ChineseComfort FoodAsianVegetarianSzechuanCatering
Named after the Yangtze River, the longest waterway in Asia, represents an important gateway into China’s rich culture and history. Being one of the first neighbourhood Chinese restaurants in Montreal, it is renowned for its family dining experience, and has enjoyed a large and loyal clientele since its inception. This proud "institution", as its regulars likes to call it, is famous for its Egg Rolls and have been called the "best in town". In addition to those golden delicacies, the Wonton Soup, Yangtze Spare Ribs, Pineapple Chicken and Shrimps with Lobster Sauce are also favourites among Montrealers as well as former residents of the city who flock back when visiting. RESTAURANT TCHANG KIANG, was founded more than 35 years ago. This establishment was appreciated by many loyal customers and is recognized as one of the outstanding Chinese restaurants within the NDG area. Along with its many other Szechuan and Peking speciality dishes, this restaurant will surely satisfy any cravings.

Review Summary

Reviews for Tchang Kiang By Yangtze describe a place with very good food and generally excellent service, though portions are often called smaller than in the past. Dishes frequently praised include pineapple chicken, duck, chicken chow mein, garlic spareribs, egg rolls, hot and sour soup, chicken fried rice and the crispy pork with black mushrooms, with sauce and texture highlighted; some items are noted as overbattered, underfilled, or sometimes bland and overcooked. A few comments mention a decline from earlier visits, while many describe it as a reliable neighbourhood favourite for decades, clean surroundings and courteous staff. The restaurant is seen as a solid choice for celebrations and everyday meals alike, with attentive service and steady quality, even as portion size and consistency remain common themes in reviews.

I am sad to see so many negative reviews. This has been our go-to place for Christmas Eve dinner for many years & occasionally we order from them outside that for birthdays or other special events. The food has always been very good. Eggrolls, soup, we always switch up the pineapple chicken for chicken soo guy (delish!) & a new favourite, the crispy pork & black mushrooms. Very tasty & great texture if you like mushrooms! I have never eaten in there but will be doing so with friends soon.

Used to be decent, has gone way downhill. Eggrolls much smaller & not as tasty as before, chicken dish had barely any chicken, only batter, other dishes were tasteless & overcooked.

My mother is 90 wanted to go down memory lane so we got some take out today. I was hesitant from some of the reviews that I had read ,but decided to give them a chance
Chicken chow mein was nice, garlic spareribs nice, pineapple chicken was a nice surprise as most restaurants put a tiny piece of chicken & then a ton of batter like a golf ball. This was prepared really nice in the sauce & pineapple. Egg rolls nice. General Tao chicken was also tasty but not in the black bean sause. Must be some interpretation of the dish but still tasted really good chicken fried rice was good, not much chicken though. Only down side & it seems to be a common theme with many restaurants, portions a lot smaller than they used to be. If you take the dinner for 2 etc, remember they charge extra for the soup. Hot & sour soup was tasty.
I would go back & I would recommend this restaurant. I used to go there all the time in the 80s & they keep the place clean. Staff is courteous. Last thought : for everyone that had some issue with the staff other order, it's really not nice to make stories about horrible service or getting sick from food. This restaurant has been around for decades & taking swipes at the staff & chef is immature.

Anyone with money or inheriting a restaurant can have one, but having business sense, common sense & respect for your customers who are your bread+butter requires a different kind of savvy! Petty cash-grabs at every turn has been the downfall of a number of restaurants, because at already too-high prices, customers do not wish to be taken further advantage of! First, refusing to supply the always in-the-past pack of a few dry noodles for the soup, insisting on the purchase of a whole order instead, then when asked to supply a few cellopacs of hot mustard for the now smaller, ever more expensive eggrolls, being told that mustard will now cost me $1.50 & then charging $2 extra for delivery (on a $54+ order) WHICH WAS ALWAYS FREE - is just way too much gouging, disdain & disrespect!!! Their predecessors would cringe in shame! Their food may be good (not all of it, by any means), but enough is enough! I will opt for a bit less good (many other less-expensive choices of places) & better appreciation elsewhere, as I understand a number of other customers of theirs already have done.

I've been going for years (50+) This is where we'd go for my birthday. Egg rolls are still excellent. All the food was perfect. Although they dropped the almonds from the chicken & vegetables.

We arrived at 6h00pm at the restaurant. We ordered at 6h30pm. It took 1 hours & a half to get our plate. We got out at almost 9h00pm. Unbelievable.

For the price, the food was very dissappointing. Lets talk about the general tao for example. It cost 15$ for the plate. My friend had 6 chuncks + a kids size steam rice. I had the singapour noodle. It was so spicy that ive tooked 3 bites & it was enough. Portion wise, my 2 years old kid woulf have ate it all. It was small. The shrimp was a little underdone. & it was written on the menu that it was suppose to have bbq porc in it. Ive found 3 littles pieces of it.....

The wonton soup (3 ball of wonton) was 5$ if im not mistaken. Too expensive.

The waitress told me that they were famous for their eggrolls. Ive decided to order one. When it came (almost 20 minutes after), i took a bite. It was like eating a teaspoon full of salt. Disgusting. & each cost around 3$.

My perception of this restaurant is that they want to pretend to be a classy chinese restaurant with high prices for their plate. I rather go to another place & pay 8$ for a plate & be full rather that paying 15$ to eat there & go to McDonalds after for a cheese burger because i was still ungry.

& they have their "table du chef" instead of the "table d'hôte". Each plate cost around 15$ & there is no rice or noodle that comes with the plates.

& btw, for dessert, they are selling a bowl of ice cream for 5$ !!

So, there is planty of other restaurant that the plates cost less & that its way better.

I am not recommending this place.
