Good place to take a pint.
A bit on the pricey side, but the drinks compensate it

My wife & I found ourselves on Crescent Street on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in early June. We were both a little peckish, & both agreed that a pint sounded like a good idea.

As we walked by, the terrace at Sir Winston Churchill drew us in from the street.

To be honest, Crescent isn't somewhere we spend much time. I've always associated it with tourists, bachelor parties, & drunken youth shenanigans. Nothing wrong with that… it's just not usually my scene.

We were quickly seated, our order was promptly taken, & before long we were enjoying two pints of Stella & grilled chicken salads on the terrace. The salads were fresh, the beer was cold, & everything was surprisingly good.

I say'surprisingly' because my expectations were probably unfairly shaped by my perception of Crescent Street rather than the pub itself.

As we ate, we settled into one of my favourite activities: people watching.

That's when I noticed the sign marking the alley beside us: Nick-Auf Der Maur Lane.

My first thought was whether there was any connection to Melissa Auf der Maur of Hole & Smashing Pumpkins fame. As it turns out, the lane honours her father Nick Auf der Maur, a journalist, politician, & influential figure in Montréal's cultural & nightlife scene.

The more I read, the more interesting it became.

Nick was known for bridging Montréal's English & French communities & was deeply connected to the city's arts, politics, & nightlife. Suddenly the location of the sign beside Sir Winston Churchill didn't feel accidental. This pub was here during that era. These streets were part of the Montréal where people like Nick gathered, debated ideas, built relationships, & helped shape the city we know today.

What started as an unplanned stop for a pint & a salad unexpectedly turned into a small history lesson & a deeper connection to Montréal.

Those are often the best discoveries.

Not the ones you plan for.

The ones you stumble into while sitting on a terrace, drinking a beer, & paying attention.

Great vibe out on the deck. Enjoying beers over Crescent Ave & the F1 buzz. Very nice staff. Place needs a serious tech update though. Honestly we would have dropped 3 times the cash here if we could just scan a QR code on the table, order & pay our bill on the phone. The waitress is running off her feet trying to take orders, giving patrons their bills & passing the machine around. Needless to say we were challenged trying to order drinks & didn't bother with the food order.

A group of 12 of my friends & I were having a decent night until my one friends were discriminated against & forced to leave the bar. The bouncer blamed it on a'dress code' violation, but my friend was wearing a tank top… it was blatant homophobia. Would not recommend this bar to anyone who is at all outwardly Queer. We were buying drinks & dancing on a Thursday night (the only people who were actively contributing to the success of the night & bar), & were completely disrespected.
Will 1000% not be visiting this establishment again, & shame on the bouncers & managers.

Homophobic.
We were dancing there for hours from around 10pm, when a bouncer out of nowhere kicked my friend out around 1am because his shoulders were showing. Dancing all night & ordered drinks all night & nobody else said anything. The bouncer claimed they had a dress code that started at 10pm *eyeroll
We asked the bartender who had been serving my friend ALL NIGHT, about the dress code & he said'we have a dress code?'
Obviously the bouncer & security staff were extremely homophobic & singled my friend out. Absolutely disgusting behavior. Will never go back

The drinks & service were fine, but the server openly questioned a 15% tip, which made the experience uncomfortable. Unfortunately, it left a bad impression & I wouldn't return.

The best patio to soak up sunshine & energy from the street. Food is super average, but we keep coming back, for the patio. & drinks are fairly inexpensive.
