Review Summary

Cinéma Moderne is widely regarded as a charming, intimate destination for film lovers in Montreal, offering a curated selection of repertory and independent movies in a cozy, aesthetically pleasing setting. Many patrons praise the personalized experience, including brief, insightful film introductions and the convenience of having an on-site café and bar that serves drinks and snacks. While the atmosphere, cleanliness, and friendly staff contribute to a positive experience, common criticisms include the high price point for refreshments, rigid ticket policies that prevent exchanges or refunds, and discomfort caused by the current theater seating. Despite these drawbacks, the venue is frequently celebrated as a unique neighborhood gem that provides a respectful, distraction-free environment for enjoying classic and niche cinema.

A small yet chill cafe, the cinema is small but they play old & classic movies.

Washed the Classics cinema over a year in the old school manner & had a wonderful time. The snacks are amazing, the size of the places is perfect, not too much noise or distractions. It is clean enough could be better, but I don't have much complaints. The movie was nice too. & the seats were good.

So happy to have discovered this cool little repertory cinema! The front area is a chill café, cozy & aesthetic. The theatre space is in the back. One of the employees introduced the film ('One Battle After Another'), offering some background on the director & the main actor, & inviting us to share our thoughts on the film with them afterwards. Felt so personal & inviting, a throwback to another time. Easy to get to - about a 10min walk from Metro Laurier... or can take the 55 bus up St-Laurent. A Montreal gem :)

Love this place but it's kind of wack that they don't offer any options to change your dates or give you a credit for a different film if you have to cancel.

Reminds one of the good old days of independent cinema theatres before the 1990s. Excellent repertoire & small, cosy hall. Particularly appreciated are the mini introductions to each film made by staff - super brief but they add a sense of personality.

It's great that they have a bar & mini cafe as well, & I would be happy to support it more if only the prices there were even somewhat more reasonable & friendly. The cocktails are painfully more expensive for what you get than even at fancy cocktail bars & something like a cortado is up to two dollars more than at any cafe. Yes, it's a premium offering & gives patrons somewhere to sit & wait for a movie but it leaves a sense of having been squeezed that taints an another highly positive experience there.
