Bernice is widely celebrated as a premier destination in Montreal for indulgent, high-quality baked goods, with visitors frequently praising the exceptional variety of cookies, cakes, and cinnamon rolls. Guests often highlight the thick, decadent, and flavorful nature of the treats, frequently drawing favorable comparisons to iconic bakeries in other major cities. Beyond the impressive selection of pastries and coffee, the atmosphere is often described as cozy and welcoming, complemented by a staff that is consistently noted for being friendly, passionate, and helpful. While some patrons mention that the items are on the pricier side, many agree that the generous portions and the premium quality of ingredients make the experience well worth the visit for a special, satisfying treat.
Hands down the best cinnamon rolls we've ever had. You can taste the high quality in the ingredients. The place is cute, staff is kind. Highly recommend.
We ordered the raspberry lemon birthday cake from Bernice, & unfortunately it was very disappointing for the price. At around $75, we expected much better quality & flavor. The cake was overly sweet, & honestly all we could really taste was sugar. The raspberry & lemon flavors barely came through, making the cake feel very average overall.
For this price range, there are much better options out there, we personally found Le Cavalier to be far superior in quality & taste. Sadly, this cake did not feel worth the money.
Bernice is a really solid bakery with some standout items.
Their brioche is basically a cinnamon-roll cousin - super moist, fluffy, & indulgent. It does lean on the sweeter side, but if you like rich pastries, it hits the spot.
The blueberry coffee cake is an absolute 10/10 - soft, crumbly, perfectly balanced, & honestly one of the best things I've had there. My only complaint is that it's not available nearly as often as I wish it were. The cinnamon coffee cake is also delicious, though it can be a bit dense at times compared to the blueberry.
The cookies are very much Levain-style: thick, crispy on the outside, super moist inside. I tried a variety - double chocolate, chocolate chip, cranberry white chocolate, funfetti - but most were very sweet, to the point where I couldn't finish them. The standout for me was the chocolate chip with pecans; the nuts cut the sweetness perfectly & made it much more balanced.
My only real downside: the price. Around $40 for six cookies feels steep, even for high-quality baking.
That said, Bernice clearly knows what they're doing. If you're into rich, indulgent baked goods & don't mind a sweeter profile, it's worth a visit - especially if you can get your hands on that blueberry coffee cake.
My boyfriend & I stopped by this bakery to grab a quick bite right before they closed. They were so so sweet & we were absolutely floored by the pastries. I wholeheartedly believe that the quality of the pastries reflect their prices & I would recommend that everyone has the amazing experience of trying their items. I will definitely be coming back to take my time & try more things!!
I am such a difficult critic when it comes to coffee.
The best latte, cappuccino or just a simple expresso! & of course you must try the cookies.
The pastry chef is very creative with flavors & using the best quality ingredients for his creations.
UNE BOULANGERIE INCONTOURNABLE !!!
Unfortunately the quality is inconsistent & there is a lack of care about customer service. Be careful with full cake orders & delivery orders.
We purchased the strawberry shortcake & it tasted (& looked) not fully baked unfortunately.
Also placed an order on uber eats for the cake of the day which was shown on their IG as a pistachio honey cake & instead received a Black Forest cake slice which was featured as their cake of the day the day before. Really disappointing as we contacted them about it & they did not make it right & said they were sorry if we were « confused » by their IG (even if they only featured the honey cake that day). When you are paying over $70+ for desserts, the experience & quality should be much better.
Their cake is Masterchef Quality!!! probably the best cake i had in Montreal! Also their cookies taste exactly like the famous NYC bakery Levigne's cookies.
Outstanding Service & Delicious Pastries!
From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm & friendly welcome. The staff was incredibly kind & attentive, making the experience even more enjoyable. Their excellent service truly stood out! There was a great variety of pastries, & everything looked delicious. I decided to try a brioche with cheese, ham, & bacon. It was so good that I had to order another one right away! I also bought two cookies & a croissant, & everything was of exceptional quality.
Beyond the amazing food & coffee, what really made a difference was the outstanding service. The staff was genuinely friendly, making the place feel even more cozy & inviting. I'll definitely be coming back!
