The food is delicious, service was awesome & the feel of the old Deli style just made it cozy.
Local friends brought us here right after our flight to try our first proper smoked meat sandwich & did not disappoint. Friday evening, it was quite quiet. The decor is very old school diner complete with vinyl booths, stained glass lamps (love!) & lovely service. We ordered the original smoked meat sandwich platter with some shrimp & steak & upgraded to a poutine of course. The sandwich was quite tasty but the steak was a little dry. Not surprising as we didn't come here for the steak. Loved the poutine though. A must try! We also ordered a cheesecake to go on the road with us to share with some friends & OMG is it heavy & dense! True deli cafe style. I love my cheesecake but I couldn't finish my slice sadly.
Eating at Chenoy's was meant to be a trip down memory lane...Chenoy's is barely a shadow of what it used to be. It was disappointing & under whelming after an almost 20 yr. absence from living in the area. Perhaps my memories are slightly tainted on the nostalgia- however, even as a stand alone dining experience it paled to a number of similar deli style restaurants. I ordered the Jumbo Plate. It was less meat than I was told (definitely Not the 1 lb they told me before ordering)... the rest of the meal was made up of lots of fries (over compensation?) & a decent side coleslaw. All in all - Quite Over Priced! While the food quality was good, I could not say it was exceptional in any way. As far as atmosphere- the place was & seems dead every time I go by it.
We just ate at Chenoys on St. Jean in the west island. We wanted a good smoked meat sandwich sorely disappointed.
First, there was none of the dry old fashioned smoked meat again, so we ordered the regular spicy one. Unfortunately the meat was cut too thick, but the real disappointment was that they changed the bread they used to use & replaced the rye with a new flimsy toast style bread. It just turned to mush on the sandwich, had a different flavour that didn't fit with the sandwich, & the whole flavor was off. Service was fine though & that was the only good thing.
The smoked meat sandwich was a real disappointment after being so much better for 30 years.
If this is what they will continue do in the future, we'll go elsewhere like Moe's, Smoked Meat Pete's, & Abys which all have better smoked meat sandwiches than Chenoy's now.
