CHEZ LÉVÈQUE, a French brasserie in Outremont for over 50 years. From noon until late evening, this authentic Parisian "brasserie" boldly and lightly frolics on the themes of the Church in a bold humor. The institution has always excelled in perfectly mastered French classics to be savored with delight, such as homemade charcuterie by our master charcutier Frederic Triquet, tartares, duck dishes, offal, as well as seafood. Oysters, shrimp, lobsters and other seafood (depending on availability) freshly delivered by our local producers are a Chez Lévêque tradition, to the great delight of our loyal customers. Whether you come to sip a martini or champagne, feast on a comforting plate of foie gras or a club sandwich, or end the evening by nibbling on tasty treats, you will feel at home in this friendly, authentic and unpretentious restaurant!

Review Summary

Chez Lévêque is a long-standing Montreal French bistro with a warm, intimate atmosphere and generally strong value for money. The menu centers on classic French dishes, including house-made charcuterie and terrines, seafood, moules farcies, and hearty mains such as onglet and veal, with many dishes cited as delicious and well prepared and the wine list noted as deep and well matched. Service is repeatedly praised as professional and attentive, making guests feel welcome, though a few reviews mention crowded dining rooms, lively noise levels, or moments of formal or brisk service. Several diners highlight standout items like escargots, bouillabaisse, cod, tarte tatin, and desserts, while a small number note misses such as a less favored pasta dish or an imperfect course. The restaurant is described as an institution open for years, offering lunch and prix fixe options that make refined French cooking accessible, and many visitors say they look forward to returning for familiar favorites and a reliable dining experience.

Let's start with the food. While French cuisine is known for its elegance & depth of flavor, the offerings at La Cuisine Française were regrettably lackluster. Take, for instance, the beef onglet dish-a staple that should be a showcase of robust flavors & careful preparation. Instead, what arrived at my table was a portion that barely seemed substantial, accompanied by a paltry serving of two beans & five pieces of carrots. This imbalance in portion size not only left me unsatisfied but also questioned the fairness in pricing for what was essentially an incomplete meal. Moreover, inconsistency marred the dining experience further. While an other person at our table received the exact same dish bursting with an abundance of green beans & carrots, which starkly contrasted with the sparse accompaniments on my plate. Such disparity in portioning & presentation not only undermines the credibility of the kitchen but also detracts from the overall dining ambiance. In terms of innovation, Chez Leveque seems to be stagnant. The menu, while featuring classic French dishes, lacks the creative flair & modern twists that could elevate it to a memorable dining experience. French cuisine has evolved significantly over the years, embracing new techniques & ingredients without losing its essence. It is disappointing to see a restaurant with so much potential settle for mediocrity instead of pushing culinary boundaries. Service, though courteous, was not enough to compensate for the culinary shortcomings. Attentiveness from the staff was appreciated, yet the fundamental issue remains: a lack of attention to detail & a failure to deliver on the promise of a truly exceptional French dining experience. Chez Leveque has a long way to go if it wishes to reclaim its potential & stand out in the competitive world of French dining. A revitalized menu that balances tradition with innovation, consistent portion sizes that justify the prices, & a renewed commitment to culinary excellence are essential steps towards achieving this goal. Until then, diners seeking an authentic & satisfying French meal may find themselves disappointed by what this restaurant currently offers
