitimately one of the best meals that both me & my fiancée had ever had. It sounds like an exaggeration but it was true. Both of us agreed that we had never truly understood how a dish could be'perfectly balanced' until this meal. We had the chef's menu (second tier) & every dish was delicious & was plenty of food (I am a hungry man & often find'fancy' restaurant meals don't satisfy me but this was certainly not the case). We went to another nice restaurant the following night & it was good, but could not be compared to this meal. All of the service staff were also incredibly kind & attentive, & were accommodating of my fiancée's gluten allergy. Our drinks (beer, wine, & cocktails) were all exceptional as well. A dinner we will not forget!
Has been excellent for a decade. Top notch food, wine, service, atmosphere in Old Montreal.
We upgraded to the most expensive tasting menu & the experience was confusing. We upgraded because we wanted more lobster. I'm not certain that's what we got. Our waiter seemed unable to clearly explain what the tasting menu included & whether there was any flexibility in asking for certain dishes. As courses came out, we were confused about how many appetizers & entrees there were. It would've been helpful to have something printed so we knew what to expect. We were disappointed with the wines by the glass selections, especially with respect to the white wines. The white wines we tasted were very dry. There did not seem to be any options for something off dry or fruity. The constant filling of our water glasses (after every sip) was off putting. It interrupted our conversations & created a disconnect during the meal. The food was outstanding.
