Reviews describe Boulangerie Chez Fred as a standout for croissants, choclatines and other viennoiseries, with many calling the croissants among the best in Montreal and praising flaky, buttery textures, while prices are noted as reasonable for the quality. The bakery is consistently busy with fresh pastries and good bread, and staff are frequently described as friendly and efficient, though the space leans more toward grab-and-go than a long sit-down cafe. Some reviews mention occasional declines in texture or flavor and changes in ingredients, and a few disappointments such as a sour coffee or mealy croissants when not freshly baked, and almond croissants that run out, yet several commenters emphasize the value and reliability for pastries, baguettes and desserts, with many considering it a must-visit.
It truly pains me to rate a bakery this low, especially since we did try a few good products. The atmosphere was incredibly uninviting. A little effort in this vein would go a long way into attracting a lot more business. I do want to make note that the employees are very nice.
I ordered two bags of chouquette (20) & only received one. It is very disappointing to spend your hard earned money on two items & only receive one. While the chouquettes were amazing I can't give more than one stars since I only received half of my order. Beware if you order online you may only receive part of your order. EDIT: I ended up changing the review, they're the only baker my in Montreal that really nail chouquette I can't stay mad at them!
Les sandwiches au poulet avec la complotée d'oignons sont très bons (la baguette est une véritable baguette comme on les fait en France). Les croissants aux amandes aussi 😍 Je recommande chaudement cette boulangerie !
Chez Fred used to have the best pastries in Montréal without a doubt. Now, like many other similar places, it's hit or miss. Croissants & chocolatines can be bready & dry. An almond croissant was hard. The service was never great but the quality of the product made up for it.
A breath of fresh air for Sherbrooke west with the demise of the stale gascone . Located close to decarie but worth the short trip . Staff very friendly efficient & accommodating. Everything is done fresh daily with highest quality ingredients , selection is not big but of outstanding quality. Selection is not big , but it's the best French bakery on this side of the Atlantic !!
Safe place to sit down, with friendly staff, & omg delicious pastry! I absolutely recommend this place. Classy atmosphere, pleasant aroma & no loud music for once!
The best almond croissants I've ever had out of the 5-6 popular bakeries in Montreal. The almond filling is very custardy & doesn't have the artificial almond flavoring that I sometimes tasted in an almond croissant. Their butter croissants are lacking a little bit of flakiness, but are very buttery so they are still pretty decent overall.

I've passed by Chez Fred many times & finally decided to try them out; wish I would've tried them sooner! Great sourdough bread! & we lived the croissant breakfast sandwich. The place has a nice & calm atmosphere & truly focuses on the art of breadmaking.
Possibly the best croissants (plain & almond) in Montreal, possibly better than Paris. My father comes expressly for it😊 Let's not discuss how much butter is in them.
