Edit: I have gone a few times since my original review & unfortunately, I have noticed a drop in quality & size of their bagel sandwiches.
Delicious food & reasonable prices for the portions that you get. Service was good when it was not busy, but during rush time it was a bit chaotic. Have been here twice & will certainly come back!
I ordered the omlette sandwich which was an interesting experience, have never eaten this before. The omlette was fantastic & the sauce was great, but the sandwich lost it's format within a few bites. It got messy but it was enjoyable, even though I couldn't really experience the actual bagel amidst the other flavours going on. There was a generous spread of fruit on everyone's plate which added some value. I wasn't blown away by the meal itself to be honest but I was satisfied. No complaints on the service either, food was served quickly. What really redeemed this place for me were the few bagels I took with me. The cheddar one did not make it home, it was phenomenal. The other two bagels that did make it to my apartment were also of astounding quality. This place is pretty far from my top brunch spots but it might have become my favourite new bagel spot, the prices are pretty good compared to other gourmet bagels as well.
What an amazing place. I had trouble imagining Montreal bagels under expanding or for my BLT sandwich but they were exceptional. Fresh & tasty. The fruits that came with the meal was lovely fresh & definitely ripe. Busy place but everyone has a smile in a kind word.
They are pet-friendly, even in the winter, which is nice (on the terasse)! Service is good, but since the concept is'unlimited coffee or tea,' you serve your own cup of coffee, & so the servers only give you your food. They're very kind, though ! The open terrasse in the winter is nice, but I wish they had it heated already. We asked the server to heat it when we arrived, but it never really got hot, & our puppy was freezing. As for the food itself, I'd say it's pricey for the quantity & quality of what you get. The bagels are good but nothing out of the ordinary. The sandwich itself is loaded, but for the price, you'd think it comes with a side or two, but it doesn't. Plus, I wanted to substitute the tomatoes for something else, but it was an extra anyway. The server was very nice in trying to help me find something that wouldn't cost too much to substitute, like peppers or onions, but I still think it shouldn't be an extra if you're replacing a veggie with another. Overall, food is okay. Service is good. The atmosphere is fine, but it could be better.
🥯 Update: November 2024 I've been coming to bagel St-Lo almost as long as it's been open, so I've seen it evolve over the years. In the beginning, it was a cozy, popular local bagel spot where you could expect to see the owner herself every day. It became so successful that they expanded into the space nextdoor. Even through a global pandemic, the community stepped up to keep their favourite bagel joint afloat. Today, St-Lo is a bustling brunch & breakfast restaurant & permanent fixture in Verdun that practically runs itself. Here's the thing: over the years, I've evolved too. In the beginning, I tried tons of things on the menu. Then I became vegetarian, but I still had several options. Eventually, I became vegan, & suddenly I could have only one dish on the menu. What disappoints me is that in all this time, the menu has hardly changed. Sure, they redesigned the look & feel of it, & maybe changed a few details here & there, but I guess they figure why change something that works. Today, as I sat in front of my plate, looking at the SAME flat gluten-free vegan bagel they've had for years, stuffed with the SAME arugula, hummus & Alfalfa sprouts, with a side of the SAME (but almost imperceptibly smaller) plain bell-pepper-&-lettuce salad, topped with the SAME dressing (which now makes me think of that "Svbway sandwich smell"), garnished with ONE kalamata olive & ONE cherry tomato, as usual, I started to wonder if this might be the last time I ate here for awhile. I still love St-Lo, but there's only so many times you can have the same dish without getting fed up of it. I wish they'd switch up a few menu items made with local, seasonal ingredients, like they do with their seasonal soup. Un 2e choix végane serait bien apprécié en tout cas. 🙏🏻 🗓 Original review (2020) I love Bagel St-Lo. It's one of Verdun's hidden gems. Bagel St-Lo makes the sweetest, freshest, most delicious bagels in Montreal. In my opinion, they're even better than hot St-Viateur & Fairmount bagels. I buy half a dozen St-Lo bagels almost every week; I can reheat them in the oven a week later after having kept them only in the fridge, & they taste just as fresh, which I can't say for any other bagel I've tried, fresh or day-old. Bagel St-Lo provides compostable takeout containers, paper straws & spaghetti sticks to stir your coffee. They have two self-serve coffee stations with mismatched mugs. Their black coffee is great, & I love their almond milk lattes. Bagels are incorporated into just about every dish on the breakfast, brunch & lunch menu. The restaurant has great vegetarian options & some vegan & gluten-free options. I've tried & enjoyed meals on the spot & to go, & they never disappoint. They're usually just enough for me, but someone who likes a copious breakfast might not be entirely full. The restaurant decor is eclectic & fun to look at, & the owners regularly display local artists' work. The place is really cozy & has outdoor seating in the summer. Bagel St-Lo is so popular that they acquired the space next door & expanded their restaurant, so seating has doubled. It's a big win for local diners! The new counter space is trendy but fits in well with the casual, colourful space. I love eating out on the terrasse in the summer. The wait is rarely more than 5 to 10 minutes, the table service is fast, & the staff is always very friendly. It's no wonder the place is always packed!
Spend 65$ dollars there. Ordered a pick up cause I was a little on a time crunch. The sandwiches & services was amazing. But what I'm dissatisfied about is that they didn't bag the 6 extra bagels I ordered with my sandwiches. It was in brown paper bag & the bagel bag was just in there... I had runnings around to do & by the time I got home & realized they were dried up like a rock. Very disappointed..
Stopped here on our way out of Montreal & so glad we did rather than a touristy place in the city. Very cute cafe, nice patio with tasty bagel sandwiches. I appreciated the soup was dairy free.
