Il tombait sur Montréal une vilaine pluie verglaçante depuis le matin. Elle s'accompagnait d'un vent si puissant qu'elle semblait par moment glisser à l'horizontale. Qu'il faisait bon être à l'intérieur de l'église ! J'accueillais à la porte les fidèles qui entraient & sortaient avec des plaisanteries du genre : « Vous êtes sain & sauf ! » ou « Bon dimanche & bon courage ! »
Pourquoi abordons-nous l'autre si souvent par la pluie & le beau temps ? C'est présumément parce que la météo est universellement expérimentée de la même manière. Quand il fait chaud, tout le monde a chaud. Quand il fait froid, tout le monde a froid. Quand il pleut & grêle, tout le monde pleure & râle. Bon ! Pas tout à fait, mais c'était pour l'assonance.
Salutairement, on annonçait des températures au-dessus du seuil de congélation aux premières heures de l'après-midi & j'ai fixé un rendez-vous à mon grand frère pour un bref repas convivial. Nous avons convenu de nous rencontrer au Toki sur Pierce.
Il m'a fallu une vingtaine de minutes de tournoyage pour mettre les pneus sur une place de stationnement sur Sainte-Catherine. En arrivant en courant jusque devant la fenêtre du restaurant, j'ai été confronté aux yeux foudroyants de mon aîné que j'avais fait s'impatienter, supposément.
Quand même, il en avait profité pour examiner la carte & avait conclu que les deux combos (1 : tteorbokki, frites & accompagnements à 17,99 $ & 2 : kimchi frit & gangjung à 19,99 $) offraient la meilleure valeur quantité-prix. D'ailleurs, cela correspondait à mon désir d'essayer un peu de tout.
« Je crois qu'il faut commander au comptoir », m'indique-t-il. Je me retourne alors, menu à la main, pour attirer le regard le caissier à quelques pieds de nous. Il devait m'avoir vu &, pourtant, avec une expression un tantinet renfrognée, il refusait de lever les yeux. Même en m'approchant & en lui adressant d'abord un sourire, puis la parole, son attitude demeurait aussi froide qu'une douche par journée sans électricité. On dit que le sourire est contagieux, mais il semblait immunisé au mien.
Quoi qu'il en soit, il est arrivé en un rien de temps avec notre commande. Quelles portions généreuses ! Nous avions à peine pelleté la moitié de nos plats que nous sentions déjà la faim se dissiper.
La plus grande réussite : le kimchi frit (une sorte de poutine au kimchi) dont nous avons pris la variante « boeuf, porc, fromage » était une véritable explosion de saveurs.
L'agréable poulet frit désossé était, quant à lui, à la fois tendre & croustillant, rehaussé par les sauces sucrées & épicées (bien que jamais très piquantes).
Les amateurs de tteokbokki seront également servis, car, enrobées de sauce, ceux-ci fondent sous la dent comme un glaçon dans un moteur à réaction.
Les autres gourmandises du combo 1 (raviolis, frites, rouleau d'algues & compagnie) étaient fraiches & croustillantes à défaut d'être remarquables.
Pour faire descendre le tout, nous avons siroté un délectable dalgona au goût de caramel & un « vrai lait de mangue » (5,99 $ chacun). Pour prolonger le plaisir, nous nous sommes procuré du frigo des boissons traditionnelles du frigo pour un dépaysement assuré !
Tandis que nous étions seuls dans l'étroite salle à manger garnies de nombreux lapins en peluche, nos deux têtes se balançaient allégrement au rythme de la pop coréenne. Moi qui n'en écoute plus depuis belle lurette avais pourtant l'impression d'avoir déjà ouï toutes les chansons … serait-ce qu'elles ont envahi l'espace public ?
Les restaurants coréens ont connu un grand essor en étant bénéficiaires de ce que la musique & les séries télévisées de la péninsule conquéraient le coeur des jeunes. Mais, si cette tendance culturelle venait à s'essouffler, les restaurants leur survivraient-ils ? Je crois que oui, puisque, comme le démontre la cuisine du Toki, celle-ci a énormément pour plaire. De plus, j'attends avec impatience que le dialogue des cultures s'approfondisse, alliant ce qui se fait de mieux ici avec le meilleur de là-bas, pour des créations encore plus alléchantes !

Tiny Korean restaurant with delicious food. My husband & I got the Combo 1 & Combo 2 & shared. We loved the variety & everything was tasty.
The Korean fried chicken was crispy on the outside & tender & juicy on the inside. I love that it came in 2 different flavours. The kimchi fries were phenomenal. Fries, kimchi, beef bulgogi, cheese & sauce. So rich & over the top, lol. 😅 The coleslaw was so refreshing. I wished there was more of it. The tteokbokki was soft & chewy & the sauce was amazing. Loved the gimmari, fish cake slices, dumplings, onion rings & shrimp chips. The rice cake skewers were good. They are fried so a different texture than the tteokbokki.
Definitely recommend!! 💖

Toki je vous ajoute dans mes restaurants favoris c'est tellement bon la meilleure nourriture coréen que j'ai manger de ma vie & je compte bien y retourné très hâte d'y aller durant l'hiver c'est un cute spot cozy très petit par contre, mais on est là pour apprécier la nourriture & ça été mon cas. Excellent je vous conseille le combo 2 + boisson fruité fraise & lychee 💕🍡 soososooo good

The food was amazing & the portion for the combo is very generous. Me & my friend were able to share the combo after having a rice cake & sausage skewer each as it was plenty to make us full. Definitely recommend! (Also there's cute accessories to take pictures with your friends)

Got Uber eats from here. EXCELLENT TTEOKBOKI. Got the sotteok sotteok combo with fries & classic tteokbokki. The rice cakes were super chewy & soft, the sauce was the perfect amount of sweet & spicy (more on the sweeter side). The sotteok sotteok was very good too. It was a massive player of food for only 20$. Haven't been to Korea, but have tried a good amount of tteokboki in my life. This is the best one in Montreal so far. 100% recommend!!

the food is good, you get a lot for your money (especially with the combos) so I think it's worth it! but the place is super small, so it gets packed very very quickly. as of recently drinks no longer seem to be included with the combos!

I was very disappointed in the Combo 1 meal as I received a slice of egg in tteokbokki. Also, I didn't receive corn salad in combo 2. There are better Korean restaurants downtown that are more bang for the buck, so I'm not planning to buy from here again in the future.

Read reviews before coming here. Lots of claims that the food portions are small. Very untrue, I got the Combo 2 & had to share it with my partner in order to finish it. Great place!

Very good food & cute decor! We went when it wasn't busy so the size of the place did not bother us, but it is a small restaurant. I took the Combo 1 & the variety of sides did not disapoint. Very good strawberry milk too!

the food was awesome, i highly recommend the combo 2 as it is fulfilling & delicious. the space is a little bit cramped but my partner & i managed, overall i highly recommend this place if you're craving some Korean street food, since it is very affordable & delicious!

J'ai pris le combo avec les frites kimchi & c'était excellent! Le poulet (poulet frit de deux saveurs différentes) qui venait avec était très bon aussi. Les portions étaient grosses.

Had a nice lunch on a calm day. I had a tteokbokki craving & this place hits the right spots. It wasn't too too spicy & very delicious. Everything was very tasty & fresh! I got combo 1, a classic tteokbokki & vege dumplings, shared between 3 people. It was pretty filling & definitely worth every penny. Even if the space is very small, I can't wait to go back. I recommend it to groups with around 2 & to go on calm days to find seating :)

The place was great! I've seen lots of video online about it & wanted to go try it. We ordered both the combos & nothing was left. The rosé tteokbokki is a must try!! It was light & the rice cakes were cooked perfectly with the rosé sauce super addictive. The fried chicken was so juicy & was amazingly flavourful. The kimchi fries did not disappoint me & it goes so well together. All the dishes were good & I don't have a single complaint. I wish the restaurant was bigger but other than that I recommend it & you should try it the next time you see it.

(Got the Combo 1 & 2 here) Everything tastes good & the place is super cute with all the bunnies. The strawberry drink is also worth a try

A small & pinky new-jeans themed place that I almost walked past, cuz its name banner wasn't that easy to spot from outside. The tables are tiny, & they don't allow food/drink from outside. Food was honestly mediocre & a bit disappointing, the sides in the combo & seaweed rolls are the smallest portion I've ever seen, fried chicken's portion aren't big either. As for the flavor of the chicken, it tastes like General Tao but just more pricy. The only item that I likes is the kimchi fries, but charging $5 extra if we only want beef in it (no pork), is halal-unfriendly & ridiculous, considering the little amount of beef in there. I would not come here again.
