Overall, it is celebrated as a standout spot in the city for those seeking traditional flavors and a satisfying dining experience.
My husband & I had the pleasure of dining at Braseiro. The food is authentic Portuguese. Our server was excellent, we found out that our parents emigrated from Portugal in the 1950's, his obviously to Montreal, mine to a small community in Ontario. I told him we like to try Portuguese restaurants in our travels & I told him the grilled octopus was better than the one I had in Lisbon. Thank you to server's ( I forgot his name) to his mother who continues to make her Portuguese dishes. I highly recommend this spot if you enjoy real Portuguese cuisine.
Tucked away like a well-kept secret, this Portuguese charcoal grill restaurant is far more than a neighborhood staple - it's a culinary pilgrimage for those craving authenticity with a touch of elegance. From the moment you step inside, the scent of smoldering charcoal & marinated meats transports you to the heart of Portugal, where tradition is not just respected - it's revered.
The ambiance strikes a rare balance: rustic yet refined. Warm wood tones, traditional Azorean tile accents, & an open grill set the tone, while attentive service & curated Portuguese wines elevate the experience.
The frango no churrasco - chicken grilled over open flame - is the soul of the menu. Crispy-skinned, deeply seasoned, & kissed by smoke, it's a masterclass in simplicity & depth. But the sophistication reveals itself in the sides: tender roasted vegetables, perfectly salted potatoes, & house-made piri-piri that's fiery yet balanced.
Don't skip the bacalhau - a dish that demands respect & delivers reward. The cod is buttery, the olive oil rich & aromatic, & the garlic confit melts on the tongue. Each bite feels like a nod to generations past, lovingly modernized.
For dessert, the pastel de nata arrives warm with a delicate brûlée top - a simple, elegant finale to a meal grounded in heritage & elevated with care.
In a city full of noise, this place doesn't shout - it speaks softly, with integrity. It's Portuguese to the core, but with the kind of quiet sophistication that invites both regulars & newcomers to feel like they've come home.

I wanted to like this place. Friendly, casual vibe. It seems very popular. One waitress was very nice, even if the other one seemed put out. She was just clearly slammed by the rush. No hard feelings or anything, but unfortunately, her disposition was not counterbalanced by exceptional food. On the contrary, I was disappointed, gastronomically speaking. The croquetas were deep fried dumplings with a liquidy paste inside, the grilled cod was dry & inedibly salty, & the chicken plus ribs combo was chicken plus 2 1/2 small dry ribs. I am usually easy to please with Portuguese grill. Unfortunately, Braseiro missed the mark.
Great local spot for authentic Portuguese dishes...a few blocks up from Little Portugal. The grilled sardines & octopus, salad & steak were all delicious...we will definetely return next trip to Montreal!
First time visiting & will definitely come back for more, great variety in the menu. We had the grilled calamaris, sardines, bitoque & meat plater & it was delicious even down to the fries.. & that sauce, yummy. Can't wait to try the rest like the chicken & octopus. Staff is very courteous, helpful & humane. There's also a full bar. Sangria was excellent & looking to try that vinha verde soon!
I've been here a few times now & it is my go-to in the neighbourhood when I have a craving for grilled meat. A cozy, homey place with friendly staff & yummy food. Even the fries, which are usually an afterthought at most restaurants, are worth the calories here. You won't leave hungry.
