Dic Ann's Hamburgers Montreal Restaurant: Menu, Reviews & Reserve (2026)
BurgersPoutine
Dominic "Dick" Potenza was born in West Virginia and grew up in Utica, New York. He became well known in the Rochester - Buffalo area during the 40’s as a head-waiter in the supper-club type restaurants of the era. It was at one of these supper-clubs that he met his future wife, jazz accordionist Ann Collecchia, who performed using the stage name of Ann Russell. Together, they envisioned a fast food restaurant that would serve an original style hamburger with their own special sauce. After much thought, this original style hamburger took the form of a toasted bun containing a thin patty that would cook quickly. After they modified and combined two recipes that they brought with them from Rochester, Dick and Ann developed their famous hot sauce.

Review Summary

Dic Ann's Hamburgers is described across reviews as a nostalgic, no-frills spot that serves simple, well-made burgers with fresh ingredients and a flavor that feels authentic and timeless. The atmosphere is repeatedly called a classic diner vibe, with a time-honored approach that fans say still stands out amid fast food trends, and the burgers are frequently labeled some of the best in Montreal. Fries are often highlighted as a great accompaniment, while poutine quality varies and can be hit or miss. The original location is noted for being clean and well kept, with limited seating that makes it feel like a dine-in or takeout favorite. Some comments mention service at the counter as not perfect and note concerns about franchising and training, though the core product and the iconic burger experience remain the main draw.

You go there for the burgers & sauce.
Fries not cooked enough for my taste.

But super nice staff.

Christmas came early this year my friends. Crossing the PIE-IX bridge heading straight to Chez Matante - a greater power took over & pulled me into to the Dic Ann's parking lot. When I walked in, there he stood behind the grill, Santa Claus himself the last disciple of the great Mr. Dominic Potenza. A man with 44 years of Dic Ann's experience manning the that holy grill, his name escapes me but his face is imprinted in my mind since I was 18 years old (do the math). He stood side by side with Dic & became a master himself. That is not a line - its unreal the quality this man serves out.

The best cheeseburgers ever, cheese dog on the side, Pepsi, Fries & then the ultimate Dic Ann's order came calling out of my voice'Repeat !' - I had tears in my eyes.

Now I know his time is limited - It would be a great move if the Franchise Group made him the corporate chef & let him teach all those new cooks how to do it right at the original restaurant.

I can testify that many franchises need his help. You can not pull some young lad off the street & hand him the spatula & expect anything great to happen - they all need training. The product excellence must live on.

It's a classic place that has been there for a very long time! There is not much place to seat at since it's a more dine in seat table style'sur comptoir' or for to go! My friends usually order for to go since highschool but today we tried to eat dine in & it was very chill overall !

We enjoy our time today ✨?

Best burger I've have in ages. The fries were amazing, too. &, to top it all off, I didn't have to pay an arm & a leg for it. A double cheeseburger with fries & a drink costs like 13.50

Ordered after hearing & reading good reviews. The burgers were amazing. The poutine, on the other hand, was really bad. The fries felt like frozen fries that weren't cooked enough, no gravy (instead some weird spicy red "sauce") & no cheese curds.

This place just oozes nostalgia. It's a nothing place really. But it's their kosher beef hamburgers as thin as a pancake with burger buns squished as thin as a pancake or less, piles with minced onions & their special sauce. I can't explain it just tastes soooo good. & the pricing is totally not worth it at all. But it's so unique & tasty so I go & get my fill once in a blue moon & pay too much money for a baby sized burger lol. Their fries are like match sticks & I don't like them as the also don't retain heat well & by the time you get them to the table they are nearly room temp. Service is nothing to talk about as it's good. But all in all every location is consistent & awesome.

Love this place, location, staff, service & authentic burgers. Thin smash burger type with a unique sauce. Hotdogs are quite good too, prepared quite different from the usual steamed style & on toasted buns. Thin crispy french fries too.
