It was in 1934 that Mr. Delisle and Mr. Morissette first opened Chez Delmo just up the street from where it is now. Back then it had 3 floors; a seafood restaurant on the main floor, a gaming house on the 2nd and brothel on the 3rd.
In 1964, Mr. Roland Périsset took over the operation and closed the 2 top floors.
Our menu has changed little over the past 80 years. Quality fish and seafood prepared and served in a traditional way. The house specialty is the Dover sole meunière. Our chefs take great pride in this dish, which used to be de-boned table-side, but now done just before serving. Our lobster bisque takes 2 days to create and the classic cream of tomato remains virtually unchanged for decades.
We have stayed true to cuisine classique, resisting the popular tide of nouvelle cuisine. Traditionally prepared quality seafood; unadorned and unembellished.
Over the years, Delmo has had its share of facelifts; the 18 bar-stools surrounding the granite bar are all that are left of the original 38. The iron sign outside and its original lighted tulips, were salvaged and still greet all our clients. The destruction of the original porcelain tile frieze that decorated the walls behind the bar prompted us to ask local muralist and celebrated artist, Carlito DalCeggio, to reproduce his version of the scenic garden party adorned with the verse from 18th English poet John Gay, “from wine what sudden friendship springs”.
Chez Delmo stands out as a premier seafood destination in Old Montreal, offering top quality, fresh ingredients, generous portions, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that blends historic charm with modern elegance. Diners repeatedly praise house specialties like the Dover sole Meuniere and lobster ravioli, the seafood tower, and a variety of seafood pastas, all prepared with skill and care. The service is consistently described as friendly, attentive, professional, and knowledgeable, with a strong emphasis on hospitality and a personal touch that makes guests feel at home. The interior and location near Notre Dame Basilica contribute to an appealing setting, from intimate bar seating to refined dining rooms, and the overall experience is often described as memorable and ideal for celebrations or special occasions. While prices reflect the quality and setting, many reviews note excellent value for quality, thoughtful wine pairings, and accommodations for dietary restrictions. Overall, Chez Delmo is portrayed as a reliable, high-end yet welcoming choice for seafood lovers visiting Montreal, with a reputation built on great food, superb service, and a distinctive atmosphere.
Walleye was one of the most perfect meals I've had in a very long time. Ian was an excellent waiter. Atmosphere was comfortable & relaxed, but still fancy & special.

We really enjoyed our experience at Chez Delmo. We ordered the oysters, tomato soup, salmon tartare & the Dover sole. Everything was really good. Ian, our waiter was superb. We had a lot of questions for him. I had no room for dessert but wish I did :) I highly recommend.
Lamiaa :)
Very cozy restaurant & attentive staff. We had a delicious seafood pasta & langoustines. All staff (particularly our server, Ian) paid great attention to detail which made for a wonderful dining experience.
Very good Friend of mine was in Town from the Caribbean this week. I personally am on a special diet & can only eat Seafood so we looked for a restaurant that served that but with a good rating. Chez Delmo seemed to be a choice that was fair enough to try. Now bear in mind that I am a critic that will tell it as it is without filter. We were greeted warmly by the host & our Jackets were hung up for us. Once seated, we didn't wait long to be greeted by our Waiter & asked wahat we would like yo drink. After ordering our entrees & food, we were given complimentary taste of something that I forgot the name of but found it unique but very tasty. For Supper, my friend ordered the Surf & Turf & I had the Holland Dover Sole. The Food was cooked just right & very tasty. The Ungava Gin Tonic / Soda was well proportioned & tasted just right. If I can give this restaurant 20 stars I would because honestly the experience there was so good. I highly recommend Chez Delmo. I certainly will be going back very soonand will definitely bring friends & family to experience this Beautiful restaurant. Thanks for reading & thank you Chez Delmo for such a wonderful experience.
Ian, our waiter, was extremely helpful & patient! The food was delicious & we would have given it 6 stars if we could. This restaurant is a MUST if you're in Montreal. & while you're there, ask for Ian for the best experience!!
The food was wonderful! The ribeye was superbly cooked & the tomato soup was delicious. But what made the meal even better was our server Ian. Charming, professional, & very sweet.

Great food, great service, & comfortable. I sat at the bar alone & had great conversations with the staff. They knew when to engage in conversation & when to let me enjoy my meal. It's a delicate balance, especially when im not feeling social, but they were all very pleasant. It was a slow Wednesday night & was even able to meet one of the owners. Benoit was very personable. Will definitely be back.

I gave 5 stars because is the max but I could give more if the rating allows it. Place is outstanding all over the words. Extremely clean & very welcoming place. Food was delicious. I ordered as an appetizer shrimp cocktail, not words to describe the plate, the sauce, tomatoes & thick jumbo shrimp with an outstanding presentation, as a main menu I ordered a lobster thermidor & the flavor melted in my mouth. I never had a lobster thermidor full of melted cheese on top, was out of this world. Only thing is, was a little pricey, the menu does not show prices, just MP (market price at the moment) We paid $210.00 per 2 main dish of lobster thermidor. But really well worthy every bite. Service was excellent as well, we had not to ask for anything, waiter there for us all the time with a big friendly smile. Highly recommended place to eat.
Quite possibly the greatest seafood in the city! Everything is served fresh, tasty & great service. Tucked into Old Montreal, you do not want to miss this place! Killer oysters as well!
We had a wonderful dinner at Delmo. We were warmly greeted & helped with our coats. It was early & the restaurant was nearly empty but it filled rapidly, including a large corporate party of ten that caused us to move to the bar to finish our meal. The staff was completely accommodating & understanding. No issues with timing. I had a great combo of delicious endive salad followed by a perfect, very meaty lobster bisque. A Petit Chablis was a great accompaniment. My husband says his poached salmon was perfect-a rare compliment. Staff could not have been nicer to tourists from Chicago!
