Wait staff is excellent & explains everything. Very apologetic & hace is free shots when one dish was delayed (we honestly did not even notice). Front of the house did not feel as welcoming but once past that we had a great time!
With one exception, the food was fantastic. The foie gras poutine was off the charts delicious--totally worth the Bon Appetit assessment as one of the best poutines in Montreal. The halibut was perfectly done, the endive blue cheese salad was fresh & delightfully balanced, & the foie gras profiteroles would satisfy anyone enjoying this delicacy. The pork chop with morels & chanterelles, however, was tough & fatty. The dulce de leche lava cake was scrumptious; the pistachio profiteroles less so. The atmosphere was very lively & fun, & the staff clearly enjoyed great camaraderie with each other. The music got louder as the evening went on & it became too loud for us. The person who greeted us when we arrived was extremely warm & friendly. Our waiter, too, was very pleasant & helpful, including with recommendations about how much food to order & the wine. If we were only basing this service review on these two, we'd give 5 stars. But we did have a significant complaint that wasn't the waiter's fault--the service was incredibly slow. It took a long time to get our first course & then took VERY long in between courses--in one instance 45 minutes. We were seated at about 6:15 pm & did not finish until 10 pm. That was at least an hour longer than it should have been. Aside from the slow service, I'd definitely recommend Au Pied de Cochon for a delicious meal.
I booked the only reservation available, 10PM. The restaurant came recommended by a local & I was a bit wary at first given the numerous email reminders that we would be charged if we didn't show up. I was worried it would be stuffy & formal. I was very wrong. Lively atmosphere, friendly jovial service & really good food. It is known for its "duck in a can" entree which unfortunately I didn't try. But the foie gras profiteroles, bleu cheese salad & "fish & chips" were amazing. Highly recommend. The place was really cool!!!
Had an excellent experience here. My husband & I have had Au Pied de Cochon on our list for years & were excited to go when visiting Montreal with our 6 month old daughter. Unfortunately right before our reservation, something came up with our daughter & we had to reschedule. Despite reservations being booked weeks in advance, we texted the restaurant & the staff graciously rescheduled us to the following evening. They were incredibly accommodating given that we had our daughter in tow in the stroller. Every staff member we interacted with was kind & you can tell genuinely wanted to give us an excellent experience. & that's what we had! The food was perfectly coursed, balanced, & innovative. One of the best meals we have had & we will not hesitate to recommend Au Pied de Cochon to friends & family visiting Montreal!
Great dining experience & fantastic food. We were visiting Montreal for only a few days & honestly considered eating here more than once. 20/10 would recommend.
The best meal we had in our two weeks in Canada. Truly excellent Canadian wagyu cote du bouef with pommes dauphinoise & asparagus. Extensive wine list. Very strong on french wines. Great, friendly, knowledgeable service. Recommended.
TDLR: Service great, food mediocre if not slightly below average. Would not recommend or visit again based on personal experience. To start off, service was good. All service staff were extremely nice & helpful. We saw a few chefs & definitely kudos to how hard they worked to keep the kitchen running. However the food fell short of my expectations. We ordered the foie gras nigiri, duck in a can, & salt & maple fries. Food took an *extremely* long time to come out. The foie gras nigiri was the best thing we tried that night, although the flavour balance was mediocre - strong peanut butter & soy sauce taste that overpowered the foie gras. The duck in a can took over an hour to come out. We actually saw the Can packaged & ready but our server had set it so we get the fries & main at the same time. This led to the Can sitting there for a good 20 minutes until I asked if we could get the main first. Hence the food was room temperature. That would have been fine but the amount of duck meat was about a palm size amount & the rest was just skin & fat that we couldn't even cut through with a knife. Flavour was good though. If this was the normal size, I wouldn't recommend it for $60+. The fries we received was over fried the first time, leading to a bitter taste. We asked for a new order of it, & the second time was better although quite a lot of pieces were still burned (like dark brown/black). Although I was disappointed by our visit, I would like to think we just visited on a bad day/time. We had actually wanted to order additional things during our wait time because we were so hungry, but decided against it in case we had to wait another hour. All in all, I don't think I would recommend this place or come back.
The wait staff were excellent but the food was nothing special. So disappointing after looking forward to this meal for over a year & visiting from Australia to dine. The best item was by far the foie gras poutine, however it initially came out with no foie gras on it! We had to say something for them to notice. The fish mains had no salt on it & tasted terrible. The duck in a can was okay, but sloppy & overrated. The mussel dish was so oily & could have used some bread to accompany it - however the wait staff did not mention this at the time of ordering. The wait times for food was quite long. The restaurant itself is very loud & crammed. I sadly would not recommend this place, which I am disappointed to say as we were really looking forward to it.
I had a fantastic solo date here on my last night in Montreal. This place has been recommended to me with fervor from another foodie friend of mine, & boy I was just enamored by the vibe of the joint, the staff & of course, the food & wine. I sat at the bar & made friends with the bartender & staff as well as the other diners sitting near me - thank you beautiful folks for the hospitality & generosity! Their menu changes regularly from what I understand, based on seasonality of ingredients. If you can order any of the dishes I had - I highly recommend. Oysters were nicely shucked & presented, with a quail egg cured yolk to garnish - this was really nice, especially with the champagne they have on the menu. I followed that with the appetizer size of their lobster rolo - this came with beautifully cooked & sauced fiddleheads & morels. Such a delight of a dish! Well balanced overall. For my mains I tried two of their foie gras dishes & you MUST order them - the foie gras nigiri & the buckwheat pancake. I've never had foie gras served like nigiri over a delicately maple seasoned portion of rice - & let me tell you, I'm still salivating over these bites. I paired with a Rhône & it was perfect. The buckwheat pancake was delightfully crispy, accompanied by maple syrup & a smoky bacon/ ham slice, & of course, a generous portion of foie gras. Delectable! I for sure will be coming back to this establishment & I'm excited for them to continue to establish themselves as a Montreal staple. Merci!
Amazing experience at Au Pied de Cochon to celebrate a birthday! The food is rich & delicious, but there are smaller starters that allow you to try more of the menu! The service was fantastic & attentive, & price was reasonable for the quality of food! Highly recommend this place for a special occasion.
The food was amazing! We ordered the Duck foie gras poutine, the pork chop, Duck in a Can & Pudding Chomeur for dessert. We couldn't be more impressed with the flavour & the quality of our meal. Our server was fantastic & was very thorough in taking us through the menu. We were sat at a deuce table in front of the service area which was very busy & chaotic. We felt several times that the servers or staff would fall into us but instead ended up bumping into each other to navigate the narrow aisle. There really wasn't enough room for the table & the staff in that area. But we were very glad to have had the experience at this wonderful restaurant & wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.
Friends had recommended/demanded I go to Au Pied de Cochon when I visited Montréal & they were not wrong - this was just a fabulous night. Could not fault it on anything - food, wine, service, atmosphere or price. I had excellent veal sweetbreads, snow crab mapo tofu & the devastating Pouding chômeur as well - totally full but so worth it.
What a fantastic restaurant & experience. I would give it 6 stars if I could! The staff is really friendly, engaging, & courteous. The food is impeccable & the portions generous. The drinks (cocktails) were amazing, & they'll even make you customized cocktails that aren't on the menu. The vibe & atmosphere, a little busy but fabulous. Everything we tried was full of flavour & the highlight was the duck in a can & the creme caramel dessert. Highly recommended this place even if you get a 5pm reservation! (They're pretty much sold out always)
Absolutely LOVED the food! I'm so glad we ordered what we did. The foie gras nigiri melts in your mouth & is such a good appetizer. The duck in a can is frickin delicious! I would recommend getting some extra bread on the side to sop up the sauce (that's what I'd do next time!) I also highly recommend the creme caramel. I don't see a lot of places that pair it with a coffee cream, but it works soooo well. Only thing is that the restaurant can be a bit crowded so service can be kind of slow, but the servers themselves are very helpful & friendly. I am 100% coming back next time I'm in Montreal!
This restaurant lives up to the hype of being a culinary institution in Montreal. I got to visit this restaurant during a brief stay in the city, & from the moment I stepped in to the moment I left, the experience was very memorable. I made an reservation for my gf & I to sit at the bar, which in hindsight, was the right call because you get to sit in front of the kitchen & watch the chefs working hard & assembling all the dishes (highly recommend sitting at the bar). The staff, from the server to even the chefs, were very welcoming, accommodating, & stayed on top of our every need from beginning to end, communicating with us in English since we do not speak French, ensuring that our waters were always topped off, giving us plenty of information about every dish & drink we ordered, as well as making good recommendations that worked out for our palette. All the dishes were incredibly tasty, but especially their infamous Duck in a Can, which I now understand why it's such a classic! We had a few libations, all well prepared, & ciders. The desserts were really good too! All in all, I am looking forward to going back one day & cannot recommend this place enough.
Had dinner at this place this week, definitely didn't live it up to the hype. The restaurant was overly crowded, everyone is trying to move the table down so they can push themselves into the seat. At the end, whoever sat at the back of the restaurant had no way to even breathe!! & that was what exactly happened to us. When we reflected this to the waiter, she just asked the next table to move down, but clearly there were no space to move!!! Anyway the appetizer was great, we ordered four different one & love all of them. Highly recommended the duck tartare, perfectly done in taste & presentation! That said, the aged pork chop we ordered was very disappointing, it was dry & no favour to it. All in all, I wouldn't come back if they don't rearrange the seating. The food is good but hey it is Montreal, you get good food everywhere!!!
The sweetest servers I have ever had. The food was amazing, the atmosphere was beautiful, I recommend getting the Tanjia for two, you & your guest will definitely be full & your bellies will be happy.
Such cool place. I definitely recommend. The canned duck is what drew me here & definitely did not disappoint.
