About

Chez Lévêque serves as a definitive destination for classic French bistro cuisine that emphasizes technical precision and traditional preparation methods. The menu features an extensive selection of tartare variations, ranging from seasoned beef to fresh seafood preparations, each curated with balanced acidic notes and textures. Beyond these signature raw dishes, the kitchen executes authentic staples such as confit, buttery sauces, and slow-cooked protein dishes that define regional Parisian culinary culture. The interior reflects the functional aesthetic of a traditional bistro, utilizing compact seating arrangements and focused service to maintain a steady operational rhythm throughout service periods. This establishment prioritizes the integrity of simple, high-quality ingredients sourced to replicate the flavor profiles found in long-standing European brassieres. The focus remains squarely on delivering consistent, recognizable plates that adhere to long-established culinary protocols within the bistro framework.

Review Summary

Chez Lévêque is widely regarded as a Montreal institution, celebrated by many for its classic French cuisine, warm bistro atmosphere, and professional, attentive service. Guests frequently praise the high quality of dishes such as the steak, bouillabaisse, and lobster bisque, often noting that the menu offers excellent value, particularly with the table d'hôte and brasserie specials. While the majority of diners describe a welcoming and memorable experience, some feedback mentions occasional inconsistencies in food preparation, varying service quality, and concerns regarding noise levels or seating density. Despite these mixed remarks, the restaurant maintains a strong reputation as a reliable and authentic culinary destination that successfully captures the charm of a traditional French brasserie.

Classic French offering & atmosphere, dishes are top quality & service is very French - it's like being on a trip to France. You'll find some dishes here that you won't find anywhere else in Montreal.

This is a restaurant that presents itself as a higher end eatery.

Nothing much on the main menu appealed, so I had the Classic Levesques Salad. It was just OK - some sort of leafy greens, as I recall, with graded cheese & shredded ham on top. I also had a decaf élonger, which was also just OK. I had higher expectations.

My lunch companions were much happier with their meals. My wife raved over her blood sausage. They ordered from the Prix Fix & had entrées.

It was crowded & noisy until the crowd thinned out

Then there was a problem with the credit card device (mostly my bad), & when I arrived home, I realized I had been charged twice. They were most apologetic, & once I gave them my credit card number, it was fixed immediately.

Bottom line, I need to go back, give them a second chance, & try a main course.

This is a family favorite & a staple of Montreal city, this place has been open for 50 years, that is not easy to pull in a city like Montreal, goes to show you it's definitely a restaurant you're gonna want to visit, more than once even.

Cute French bistro in Outremont on rue Laurier. Has both indoor & outdoor dining.

Food is great & there's also a kids option for those under 14. Salmon served in a lemon sauce was phenomenal, loved the gazpacho, which was fresh, a dash of heat from the fresh pepper that was offered at the table. Perfect for a warm summer evening. Service is impeccable, friendly, attentive, & patient.

We dined outside, the traffic is minimal on a Thursday night with a pleasant breeze which made dining al fresco a delight. Atmosphere was more intimate & quieter than Leméac across the street that was much more lively.
