Duc de Lorraine is widely recognized for its beautiful Parisian atmosphere and an impressive selection of high quality pastries, cakes, and croissants that many visitors find visually stunning and delicious. While the ambiance and sweet treats are often described as a highlight of the experience, opinions regarding the savory menu and service levels vary, with some guests praising the attentive, professional staff and others noting inconsistencies in wait times or portion sizes. Although the pricing is frequently mentioned as being on the higher end, many patrons view the location as a lovely spot for special occasions, elegant brunches, or a memorable visit while exploring the area near the oratory.
I just used Duc du Lorraine & it was my very first time for my daughters graduation, I asked them to make a custom cake & oh man, tasted so good, the quality of the ingredients, they made the cake exactly the way I wanted, their service, their help, honestly if you are looking for an amazing excellent quality cakes, this is your place. Thank you so much Duc De Lorraine for making my daughter's day special. They are the best!
I've been here multiple times, & every time I buy bread or individual cakes, everything is simply thrown into the same bag without any separation or support. By the time I get home, cream has been smeared everywhere, fillings have leaked out, & the cakes have shifted around & lost their shape.
What frustrated me most was the packaging for a large cake. I specifically told the staff that the cake was intended as a gift. They informed me that they did not have a box tall enough for the cake. Instead, they placed several small boxes around it, leaving the top completely uncovered, then wrapped the whole thing in a paper bag & expected me to carry it carefully myself.
Honestly, if you don't have packaging that fits the product, the burden shouldn't be placed entirely on the customer. It makes no sense to sell cakes of this height without having proper cake boxes available. Having to carry a partially exposed cake home-or to give as a gift-is simply unacceptable.
The products themselves are good, but the packaging standards are nowhere near the same level. The food is enjoyable; the takeout experience is a disaster.
I have been going to this place for over 20 years for various things such as cakes, pastries, breakfast, & even Mother's Day brunches with my mother. Unfortunately, my most recent experience was very disappointing.
Without any notice, after ordering a $60 plate consisting of a bagel & lobster eggs Benedict, I realized it no longer came with potatoes or fruit, which used to be included as part of the full arrangement. The portion & overall presentation were not what I expected for the price paid.
On top of that, the service was not pleasant & did not reflect the quality of experiences I had in the past. Something has definitely changed over the years.
Be aware - it is very expensive for what you receive.

I saw this place recommended on social media, but the taste was honestly disappointing. The mango cake's cream was far too watery-almost like liquid. The other cake was better, though. That said, the staff were very friendly & the service was great.
Duc de Lorraine is a true gem in Montreal's culinary landscape, a classic French bakery & patisserie that consistently delivers exceptional baked goods.
Atmosphere:
The bakery has an elegant, timeless feel that transports you straight to a Parisian patisserie. Display cases are beautifully arranged with an array of tempting pastries, cakes, & breads. The space is clean, bright, & inviting.
Food:
This is where Duc de Lorraine absolutely shines. The croissants are incredible-perfectly laminated with a golden, flaky exterior & a tender, buttery interior. They are everything a classic French croissant should be.
The cruffins are a standout, taking the croissant concept to another level. They are beautifully baked with a caramelized exterior & soft, layered interior, offering the perfect balance of buttery richness & subtle sweetness.
Beyond these highlights, the entire selection of pastries is exceptional. Each item is crafted with obvious skill & high quality ingredients. Every bite delivers the authentic taste of French patisserie.
Verdict:

service & coffee top notch but the pastries were lower than expected
they were sweeter than expected not every thing looked fresh! the cake wasn't as sweet & tasted good.
The pastries themselves are amazing (I've tried the chocolatines + various small cakes & treats) & I can see why the specialty & artistic pieces are priced so high, however the baked good staples of croissants/chocolatines/basic cakes, etc are NOT worth the high price tag this place charges. I would only say these are worth it as a nice gift to others, or if you get them on a discount such as through Too Good to Go.
So friends, I spent my 6th year anniversary here with my fiancé & it was wonderful. Music & vibes were elegant & I loved every second of it.
The tromple d'oeil was phenomenal & delicious. I got to try the cacao & the mango along with the Ferrero rocher cake. They were fresh & delicious. Just another note, one of the patisserie was sprinkled with silver flakes & I loved that little touch.
