Review Summary

Opinions of Duc de Lorraine describe a refined Parisian vibe with an impressive array of pastries and desserts that many reviewers call among the best in Montreal, from oversized croissants to intricate trompe l'oeil creations and a tarte au citron that draws rave comments. The bakery and cafe blend an elegant, cozy atmosphere near Oratoire Saint Joseph with consistently attentive, friendly service that makes guests feel welcome whether celebrating a birthday, enjoying a luxurious brunch, or stopping in for pastry and coffee. The food and desserts are praised for quality and presentation, and the overall experience is often described as charming, polished, and memorable, with a sense that the place truly delivers on its reputation. While prices are frequently noted as high and some guests mention long waits or moments of uneven service, many reviewers feel the combination of flavor, artistry, and service justifies the cost and invites return visits for special occasions or a refined treat.

I just returned from my long weekend trip to Montreal & am back home in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario & I am compelled to write this review & send a Special Thank you to "Mo" (Mahomet), my wonderful server at the Fabulous Duc De Lorraine!!!! I spent my mornings being pampered at this delightful Bistro with an amazing array of scrumptious pastries, sandwiches & beverages. As a Guest, you can choose to dine inside the Bistro or outside on the patio which offered scenic views of the Observatoire & a small park lined with tables & chairs along side the Parkway under the shade of the trees. I choose the patio & indulged in a Flat Croissant & on another occassion, the Mille-Feuille creme patissiere & also treated myself to the Croque-Monsieur sandwich complimented with a side salad which was a match made in heaven! All while I enjoyed sipping on a Cappuccino & also sampled the Cafe Latte. Unfortunately, my spoken French is not at the level I would like it to be, but the staff were accomodating & "Mo", heightened my overall experience with his genuine kindness, care, thoughtful suggestions & welcoming sense of humor! I have already made plans to return to Montreal in the next month just so I can revisit the menu at Duc De Lorraine, which I am confident will not disappoint!!!!! Merci Beaucoup mes Amies! Until next time.............

Nice counter with tons of options even later in the day. Pastries were okay. They are priced on the higher end of the scale & there are a lot of better French pastries in Montreal that are also cheaper.

The best French Cafe/Restaurant I've been to in my 10 years living in Montreal. We had the Onion soup, St-Paul Benedictine & Crepes & it was fantastic. The atmosphere of traditional French music & great service brought me back to times of sitting in Paris, with a quality of food that is normally lacking in Canada.

The food presentation more like a truck stop diner... not in line with the sophisticated fine pastries & French ambiance... time for the chef / owners to revisit a French bistro in Paris !

I found this place on Google maps as I was looking for somewhere close to my hotel to have breakfast. I was really impressed by the quality of the food & the amazing service I received. My server was Titouan & he was attentive & made me feel right at home speaking in English, Spanish & French. Portion sizes are huge so if you come alone like me please don't order too much haha

Brings back childhood memories. This place has been opened since I was a kid & remains an authentic French bakery with a very cute restaurant. The staff were very accommodating & it is located on a quiet little street. Almost feels like you're i

I am a regular here & have tried most of the more substantial pastries on the menu. Coffee is amazing too. It's small but very comfy. Not a place to go when you are watching calories. My favourites: the almond croissant (heart attack on a plate), the Duc de Lorraine pizza, the tart with fruits, & the collection of its cheeses. Don't forget to pick up a delicious loaf of French style bread to take home with you!

I am a French food snob & am often disappointed with the Montreals' French restaurants & bakeries. I was happily surprised to find Duc De Lorraine to have croissants & pain au chocolates that rival the patisseries en France. I am very excited about this new find in the neighborhood & will certainly be back. C'est formidable.

An amazingly tasty croissant with almonds. I would say this is the tastiest one that I have tried in Montreal & very close to Parisian one... Lattes are well done & fresh & rejuvenating which you can't say about other places. In addition the décor & design, & overall ambience is simply great & on the top of everything you may want from a French pastry. Nice outdoor sitting...

WOW!!! I got to say that this is the bakery I will for sure go & get my cakes. I just bought a birthday cake for my dad & honestly everybody at the party loved it. The cake was like heaven in your mouth aka that is a good cake. When I was going to the bakery to check out some cakes & flavors, employees were so nice & patience & helping me out with cakes size & flavors which I like that.

It took me a while to discover it. I also travel to Paris twice a year, which is responsible for my refusal to eat pastries or bread that aren't close to the perfection found there. So, I do know the difference between frozen cardboard filled with chemicals from the really fine stuff.

This bakery is the real deal, & has been my choice for the last couple of years or so, from the time it was owned by the previous owners to the last visit when I indulged in that birthday cake so deliciously described in a previously.

Croissants! Good? No. Great? YES. Crisp, delicate, impossible to eat in the car as it explodes into those flakes that are the mark of really good croissants.

The pates are wonderful, too wonderful! The cakes are tres francais. Light cakes filled with fresh fruit fillings or wonderful, not too sweet chocolate or hazelnut mousse, etc. The frosting, again, is in the French tradition of not being sweet, heavy buttercream (although there's nothing wrong with that!) but instead has a whipped cream/sugar texture that is much lighter. & they are GORGEOUS! I'm always proud to bring something from this bakery to any gathering.
