Chez José Café is widely regarded as a charming Montreal staple, celebrated for its authentic, flavorful Portuguese-inspired cuisine and cozy, vibrant atmosphere. Many visitors praise the generous portions and high-quality ingredients found in popular dishes like the seafood soup, Portuguese breakfast, and delicious crepes, while the pastel de nata is frequently noted as an absolute must-try. The café offers a warm, welcoming environment that feels like a home away from home, complemented by a friendly and attentive staff. Although the popular location can result in wait times on weekends and limited indoor space, the overall experience is consistently described as a delightful and memorable highlight for both locals and travelers exploring the neighborhood.

?Great Spot to Recharge - Unexpectedly Good Seafood Soup!
?We stopped by José Café on Avenue du Mont-Royal / Duluth to take a well-deserved break after a long day of walking around Montreal.
?They were out of the soup verte, so we ended up ordering the seafood soup instead, & it turned out to be a fantastic happy accident! The seafood soup was surprisingly delicious, full of flavor, & exactly what we needed to re-energize. Paired with a well-made iced oat milk latte, it hit the spot perfectly.
?It's a cozy, welcoming place to rest your feet & grab a quality bite & drink. Highly recommend stopping in if you're exploring the neighborhood!

Nice atmosphere, feels very homey. Inside seating can feel a little tight though. There is an outdoor terrace. Food is good, but I personally wouldn't wait in line for it, though the virtual waitlist system is nice. Service was a bit slow, but appreciated not feeling rushed for once!

Wanted to try this place for breakfast but finish disappointed. The food was just ok for the price was expecting more. At least the young lady receive you with joy but didn't receive the same service with the waiter didn't came back to ask if all is ok & if we needed something else.

While the food isn't exceptionally perfect, this café is in such a nice part of Montréal, the atmosphere was perfect. & even long after I ate, the servers were very kind & let me stay & gave me free water refills while I sheltered from the rain.

Saw good reviews on this place so decided to give it a try during my weekend trip to Montreal. The food was good & flavourful but I personally don't think it was worth it considering our overall experience. We came on a Saturday afternoon so a wait time was expected. We ended up joining the waitlist in person & it was roughly an hour wait. Once we were seated, we ordered immediately - the portuguese breakfast platter. We waited probably 45 minutes for our food to come & then another 15 minutes for our bill. I understand that it could be busy but by the time we ordered, the lunch rush had already cleared out quite a bit (multiple empty tables inside & on patio). I also think waiting 15 minutes for just the bill is unreasonable, we even reminded our server 3 times for it. Don't get me wrong the staff there was very friendly & food was decent but I probably won't visit again.

The atmosphere is nice, though it lacks a cohesive aesthetic.
The coffee was okay, not particularly strong, so it didn't hit me as well as I'd hoped.
However, the food was really good & reasonably priced… it's Duluth Avenue at the end of the day, so we had to put our names on a waitlist.
We waited 20 minutes & then almost an hour for our food. Knowing there would be wait time, I wouldn't do it again, but if there wasn't, I might.
The menu isn't very diverse, though.

I've been enjoying Chez José Café for 20 years +. I can confidently say it's consistency have never lack. Great ingredients to deliver tasteful results. Always a great vibe & a plus if José is there himself. Highly recommend.
