Uncle Tetsu in Montreal is a Japanese bakery located on Rue Pierce near Concordia University, specializing in airy, Japanese-style fluff cheesecakes & freshly baked treats. The space is small, clean, & counter-service focused, with a warm & simple setup designed for quick pick-ups. Stepping inside, you are greeted by the comforting aroma of eggs, butter, & warm batter as fresh batches come out of the oven, stamped right in front of you before being boxed up.
The signature original Japanese cheesecake is the main attraction & lives up to its reputation. It has a light, pillow-like texture that almost melts in your mouth, striking a nice balance between a soufflé & a traditional cheesecake without being overly sweet or heavy. For chocolate lovers, the chocolate cheesecake offers a richer flavor profile while keeping that same delicate, airy bounce.
Beyond the full-sized cheesecakes, the shop offers a few smaller individual treats that make great quick snacks. The cheese tarts feature a buttery, flaky crust filled with a warm, creamy cheese center that has a slightly richer & tangy finish compared to the main cake. They also serve madeleines & rusks, which give a crisp, toasted crunch that pairs well with tea or coffee if you want something to save for later.
The ordering process at the counter is fast & organized, with staff efficiency moving the line along quickly even when a queue forms out the door. Since the shop is compact & operates mostly as a grab-&-go spot without indoor seating, getting your box handed to you fresh & warm is a smooth experience from start to finish.
Overall, Uncle Tetsu provides a light & satisfying dessert experience centered around simplicity & great texture. The combination of freshly stamped soufflé cheesecakes & rich cheese tarts makes it a standout bakery stop in the neighborhood. It is the kind of place I would regularly drop by to grab a warm cake to share with friends or take home after grabbing dinner nearby.
The cheesecake was delicious. The right balance of light , fluffy & sweetness.
Just hype. Tastes like 5 minute old bread soaked in milk, breaks off so easily it's impossible to use a fork (cuz you know, cheeseCAKE), not sweet at all nor bland (again,'cake'), doesn't even taste like cheese. Pricing is fair for what it is, but a classic New York or Basque goes a long way
Staff was great i can't deny that, & quality control is exceptional. Just that the cheesecake is anything but good
Loved the cake, freshly cooked & warm from the oven & not too sweet. Packaging was awesome too.
The lady who served us was kind, helpful & polite. Will definitely try again.
Love their cakes there to share with my friends & family 🫶 it's a bit hidden the place for where it's located but once you found it, you won't regret to try their sweet there 💕💕💕 it's a very nice ambiance & absolutely love their dessert there ❤?
Japanese cheesecakes at Uncle Tetsu are fluffy, not too sweet & delicious! The person who greets you at the register is always smiling, she's extremely nice & polite. I bring the cheesecakes to family gathering & everyone loves them. Also, fyi, there's a sign inside that says the cakes are nut free.
Here's the corrected version: First time trying a Japanese cheesecake, & I loved it! The place is very well located, the staff is friendly, & the service is surprisingly fast. The flavor is light, but you can still taste the cheese & sweetness in just the right amount. I will definitely go back & try the chocolate cheesecake.
Their cheesecake is delicious, fluffy, light & not overly sweet. Biscotti is great too!
