If you're looking to spend your morning surrounded by the quiet hum of Westmount privilege & the scent of generational wealth, Chez Nick is the absolute pinnacle of the Montreal diner experience. I've never felt more like a character in a Mordecai Richler novel while questioning my own tax bracket.
Chez Nick has been around since 1920, & walking in feels like a time capsule-if that time capsule was meticulously maintained & filled with people who own at least three different types of cashmere.
The Coffee: Finally, a diner that doesn't serve brown-tinted water. The coffee is aggressively strong-enough to make you reconsider every life choice you've made since the 90s-yet it manages to be incredibly smooth with absolutely zero bitterness. It's the kind of caffeine kick that makes you feel productive enough to actually read the Financial Post left on the counter.
The Pancakes: I'm convinced these are actually made of edible clouds. They are impossibly fluffy & have a subtle, refined sweetness that makes maple syrup feel like an optional (but mandatory) luxury. I had to hold mine down with a fork just to keep them from drifting toward the ceiling.
The Atmosphere: Perfectly'Westmount.' You get the classic diner vibe with vinyl booths & counter seating, but with the added bonus of hearing neighbors discuss their upcoming trips to the Hamptons.
The Service: Brisk, efficient, & wonderfully unimpressed by whoever you think you are. They've been serving the city for over a century, so don't expect them to be dazzled by your presence-just enjoy your eggs & keep the line moving.
It's the only place in the city where you can pay a premium for a club sandwich & leave feeling like you've made a solid investment in your own happiness. Highly recommend if you enjoy great food & feeling slightly less wealthy than everyone else in the room.
The overall experience wasn't bad, but when I asked them to change my coffee, I expected a fresh cup. Instead, they just brought back the same cup I had already used & refilled it, without changing or cleaning it. Even the spot where my lipstick mark was still on the rim. I found it very surprising that they did this instead of giving me a new cup.
Nick's is a Westmounr icon. I used to hang out there weekend nights as a teen. It is much more upscale now. Great brunches. I had a toasted gluten-free sandwich with tuna, alphalpha sprouts, & tomatoe. Excellent. The decaf coffee was very good & the fries were great, made from fresh potatoes. Quebec makes uniquely delicious fries
Went for breakfast in this beautiful little district of Westmount on Green. The food was generous & reasonably priced, very much a traditional breakfast diner. The staff were attentive & in good spirits even bright in the morning! Overall great little place for a coffee or quick bite.
I must say that anyone who rates this place low has no idea about what good service is ... the food was a typical dinner type breakfast with what you would expect . Omelette ( nicks special ) was done well & still had some creaminess to it . What was amazing is the service , how nice these people are !!! seriously a lot of locals ( which speaks a lot about food & service ) . It's a nice & comfortable spot for a great breakfast while you kick the laptop open & check a few emails. I did not feel rushed & the coffee kept coming . Seriously , Nicks is a great little place worth visiting again & again .
